Scarlet and Nikon lens...

How dumb is it to ask for a Nikon mount on Scarlet?

What would you shoot wide with? There are NO Nikon lenses designed for a 2/3" sensor.

What are you thinking?

Jim

Great choice, Jim!

Just added Scarlet or two to my (growing) shopping list. If it had S35mm sensor, it would not complement Red One or Epic. Good fixed lens is better than a million crappy once. The camera will be priceless for certain type of POV shots. I do need one camera with deep DOF for macro shots.
If it was "another Red One" I wouldn't like to have it in addition to Red One, why would I?

"Maybe you should check the manual."

I'm happy to use a 35mm Lens Adapter from say...Letus or Redrock,

I JUST WANT SOUND!!!!! GIVE ME AUDIO PLEASE!!!!!

I trust Red will be more than capable of attaching an excellent quality fixed lens to the Scarlet because if they don’t they are the ones that suffer the consequences. I have no problem with fixed lenses. You have a wide angle, normal, telephoto or whatever in a nice little package. Some people love to complicate things so much in this business is amazing. Mr. Jannard just tell your manufacturing people to start assembling the Scarlets, a lot of us are ready to send you money and thank you for your effort.

Scarlet will have two channels of audio... that is a given.

Jim

I asked for a Nikon mount because I rather be a idiot with options then a smart guy with no options. (Seeing that the stock lens could be a really wide angle lens) Not that it's going to be my main camera, but it still offers some mind tickling possibilities.

But in an ideal world, there would off course be a "RED" mount with "RED LENSES" made for the scarlet. But I thought that option was out..

And I don't complain. I just try to subject my thoughts into the development process. Sorry if this comes on as anything other then just that.

thanks Jim! Scarlet is so much more than I was hoping for, the absolute perfect cam for me. I can't wait to get one of these into a waterhousing and take it into the surf.

... and the performance of a system is what makes it professional.

Jim

Very true...and in the hands of experienced and open minded professionals, Scarlet will definitely be a potent pro-level camera.

Owning a pen doesn't make someone Shakespeare. Owning a paint brush doesn't make someone Picasso. Shooters who possess the four T's (Talent, Training, Tenacity, Technology), and a progressive mindset, will be generating beautiful, aesthetic, cutting-edge images with Scarlet - while doubters somehow try to convince them that it can't be done.

While the APS-C sensor hits the lens' sweet spot, the Scarlet would hit the really really sweet spot. That and make a 50mm lens a 200mm.

Here's my main problem:

A 3k 2/3'' sensor should be slower than a 4k super35 sensor...on the order of a stop or more.

A t2.8 lens is slower than a t1.3 16mm lens. On the order of two stops.

Now we're 3 stops slower than a red with ultra primes. That's 8 times the light!

Low budget filmmaking is often limited by lighting budgets, etc. and that can add to the price more than the camera (or rental) itself does.

Furthermore, the EX1 (available now with a proven workflow) has roughly the same final resolution (true 1080p), dynamic range, etc. And, with its f1.9 lens, presumably the same depth of focus characteristics.

With a PL mount, you could buy primes as you need them...or a zoom...or whatever. And this means a nicer DOF (most 35mm is photographed around t2.8, which is equivalent to about t1.3 on 2/3''), the possibility of using digiprimes, etc. if you have to, more flexibility re: focal length...and the (potential) availability of 8 times the light....

I'd pay as much (if not more) for the camera with a PL mount than with the current lens attached permanently. That ANYONE wants a 35mm adapter with it (lose a few stops more, lose a lot of the 3k resolution) should be a tip-off that something is amiss. The t2.8 built in lens just isn't what we want.

Otherwise, it sounds great!

Whomever has problems with the Scarlet as it stands now should go and buy a more expensive and suitable camera. We have to wait and see the final specs. As it stands now it sounds fantastic and for $3000.00 you can’t ask for much more. Some capable professionals and even beginners are indeed going to create amazing work with it. It all depends on you and your capabilities as a filmmaker as well as how much real dedication you have to your art.

Yeah, everyone seems to be ignoring the $3k part. That price means pretty much anyone can own at least two of them. I'll bet two of these puppies will fit in a standard Halliburton or Pelican style case that can be carried on a plane with you. Doc shooters just got a secret weapon.

uhh - recording to xdcam 35 mb from a 1/2 inch sensor, colour space 4.2.0
It does have hdsdi of course - but is that off the block or after compression ? If I know Sony it'll be after ...
hmm

Like the interchangable lens thingy but crippled once again - do I want to buy a Sony 1/2 inch lens set ? nope. Can I rent them ? Nope. A few issues there.

Horses for courses, I guess.

No comparison really ...

edit: ohh, ohh I forgot the other one - it looks like a

wait for it

Canon. bleh

oh sorry - you're talking about the EX 1 - thought you were on about the Ex3. Never mind the same pretty well applies. Just doesn't look like a Canon -
can't believe the similarity with that Ex3 ...

Hmmm. How do I even approach this?

3k for $3k is amazing. End of story. Absolutely. No one is saying it doesn't beat the hell out of most other cameras in this range. It's amazing.

That being said - this camera is PERFECT for the independent production company. Small companies producing commercials, corporate videos, etc. The ones that aren't making enough money to purchase the full-blown RedONE or RedEPIC systems.

In other words...me :)

But, the truth is, pretty much any zoom lens you put on this thing will be 'okay' and nothing more. I've yet to use a fixed-lens/pro-sumer camera where I thought, 'man, the way this lens handles light, detail, and the circle of confusion is amazing!'

Usually, we figure out ways to fight AGAINST the lens: popping on ND, boosting the light, doing what it takes to reduce the extreme depth of field so that we can use the focal plane to help tell the story.

This isn't about rack focusing, this is about focusing on what's important, and not what isn't.

Sure, for a wedding, for football game, for any 'event' this camera will be fantabulous. And for narrative work, it'll be great as well. But, just like with the DVX or the HVX, we'll be figuring out ways to jury-rig this system to get the results we want.

For the price? Yeah, it's a steal. But *most* of us would love the ability to change lenses - no matter the mount. Give us the ability, and we'll purchase lenses that will do the deed.

So people aren't raging against the system or being ungrateful. But we are stating that there's something this camera doesn't offer that we wish it did: interchanging lenses. It'd just make an amazing camera pretty much unbeatable in all aspects.

I get the point of a small light and good built in lens being superior for a 2/3" sensor. You convinced me. And I'll be transfering the cash as soon as you open up the store (guess there won't be any reservations for such a low amount).

Jim, I thanked you 2 years ago at IBC for what you are doing for the filmmakers worldwide, cracking up the frustrating marketing system of the big players, and crafting cams with todays technology – and I thank you again!

Only one thing: please make it 4 channel audio! I need that for a stereo-mic, a lavalier and occationally a boom. I it won't be in scarlet, I'd have to buy an expensive sounddevices 744T or so. That is not pocket size.

Lens: Please make it changable or add at least a fixed 14x Zoom with T 1.6, so a proper DOF can be achived. But I guess the best option would be a PL Mount and a optional Kit Lens with Autofeatures (Focus). Or maybe different mounts - P/L, Nikon, Canon ? Crop Factor would not be the Problem.
