  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet and Epic BUILD 4 BETA

Hmmm ... when i do the 1:1 zoom, it zooms to the center and I see a little square in the top left with a small red square - but I can't figure out how to move that little square around so i can do a zoom off center? I have both a touch screen, a side handle and am on PL lenses. Anyone that can give more or less exact instructions for the slightly daft, on how to move around that little box, would be much appreciated ;)

Sure. Let me tell you what I've done:

- I've assigned "AF Cycle" and "Magnify" to keys on the DSMC Side Handle.
- That will bring up the red focus box.
- By pressing anywhere on the touch screen you can move the red focus box.
- Pop into Magnify and there you go.

Additionally if you are set on AF Confirm you will notice that based on contrast detection the red focus box will turn yellow and then green when you have locked what the camera believes is accurate focus. It's usually pretty good, but just like all contrast detect AF systems you can full it with different materials like dark plastics or leather.

Also, with the new Enhanced AF feature (found in the Focus menu) you can add an additional focus tool that performs sort of like a game of "hotter or colder" where you can choose from one type of overlay graphic (like a circular pie meter) that increases or decreases it's "fullness" based on how close or far you are from being in focus. As mentioned earlier in this thread, by enabling that feature you will lose one of your monitoring ports (HDSDI or HDMI) to provide processing power for Enhanced AF.

Fun stuff actually! And seriously useful.

Hi Phil, enjoy all of your work on the reference guides, thank you for that, but this post with the "monkey" and the "noose" seems racist.....just wanted to ask you if this was the intended message

I assure you I'm not racist. Past and current friends of several of different races and ethnicities. Even worked at a studio for 11+ years that had employees from all over the world. I love different cultures and traveling.

However, I do have some sort of weird talent for those stuffed animal claw machines. I probably have 50-60 stuff animals from them still laying around. It's rare to not win something. Gotta do something with them.

Here's a tiger I hung near my tent:

And before anybody freaks out. I love animals. So much. They are more amazing than we can imagine.

:violent5:Phil where was the 1-1 critical focus on this pix.. the chimp or the color chart???
You are a man of your word. Careful what you wish for in the future...

I locked it on his eye! Which is something that was impossible before this build. I jogged out into the garden during the holiday break and tested like mad. I must say for macro work especially this is just a crazy useful feature.

Focused on the blade of grass there and it's tack sharp.

My apologies for even insinuating.........Now lets get back to this wonderful build.

Thank you Red Team!!!!

Question Phil....with 1:1 move around.....can it be done w/out using touchscreen? any other ways to use it or move around in it? From underwater housing...somehow access via redmote?

I haven't found a way, but I hear a rumor that the Redmote might be able to do this. I don't have one here to test that out. It would be snazzy if there was a way to have it hop around half it's measured distance per click of the directional pad on the DSMC Side Handle. Some sort of hot key we could assign to the Side Handle that goes from Menu control to Focus Box control. Likely a future firmware if it's not there today.

If you are using a setup without one of the LCD Touch models or without the DSMC Side Handle or the Redmote it's probably not going to be usable.

You can move the focus rectangle using the directional pad on the side handle or redmote. Navigate down to the rectangle by pressing down on the directional pad if the top menu is selected.

Oh boy. I should have noticed that one. I can confirm that works.

Unexpected behavior perhaps. When magnified and moving the focus rectangle when it goes off the screen it doesn't follow it. You get a little label saying "AF" on the tag. That may or may not be desirable.

Thanks guys, this is just what I was needing while my Touch LCD goes out for repairs and Iʻm using a backup LCD. I also noticed that once I select the rectangle, the REDMote wheel changes the size of the rectangle. Whatʻs going on there?

Cool ... that worked. Also, I hooked up my redmote and it did move the little square around with the joystick buttons.

It's changing the size of the AF window. You can do the same thing with the LCD by double tapping the window.

I agree that ideally you should be able to pan the magnify window while zoomed in. However, this is currently not possible without a long lag. However we allow you to move the AF window outside of the current view of the LCD for several reasons. For one, if you have both an HDMI or HDSDI monitor and LCD attached you will have different views on each. This is because all monitors are showing the pixels 1:1 and have different resolutions. This means the AF window may be off screen on the LCD but still visible on the HDMI or HDSDI.

Also, if you are in rack mode one of the points will almost always be off screen when in 1:1. With the A or B label showing where the other point is is nice for point of reference.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm pretty happy with it's functionality now honestly. Being able to use the DSMC Side Handle keys to fine tune it's location prior to zooming is good. Can't wait to use this feature in production. Moco is going to be much easier and precise.

Trent, would it be technically possible to magnify only the pixels in the focus rectangle? It would be useful to have the full view for composition while focus could be adjusted with user selectable magnification within the focus rectangle.

<Mostly, but honestly the most important and useful update in 4.0 for me is the 1:1 Movable Pixel Zoom. This is a feature I can say I'll use nearly everyday. The fact that I can now lock critical focus anywhere within the frame is massive. I've pined for it shooting feature VFX <elements, commercials, and even in certain narrative situations.

Phil, how do you actually use the 1:1 zoom for this practically? I guess you only mean for static shots? Or. As far as I understand it we cannot see it magnified while actually recording which I miss for some focus work.

Btw, I found that the 1:1 is now very useful for checking the quality of your lenses. I've been doing lots of CA tests of canon still lenses of late.

Thanks!
Andreas
