  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 8x internal 120FPS test

wow just....wow.... and to think that is less than a quarter of the resolution....

DOPE! Killer shit Jarred & crew. loved that he rocked the board slide on your car hahah.

Love that she's working at these FPS man. so rad

Just watched this again and I love how this shot uses deep focus. There is action going on in many different planes and your eye can chose which one to focus on. These kind of shots are so rare these days with all of the focus on razor thin DoF, hopefully Scarlet will lead to a lot more Citizen Kane style cinematography.

I can hear sound in QT, KMplayer, VLC player, but I can't see video!

i was just going to suggest vlc... hmm. i hate that you're missing out right now! have you tried updating to the latest version of quicktime or do you have any programs like premiere, after effects, anything that you could try opening it in?

anybody else on windows?

my workstation just got unpacked, i've got to get some rest but i'll be setting it up tomorrow and see what i can come up with. hope you get it working before then though!

I'm not ashamed to admit watching that a dozen times :)

THANK YOU!!

oh wow. awesome stuff. thanks a ton jarred. you just get to have all the fun. no fair :)

talk about a quick and dirty test :D

btw: I guess you like your rides.... ;) the matte paint job tells me it's one of yours!?

Thanks I see...this amazing!
I even can't imagine what will be when thousands of filmmakers will get acces to FILM cameras!

i was just about to ask the same thing jarred... i'm guessing you directed the photography as well. care to talk about it?

and is that your truck?

Yup.. heh heh that poor truck just keeps taking a beating and keeps on ticking..

Anyways as for lighting... It was much more complicated than i originally planned... seems to always happen to me for some reason. I started with space lights scattered along at about 15 foot intervals directly above the runway.. you can see one of them in the shot and the others not visible are just off of top of camera.

i ended up putting one 5k on far left and one 5k on the far right.. both of them very close to being inline of Matt but pushed a little further away from camera oas not to ever reveal him completely unless he was under one of the space lights.. Put a half scrim on the left side where the whole thing begins as to cut down the amount of light since he was so close to it at the start..

Had a row of zip lights to light the foreground as needed... i actually ended up running them almost the entire length of track as I like what they did with the heavy smoke.

other than that.. just a few random par cans or 1k fresnels to light up various bits.

The lens is not full wide here.. I still had some room. Shot at 1/250th of a shutter, 120fps. I intended on 3 planes of focus.. foreground, skater runway then background ( cop car ) Nate had the Preston and would rack along my ride to make sure 2 of the 3 where in focus at all times at the right time.

Movietech Arco dolly with a Oconnor head... nothing else other than the preston hooked up to the camera, no monitors etc. Would do a take, grab the card and run over to Dan sitting in front of his mac in a corner of the stage to watch playback. Pretty easy stuff :)

Jarred, all I can say is thank you for putting this together.

That shot was a stroke of fantastic creativity, and what a great way to show off some of Scarlet's attributes. The detail, smoke, flames, muzzle flashes all looked great, and the blacks were so noise free that I had to keep watching over and over...it's got me excited about this camera all over again.

Again, thanks for taking the time to make that shot happen and for sharing it with all of us.

This Footage is a proving relic of what Mr Jannard Said about scarlet being the IDEAL tool for an Indy Cinematographer!! i wont use the word filmmaker because there is no film being used!
Having gone to a film school showed me how expensive a simple 5 minute shoot can become! Moreover! the amount of money you spend on just film alone with retakes!
So i My self im very excited to hear that soon indy cinematographers will be able to actually shoot at the same resolution as 35mm film at 120 fps. Im as happy as a Dog chasing its own tail!!! woooooot!!

This is scarlet 8x fixed used in conjunction with a preston yes? So the rotary encoder on the lens is solid and repeatable enough to hook up a regular (in this case wireless) FF unit to it? Or are we talking electronic interfacing to op the lens?

Good old fashioned gear on gear... :)

It was handy to see the focus distances on the screen ( and stored in the metadata ) from what Nate was doing mechanically standing on the other side of the stage with his little preston controller. The lens as encoders to tell it where it is at all times so autofocus or manual focus, it always tells you what distance is in critical focus.

That was pretty wild. The shot is awesome. Yearning to see a full rez shot from Scarlet. 120fps looks perfect...supersweet.

Thanks for putting this together - shot and directed.

Was a nice thing to wake up to. Looks like a fun shoot.

Were you wide open with this given the high speed? What was the ISO?

Still laughing about mel and dudley fighting over the blanket. cant stop watching it myself!! Props to everyone involved, especially the skaters.. these guys were seriously going for it over jarreds truck.. even when the camera wasn't rolling. crazy stuff.
