Now that they announce all these cheap 4k cameras, maybe it's time to offer 4.5k to scarlet in the next firmware

Im pretty sure them cheap cameras cant keep up with the workflow and science of RED.

I can add more but the above speaks volumes IMHO.

Why are so many Scarlet owners so entitled. You have an awesome camera and you've had it for years. If you feel like you need more to comprete with the other cameras that are coming out RED has given you two great options! Upgrade your Scarlet body to Dragon, or Upgrade it to Epic, both the same price. You want 5K at higher frame rates and the later option for Dragon, go Epic. You want 5K now for less money with limited frame rates but unbelievable DR, go Dragon.

Well the red one mx was offered for 4000 at the end. Panasonic GH 4k is announced for less than 2000. Scarlet has 36fps at 4k, 12 at 5k. Why would not it be possible to have 2.40 4.5k at 7:1 or 8:1? I guess it would be ok to have the scarlet on par with the red one mx now. Before was too early, but now ....

I'm on the list for the dragon upgrade, since the announcement. But no news since then. That's why i would be happy to have 4.5k in the meantime.
But you are right to lecture me, i have to agree that you're a good Red boy. Sorry, louis, for being so greedy.

I can be greedy too but I have yet to harness the power of my Scarlet.

Every time I fire it up, I still get chills and learn new things.

I may not be on the same level as most of you folks but maybe its a good thing.

I only dream about an EPIC upgrade ;)

I agree atleast they can unlock a few more options. To keep us a bit over the curve with these new wave of dslr 4k cams etc. Keep us Red users enthused a bit by the ability to be able to see upgradable progress, All this new 4k wave of everything Tv,Phones, dslr,VideoCameras, are going to make the 4k world a bit subpar. (Im thinking of upgrading to a epic tho but that 10k sheesh lol)

'Use this one weird trick to overclock your digital cinema camera - RED engineers hate it!'

Version 5 does have a ton of new features, including a bit more performance for Scarlet.

Scarlet still delivers some of the best compressed RAW on the market. 4K these days is a marketing term. Carefully test these new cameras for codec performance, detail, noise, noise reduction, etc. And if some of these cameras do outperform Scarlet then by all means choose the tools that suit you best. No one camera is here to rule the world indefinitely. As long as there is a free market companies will compete. And that means better tools at lower prices.

If you pay $9,500 they'll unlock an amazing amount of options. ;)

The Scarlet today is already a much better camera than the Scarlet that I originally bought. The idea of equating 4k video on a phone with 4k on a Red digital cinema camera is one of the most absurd things I've ever heard.

No One is equating anything im just saying that the world is about to be in a 4k frenzy as u can see with those items..

Then I consider myself lucky to have this much experience in this game :)

Same thing happened with HD.

Them JVC options didnt quite pan compared to the real deal then.

Same craps gonna happen with 4K and up.

Let the world catch up, while we just power through ;)

I still feel maxing frames at 48fps at 4k is way more beneficial than 4.5k It really puts every RED camera in the zone of being all 4k with slo mo options.

I would love to see 48fps in 4k so we can finally take full advantage of HDRx in 4k finally on scarlet instead of having to go down to 3K to properly use it.

And there you are Scarletting away actually (hopefully) knowing what you're talking about and knowing what you're doing and positioning yourself to take advantage of the frenzy, over and above trying to push a non-existent 0.5k res.

Heck yeah I'd love 4.5K! and 48fps 4K! Why not? We don't want to shell out 10K for extras (not just yet, we are still learning). We are not selfish, or un-appreciateive...we are at the bottom of the barrel of RED and it would be amazing to give the "new" MX entry level camera (Scarlet) another awesome kick in performance. No harm in voicing that or asking for more, so don't let the hardcore Red fans and Epic owners stop you.

I don't think it's an "entitlement" problem, so much as a 'it should it be possible, right?' question. It's just peculiar that 4.5k = 4480x1920 = 8.6mp/frame, while 4k = 4096x2160 = 8.85mp/frame. Realistically it should be easier to process/capture 4.5k than 4k. Benefits being two fold: it'd give you even better spacial resolution (especially when downscaled or compared to cropping) and, better still, it'd give you MX's full 1.3x frame (just cropped to ~2.35:1)…

I've been fooling around with 4k WS at 5:1 and there is a noticeable difference… barely, but noticeable. It's a double down; better/lower compression applied to less pixels = double improvement benefits. Definitely had me salivating for some 4.5k love…

Saying 'if you want more, get a $10k Dragon/Epic upgrade' is just as unfair as expecting the Scarlet to do 4.5k… I think most people are not *expecting* any more from Scarlet, they're *hoping* for it. Better example, 4k WS at 36fps was never intended, but here we are two years later and it actually works well. It's more resolution than 3k (even when cropped to 16:9), and it's more framerate at "4k" than Scarlet-users were ever expecting.
