  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet and Epic BUILD 4 BETA

That's a shame. Recognizing Pal countries would be appreciated.

and this why i sold my scarlet-x and have now the funds for the f55 nearly complete...
btw. i love my epic.

best, norbert

Scarlet X is the type of camera for us folks who can´t afford an Epic or a Sony F-55. So you made a good choice by selling it, as I did by buying it :)

I haven't upgraded to this build yet, but I love the idea of speed ramp... however, will there be a way other than "do it in post" to actually keep each frame within the ramp at ideal exposure? Eg. can we ramp FLUT, ISO, shutter speed or aperture proportionally to the frame rate ramp to actually keep the exposure the same from beginning to end of take? That would be the cherry on the icing on the cake!

when you use the shutterspeed that belongs to the higher framerate, the exposer won't change.

Trent, I noticed some issues, which are repeatable on my SCARLET:

After 1:1 magnify, changing the ISO doesn't change the picture or the histogram anymore.

When coming back from playback, after shooting and playing back a trigger record sequence, I get 3 broad stripes with color noise which only go away by unplugging, and plugging the touch lcd (5") back in.

When viewing any one of the test signals, the UI freezes up right when the LCD shows the selected one. Only the real tactile buttons still work (the "back" button on the SH doesn't do anything in this state) - have to power down

Also the frequency for the 5" touch switches down to 30 frequently ... still have to figure out though when exactly it does that.

Feature Request:
Not sure if this is enabled, and I can't find it, but it would be great, if the RECORDING MODE would be saved in a preset.

Trent, sorry to repost, but do I contact support with this?

Thanks so much for your weekend support! Happy Holidays to you!

Robert. Correct. But then the main issue is that i will have a very fast shutter speed at 24fps... and I would like a 180 degree shutter the whole way, whilst maintaining exposure. I don't want a choppy stacato effect, moving to a smoother 180 degree motion within the same shot. I am certain there is a way to do this via iris control, or flut control linked with ramping.

Otherwise I will have to adjust and keyframe levels in post. Or simply shoot it all in camera at high speed mode, then ramp in post. If ramping doesn't have an in camera (or in RCX-pro) way to also ramp flut, this excellent feature will be difficult to implement for me.

Hope that explains what I mean.

Cheers from Tokyo,

Ivan

:-)

scarlet is a great camera. but a few years ago when the hdslr video thing started i changed from nikon which was a useless system for 25p to canon.
and now i had to do some equal. give up the thoughts that scarlet will be 100% usable for pal users...
when i switched over to canon from nikon, i did not understand why nikon only went 24p. as today i don´t understand that red enables ful 25p capabilities for the scarlet. and NO WORD from red about this... i give up.
sad i have to change again. from scarlet to f55.

I've been playing with the time lapse mode on my Scarlet, it's a great addition, thank you. Am I doing something wrong or is 5k still limited to 12fps?

It'd be pretty damn good to allow us entry-levellers to shoot 5k time lapse. Or am I wrong in assuming that 25p at 5k isn't possible even when shooting below 1 frame a second? Apologies if I'm being dumb.

Thanks

* Added Calibration warnings for exposure and temperature

If calibrations are out-of-sync with expected exposure and temperature maps, you'll get a warning to adjust calibration.

Wondering if some kind of automatic BS library setting would be possible to implement?
That would choose wich BS to use depending on temp/shutter speed. BS library setting could take more than 12 min of course but could be a time/RAW file saver on set... Switching from one setting to the other would be automatically performed between shots when the calibration warning is triggered.

Very nice build so far, haven't noticed any problematic bugs for now.

Pre-rec will be a great feature in some situations. Just curious : does its regular use have any noticeable influence on the SSD's lifespan ? I have no idea on how many write cycles Red's SSDs are rated ?

Sleep modes are a great addition too, if they really are efficient. I would like to be able to assign them to the soft-keys on the touchscreen, but apparently that doesn't work, I can assign them but the camera wakes up immediately. I'm also surprised that the fans stay on that much during sleep mode. Shouldn't you be able to slow them down a bit more ?

One major improvement is the black shading time, that's actually one of the improvements I'm the more excited about.

As others mentioned previously, I would also like to hear a more precise tutorial on the BlackShading features, especially how the user presets work (what does Uses HS stand for btw ?)

One point that I would like to see improved, if possible, is how fast the camera toggles to and from 1:1 Magnification on the screen. It's usable, but the few seconds it takes can be a pain sometimes, when you're in a hurry and still want to make sure your focus is spot on.

I was thinking about this too. Would be nice if the camera was able to choose the right BS calibration automatically. How many calibrations would we need to do to cover all situations ?

Yes, please open a support ticket and send in a log. I wouldn't expect any solutions to the problems, but atleast your log file will help us fix the problems for the next release.

I'm not sure I understand your problem shooting time lapse in 5K.

Thanks for reporting this issue, it appears to be a bug where the release event of the touchscreen is waking the camera up immediately.

A lot of people have complained about the fans in Sleep. We will continue to improve these new features based on user feedback.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TRENT!

Thanks for all your great work!
