  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 8X fixed with Ted at Sundance!

Oh, absolutely. Frankly, I'm interested to see how close RED can get to the November 30th numbers with the changes that have been made. We'll have to wait and see!

I doubt the Redmote will be included in the base kit for Scarlet. The side handle has a full set of controls and menu lcd.

I always under the impression that the Redmote was a part to the Scarlet(or epic), as in you have to HAVE it to run the Brain. :confused5:

But if the grip has all the same controls but minus the bigger screen, I could do without it (the Redmote)

All the controls are on the body/grip. The point of the redmote is so you can control the camera without actually touching the camera (like if it's on a crane or something).

I have 2 questions:
1. How about on camera mic? Where would it go, if the LCD is on?
2. How does the fixed lens compare to some better lenses? What do I ned to look for when trying to decide on the top quality lens?

The fixed lens IS a top quality lens. Some more knowledgeable people on the forum have priced the lens alone at around $6,000.

Thank you, this is just incredible, what RED has done! I know for a corporate, commercial, short movie production the on camera mic is not an issue. I still shoot a lot of weddings (trying to move to corporate) though, so I'm hoping I'll be able to take this Baby out to see some brides. So the on camera mic would be nice. i haven't seen any pictures of Scarlet, or Epic for that matter with some mics mount on camera.

Yeah, that is the assumption of what needs to happen, but either a side handle, or battery module should add to the cost of the package

If the original package specifically called out including the Redmote and and the RedVolt as part of the overall package price, why are you suggesting that the package price by necessity is going up?

I'ts not like RED would overlook the need for the RedVolt to actually go somewhere when they announced the kit price. Not to mention that I, along with several others, asked specifically about this, and Red mentioned that the package will be ready to shoot as is (which means the battery will have a home), but simply declined to specify exactly what the configuration would be.

So this would seem to mean one of a few things:

1) The package includes the side-handle we have already seen as part of the price

2) The package includes the reear battery modules we have already seen as part of the price

3) The package includes a battery compartment of some type we have NOT already seen as part of the price

Nonetheless, we should expect that it will be a completely workable kit, including a battery soution as part of the price.

I'm personally hoping for #1... but if it's ome other option, I would consider adding a side hande for extra cost anyway.

I also hope #1 makes the most sense because, while there's a rotary encoder control on the lens barrel, it will control one of the 3 possible functions: focus, iris, or zoom. While the other 2 functions will be controllable via redmote, I'd suspect the controls on the side hande (another rotary encoder and a rocker) will be the most natural way to do so.

Exactly, why does it seem like RED forgot to mention what the REDvolt will go into.

Thats the battery, its not like the brick, its a small panasonic-like battery, it'll need somewhere to go.

But when you price it out, its crazy to figure out where you could add in a Side Handle/Rear Module without bumping the price up.

Body/Lens - $3000-ish
2.8"LCD (Discontinued) - $900
REDmote - $550
Side CF module - $500
REDvolt Battery - ??
Charger - ??

So thats already $4,950 worth of gear, that they had in the package deal for $4750, so saving $200, (not including the price of the battery and charger)

So the question is, with the added ~$1,000 for the HDRx capability, where will the price be? Where will the battery be? What will be our monitoring option?

Well, that depends.

If you are just looking to record a scratch track, RED may be releasing "button" microphones to slip right in the TRS jacks on the front of each brain. Small, easy, and probably cheap. There hasn't been any info about these recently, though.

If you are looking to record something more substantial, then you'll have room somewhere. RED has announced (some time ago) it's own dog bone system that would let you hang pretty much anything off the camera and put it right where you want it.

2. How does the fixed lens compare to some better lenses? What do I ned to look for when trying to decide on the top quality lens?

I haven't seen any specs on it or really any "real" footage shot with it but everyone seems to think it's pretty amazing. I'd bet.

the lcd doesn't have to mount right on top like we've gotten used to seeing. you can use a little arm to put it to the side, or do the same for your mic. or you could use some other rig.

Clearly RED's pricing for the fixed kit is bundling pieces to allow them to make profit on hte sale as a whole, but not as much as if people bought all of the pieces individually.

This isn't uncommon where veondors expect the value of the kit will help drive volume , which will help keep the manufacurer profitable.

It also seems to be in RED's DNA to offer the best price/performance they can, and to try and "do right" by the customer. So while I don't knw it for a fact, i suspec the amazing value the kit offers is likely influenced at least a little by the fact that they originally were hoping to offer people "3K for $3K". Things changed (as they are subject to do around here...), but I suspect they wanted to be gnenerous as possible, while still making good business sense.

Thus, I don't think you cab simply add all the pieces together and suggest that shaving a couple of hundred dollars off is the extra value the kit represnts. Nor can you take the delta of two items (the 2.8" vs 5" LCD), and assume that MUST be the price increase. It wouldn't suprise me if the profit margin for the bundle is SUBSTANTIALLY less than normal.

Clearly they had a plan for te battery in mind all along, when they originally priced the kit, whethter we've seen that part in mind or not. We know their's a $1000 increase for HDRx. That leaves some few hundred dollares (250 or more) to account for the larger LCD (if that's whats now incuded).

We'll see, but I doubt we are going to see significan movement in price for the overall kit, and that a battery home will be in that price.

Oh I'm not at all saying they aren't going to give us an amazing value, thats the whole reasoning behind the kit, they expect to sell these like hotcakes in a kit, so they'll make their money back.

I was just thinking of the profit they'd actually be getting if they included everything they wanted. If the price is $6k, I would consider that to be a good price to set it at, anything higher than that, and you'll lose customers, but still make back their money, and anything cheaper than that, and they are on a fine line of net profit.

(disclaimer: I have no clue how much these things are AT COST, I'm basing it off what I see on the market now)

I intentionally left pricing and details about power options out of my earlier summary post in order to state only what's known and avoid the areas still to be determined by RED.

But to add context to the price/package discussion:
  • We don't know where any of the pieces are being made or by whom, or where the final package is being assembled.
  • Currency exchange rates all over the world are extremely volatile, have been for the last year and probably will continue to be.
  • We don't know where RED is in the manufacturing continuum that runs from hand-built engineering prototype to mass-production assembly line.
  • No one, including RED knows what problems (i.e. unanticipated costs) may arise, since AFAIK, no one has ever mass-manufactured something as optically, mechanically, and electronically advanced as that Fixed Lens/Sensor assembly. OK - maybe others have come close, but not anywhere near RED's price point.
We all hope everything goes smoothly, and hope RED is closer to the mass-manufacture end of the process and farther from the prototype end, but we don't know.

I think pricing of SCARLET FIXED has a lot to do with ability to manufacture anticipated volumes (whatever those are, but even with the target market narrowed to the high end of the prosumer market and up, I think 6 figures are in the ballpark). I don't think RED has based its pricing on it being a boutique item.

They are out on the bleeding edge in manufacturing land and s--- can happen there. Let's give them time to figure it out and wish them luck.

And on a personal note, I hope my Scarlet comes with good karma. Manufactured by well-paid (by local standards) workers who take pride and give a s--- about the quality of their product.

Has anyone seen it, or heard more about it? I wonder how would it effect the balance of the camera, if you'd want to shoot hand held.

Something of an extreme example:

The idea is that you really can put anything anywhere. So, it's impact on balance would be entirely up to how the end user decides to arrange their gear on the camera.
