  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 8X fixed with Ted at Sundance!

So,it doesn't seem UNRESAONABLE to assume that's close to what will come in the $6K kit, but of course that's not confirmed.... but I believe we will be getting more than just a brain.

That's excellent news, thanks! I've only been here a few months, so I didn't know about the previous pricing. Me and Scarlet are one step closer to being together :)

For confused newbies who may be reading this thread:

Brain usually refers to the bare sensor, processors and body with built-in i/o's that vary depending on model. A side module for media completes the brain. SSD side module is standard for EPIC and optional for Scarlet. CF side module is standard for Scarlet. The side module also has a port for the RED LCD or evf, a record button and user buttons. No lens, no lens mount, no side handle or rear modules.

Brain in the case of Scarlet Fixed includes a 28-224mm (FF35 equivalent), 7.5~60mm (actual), t2.6, f/2.4 constant aperture cine-quality zoom lens that is integral with the sensor assembly and body. There is a Scarlet Interchangeable (aka Scarlet Cinema) that is a bare Brain as defined above. It will take the same lens mounts as the EPIC, plus a mini-PL RED mount for RED mini-primes - fast manual lenses specifically designed for the 2/3 sensor of the Scarlet Cinema.

Kit is flexible and includes a brain plus whatever RED decides to include at a package price that we all assume will be significantly lower than the total price of the individual components. Different iterations of the Scarlet Fixed Kit are given in posts above, but nothing is final yet.

The opinion widely held here is that the zoom lens that comes with Scarlet Fixed is worth the price of the Fixed brain including lens, or even worth the price of an entire Kit.

When people refer to a field kit they are estimating based on their individual shooting requirements, which for everyone would include media (CF or SSD), but the rest of the field kit would vary widely.

This camera would be a steal, (camera package ready to shoot out of the box) for 10K even, if: Scarlet can be shown to compare to the Alexa in shooting quality; has definite XLR inputs; HD-SDI outs; with a lens that can hold focus through the zoom range.

The demand for these cameras is going to be incredible. Indies, News Agencies, etc.

If Scarlet can push out 1080p using multiple camera setups for live events that would be incredible. With such a small package adding a wireless HDMI feed would make this an incredible camera.

I'd like to watch an F1 race someday at greater than 1080p and this camera could do it.

And to price it out...

Scarlet Interchangable (Cinema) WAS $2,750, until the addition of the HDR boards, so lets assume it comes out to an even $3,750.

Scarlet FIXED: WAS $3,000 for the BRAIN, which includes the INTEGRATED LENS. Now with the HDRx™™™™™ Boards, lets assume it is an even $4,000.

And the Scarlet Fixed KIT: was $4,750 for the Brain/Lens, Battery, Charger, 2.8inch LCD, Side CF Module. And now with the $1k for the HDR boards, it will cost $5,750...

BUT! They said they were not pursuing the 2.8" LCD here:
We are no longer making the 2.8" touchscreen.. it was impossible for any normal sized person to use.

So the next step up is the Touch Screen 5" PRO, which is $700 more expensive than the discontinued 2.8", so we'll have to see where that goes

The only thing not included in the tentative "fixed kit" that I want is the SSD module, which I would upgrade to. So that'll probably add a few thousand on, but if I can get everything I want for under 8k instead of 13k then I'll be thrilled.

Hopefully we'll get some concrete information in the next couple months so we can stop guessing.

I'll take it even without an XLR input.

And in the CES video, Ted had referred to what he was holding in his hand as "about $6,000". That had the Side grip w/ battery, and 5.0 LCD with Redmote.

That's the "kit" I'm praying for.

Fixed Scarlet with Side grip and battery, 5.0 LCD and the Redmote would be amazing for $6k. :tongue_smilie:

For confused newbies who may be reading this thread:

Great idea. I threw something together that shows the basic idea of modularity. Compared to other manufacturers, RED has really broken down the elements of its camera systems. The sensor and processor are physically separate than the recording hardware, which is all separate from the power/input hardware. And of course, the monitoring option is very open - RED LCD via the proprietary port or pretty much anything via HDMI.

Of course, there will be many more possible configurations...

Nice work, Michael! As much as I love these forums, it kills me to read everything, because I'm so anxious to get one of these in my hands!

I doubt the Redmote will be included in the base kit for Scarlet. The side handle has a full set of controls and menu lcd.

if it meant saving money I could pass on the 950 dollar Redmote for now, as amazing as it is, I am not working with people who will be messing with my camera setting or pressing record, other than me, nor do I often shoot on a jib/crane, so Im just fine reaching over and pressing record manually and doing all the settings from the side handle, <---- that is much more important an item for me...

thanks for posting. i know some french, but i'd say it's easy enough to get the gist of anyways. interesting dialect... sounds like an american-speaking french. :) sounds kind of like me...

Everything can change but Red said few months ago that the REDmote (not the pro version) would be included.

They also said clearly that the sidehandle is an option and won't be included. But I'm curious how you use the REDvolt battery without the sidehandle.

I guess we will find out when they announce the package options. The side handle is the cheapest combination of power and control though, so I would think that would be the low price package option. Otherwise you need the rear module adapter, the battery module package, and the Redmote, about twice the price.

Do you by chance have a link for that point about the side-handle not being included?

That's been my biggest question regarding the kit (how will it be powered?), and I've been watching carefully for any tidbits in that regard, and this is the first time I've heard this.

Was it a post here, or something said in an interview?

Thanks.

Well, unless Red as a hereforto unseen power option of course. Maybe a Dumb battery grip or the like.

Link please?

I have not read anything like that in relation to SCARLET FIXED.

The only thing I remember reading about was an optional LEFT side handle for stabilization, now visible in some of the photos of EPIC with the new mattebox.

I don't know that it was ever included, and if I recall, a number of folks from RED said that they were still considering the battery options.

Here is what the November 30th 2009 post says:
Scarlet 8x Fixed- $4750 (includes Brain/Lens, Side CF Module, REDmote, 2.8" Touchscreen LCD, REDVOLT battery and travel charger)

Obviously, there have been some changes:
  • No more 2.8" LCD, it's a 5.0" now
  • HDRx™ Price Increase
  • Introduction of Side SSD Option

But as far as I can remember, RED never settled or firmly announced a power solution - like including the sidehandle or a battery module, which is a little odd, because they include a battery, but no way of using it.

Remember, nothing is final yet.

Very true, they said it included the REDvolt, but that needs to be in the side handle.

I bet we'll see the package fully fleshed out, with the REDmote as an option, and the side handle as part of the package.
