  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet and Epic BUILD 4 BETA

* Feature Request

I'd love the ability to set a 1:1 spot focus to stay continuously enabled across a second monitor (RED Touch or HDMI/SDI monitor out). Then we could have a small monitor with the 1:1 focus enabled on that monitor alone, while we navigate menus and capture with full preview on our main.

Agreed, great idea!

Only vertical flip of the video is available at the moment. We're awaiting a few more pieces to fall into place before we can enable horizontal mirror of the video in camera.
The UI can be bother flipped and mirrored using the the flip/mirror checkbox.

Remember all.. when you start flipping the actual video and not just the monitor.. all the software tools need to be rewritten to be able to understand what you just did, for demosaic, pixel processing etc.. that's not as easy as it sounds to resolve :)

It's shiity, but it's a test! Couldn't wait to set something up!

It's real, it works. Some east coast guy go shoot a sunrise :)

ha ha that was quick :)

Jarred: Any approx. specs on the power saving modes? How much power do we save in the two different saving modes?

So the whole recorded video stream flips? Not just the signal to the monitor?

That's what is required for the video mirror, yes. The video flip, which is enabled now, is done solely in the monitor data.

What a great way to celebrate the new day after the world's end ;-)

Thank you, RED team!

And thank you Rob for the 'missing manual'. Let me add some observations on frame averaging:

This is not a noise reduction feature for motion frequencies in most cases. Moving objects will still display double-contouring and similar artifacts if you shoot with 180 degree shutter or smearing if you shoot open gate. To do something like image analysis to separate moving objects from noise (think Neatvideo), you'll need massive processing power we don't have in cameras yet. Obviously RED is just adding the chosen number of frames and either normalizing (frame averaging) or summing. These features enable longer exposure times and should massively reduce noise when doing time lapse. Remember: if you are doing long exposures, your sensor is looking at far fewer photons and is going to show a lot of noise without such measures.
I'm going to love it, for sure!

If you need similar noise reduction for regular motion, do it in post.

Regarding higher frame rates for the Scarlet, I also hoped for 25 fps full size or HDR @ 3K, like many Europeans, Asians, Africans…

But RED never ever promised anything like this, so it was wishful thinking on our side. We'll need to stick to speeding it up if we just have a Scarlet – like it was done for film on TV in the non-NTSC world for over 60 years. But please stop nitpicking about this, this is such a great update from RED. And if anybody out there tries to make up a conspiracy theory about protecting the market for Epic: please think twice. If RED could do it, they could make much more money by selling us the upgrade.

Thanks RED team for a fantastic update and your company ethos.

Couple of questions on the speed ramping...

Will change of resolutions be of issue? Being can I begin in 24p 4K, and shift to 48p 3k without issue?

We have always been advised to do another black shade if shooting significantly differing frame rates. Is there a best practice with ramping? Black shade for the higher FPS?

Thanks of the feature breakdown Rob, very helpful.

Wishing everyone a very merry xmas.

Best

Lliam

Not quick enough; I was going for the sun dropping behind the cloud. As it is, I rushed it and screwed up the pola...

Question: what's the interplay between long exposures (or I suppose integrated exposures is really what you've implemented) and black shading on this build? If you're shooting at 1FPS instead of your regular, should you do a black shade specific to that exposure? Any new gotchas there?

While recoding in any mode, you cannot change resolutions. You'll need to ramp within your selected format.

As for black shading, if you are ramping between any of the standard rates and a higher fps, a default black shade should work well. Black shading will really only come into play with the longer exposures only available at frame-rates slower than 24 fps. And you can always do a test at the extremes of the ramp to make sure everything looks good.

How about a Canberra sunset?

This timelapse thing is a joy to use. So simple, and to get back home and have a single RAW file to edit, oh yeah!

Black shading will remain unchanged. The frame-processing is done on the already 'calibrated' images before encode.

Build 4 is finally here.. A whole whack of new goodies in this one.

* Updated UI

Been home for a few minutes and boom that's a heck of a thing. Don't know what black magic transpired behind the Red curtain, but the very first thing I noticed with the new firmware is how snappy the menu and settings changes are. Nicely done. So fresh and so clean.

Flaming Nora.

I'm going to have to scratch my head on this 'long exposure' lark. 100% crop:

Ok, thanks very much Matt.

Questions ...

Epic-X start up time : anybody else experiencing very long start up times, much longer than 3.x build ?
Pre-Record : setting is lost once you record something (have to re-select); different behaviour than Interval TimelapseTimer which stays active and de-activated via menu. ANY CHANCE OF HAVING 5_SEC PRE-RECORD OPTION TOO PLEASE ?
LCD vertical bands : these appear from time to time, especially once a shot is previewed and when returinng to live view bands appear (can be got rid of by going into Settings > Monitor Control > Monitor (Brain LCD) toggle frequency from 30Hz to 59.94 and back)
Power Save > Sleep : I guess the label should say 'LCD Sleep' ?

Thanks, David
