  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet and Dragon...

As long as that is not the only path... Telling Scarlet-X owners triple their investment or leave doesn't really fit with obsolescence obsolete, does it? I suppose red could get out of it by offering to buy Scarlets back from people who can't afford an upgrade path costing 2x the cost of a Scarlet, but it couldn't be very lucrative to lose money buying back EOL'd products while simultaneously losing a huge user base and market segment.

Isn't there still some room to keep a lower budget product made from lower binned components and defects that don't compromise 5k operation? Maybe not?

Thats how Scarlet as we know it came to be... but we don't know what that looks like yet... we dont know yields and we don't know what the swing in components are yet. It took us a good year to find that out with Epic, and I dont think the Scarlet owners are going to be super excited to wait a year after Dragon comes out to upgrade.. which is why its good to have some other options.

$10K for Epic upgrade is the best option for Scarlet owners including me..thats what im gonna do in next 5 months..

Jarred,

Thanks for the updates. Just wondering if you still think you'll know what an upgrade path may or may not be this month? I thought I remembered you saying somewhere you'd hopefully know what the Scarlet upgrade path looks like this December.

I like how you guys think :yesnod:

Thx for this update, the future seems more spelled out so we can plan accordingly

It kinda came as a shock to me yesterday when I realized how close Dragon actually is! It's really exciting, I can't help but to get antsy when theres Scarlet Dragon rumors I have to protect my investment so my freelance business can keep moving forward.

I'm gonna have to start saving mad dough again, all for a great cause. Glad to know the action I need to take at this point in time.

What are you gonna do with all the old Epic chips? Any chance you could drop those into my Scarlet as a halfway mark, turn it into a BT Epic-X until I can afford a Dragon set up?

Then again if Dragon comes at a good price tag it may not even be necessary.

If worst comes to worst then I can wait a few more months and go all in for an Epic Dragon.

Either way I dont see myself loosing

can't wait for Dragon screen grabs and footi

Any upgrade path at all, whether its turning in my brains, boards, etc is cool by me (at any price point)! I would love to trade up whether its to an Epic or a Dragon...and I don't mind waiting for it, however long it takes. Its not like we don't have camera to shoot on now Red Team, take your time, no rush! We are happy to have an upgrade path at all is the truth... Much better then how Sony runs their ship. I heard an angry F3 owner yesterday talking about how hes only renting from now on, never buying a camera again. We truly appreciate that you guys don't make all our parts stop working every other model and appreciate the time you take to be green and also help us save some cash...

Jim,
How about swapping out a few boards and upgrading the RED ONE to dragon.? I would be happy to pay for that....I love the form factor of the RED ONE, it would be the perfect camera with the new dragon guts in it.

Very true Brian. It's a win win any way you look at it.

I just purchased a Scarlet and look forward to the opportunity to upgrade it to Epic and or Dragon. I always did prefer the image quality of the Sony F3 (latitude/noise) and the F5/55 footage is absolutely stunning.. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the Dragon sensor.

Regardless I think Red is pioneering and the service is second to none :)

Thanks for not forgetting about us little guys..

As long as we have some option to upgrade our Scarlets, I will be happy. I'm sure there is no possible way to make everyone happy, but at least we will have an option. Either way, I'm saving up now.

How aoubt a "pimp my scarlet"-program Jim with custom made shiny parts and italian leather side handle!

When Scarlet came out it was like a miracle, like a dream come true, and a breakthrough as well. We are all proud to be Scarlet owners, so let's wait and trust Jim and Jarred because they've always had a customer a great satisfaction policy and amazing good intentions with all of us. I cannot remember a press release from them that makes us sad. Instead, They always exceed our expectations, and moreover, the rest of the industry's expectations...

I ordered my scarlet the night it was announced. Would really love to keep it and just buy a epic down the road, but if I have to upgrade to epic capture the dragon, then so be it. My hope is if we do, do a trade in can we keep our RED armor if the camera never needed to file a repair with RED armor?

Glad to hear—long live the Scarlet!

Of course it makes sense that we will upgrade EPICs to the Dragon sensor before Scarlets. However, we are considering how to upgrade Scarlets to the Dragon.

There are several boards that need to be changed so the upgrade for Scarlet may be a bit more expensive than the upgrade to EPIC..

We are always thinking about our customers... just so you know.

Jim

Personally, going from Scarlet to Epic seems to make the most sense. Especially since none of us have even seen Dragon yet, but are drooling over what it will do. It's technology that will improve on Epic and all of us Scarlet users don't even have Epic yet.

I just see a necessary hierarchy. Epic-X was at the top, but it's cheaper now - replacing Red One MX and getting closer to Scarlet. The new guy for the top position will be Epic Dragon. So it's basically Scarlet-X > Epic-X > Epic Dragon. Or 4k > 5k > 6k. Jumping from Scarlet to Dragon sounds more like a whole new camera has to be invented that would be dangerously similar in price to Epic-X, but somehow has lower capabilities in order for Epic to stay Epic. Can a Scarlet-D really be better than an Epic-X and still warrant being called Scarlet? It would make sense to me if everything worked kind of like hand me downs. Scarlet-X at the bottom (or technically Red One at the bottom), Epic-X in the middle, and then Epic Dragon at the top.

For some I guess staying at 4k and 24 fps but just getting more DR from Dragon is enough. But it's already been stated that we'll be paying more than $6k for the upgrade. So if it's just as much to upgrade to Epic-X would you really pick Dragon over Epic-X? Would you really pay an estimated $8-10k (or potentially more) just for more DR? I supposed some would, depending on your needs. But the way I see it, my Scarlet isn't even using all of my MX sensor. I'd like to use an Epic and maxmimize MX usage before moving to Dragon. With Epic only being another 10K on top of the Scarlet, I'd rather spend my money on Epic-X than a better, but still crippled (relatively speaking :)) sensor.

I would think most users would want more resolution and higher FPS before the DR of Dragon. For me even just using all of the 5k sensor for better lens coverage is high on my list.

My two cents. I just really want to trade up my Scarlet for an Epic :)

EDIT: Just read Jim's post saying Dragon should only be compared to 65mm. That makes the hierarchy even clearer to me. Is there even such thing as a lower end 65mm camera?
