  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 2/3" Fixed @ CES

It's not just you Michael. I feel like an addict trying to quit smoking everyday. =]

I was thinking more along the lines of crack. I must hit the recon refresh button 300 times a day in the hope it says place you scalet/epic order. I know it's still months away though. Jim's going to have put us all through rehab after this. ;)

Canon will always be there for you if you feel like quitting...

trust me canon is not filling the craving. I'm sitting behind my edit station looking at a bunch canon 5d stuff... some amazing erupting volcano stuff from Indonesia and all I can think is god this stuff would have looked great on red in 3-5k.

Only red can satisfy me now.

Jim, how can I become one of the first to buy a scarlet? Is it "first come, first served", or are there certain people who can have it first, like with the epic?

You share this desire with about 10,000 others. I hope to add one to my Stage 2 Epic, but I don't know if Red 1 owners get any priority in the Scarlet release. The moment Scarlet orders are open, Red will be buried by that administrative task, so I believe they are holding off to concentrate on making cameras. I'm all for that decision.

Red customers will have a short amount of time to get in line for a Scarlet package. Quite normal they support their loyal customers.

Hmm. I'm not exactly sure what's being said here, but only those who pass on every stage for EPIC will have some sort of priority along with a discount. I'm not sure how the "priority" will still be applied, but I'm sure the small discount will...

yeah, i'm pretty sure i remember that RED1 customers get some kind of first crack at the scarlets... if that's the case, and even if it's not, i don't think we should expect one day out of the blue they start taking orders unexpectedly.

patience, everyone. i know it's tough.

There are two sides to the coin. On one side you show your appreciation to your loyal customers, but on another you don't want to be scaring off new customers, by putting them in a long queue.

Although lets be honest, it's tough to scare someone off of RED.

Ahhh I know that name. I'm thinking Vanuatu in a month or two...

is the Scarlet Cinema gonna release with it too or way after?

The Cinema Scarlet is currently set to be released after the FIXED.

I assume that the firmware for the FIXED is easier to finesse with their own single proprietary lens than making sure the several other mounts work for a CINEMA Scarlet...

I wonder. . . do you think its much different to program lenses into the firmware of the Scarlet Cinema than the Epic? I don't claim to be an expert let alone know anything about firmware, but it seems like a copy-paste would work for both models if they are using the same camera mount.

I'm much more familiar with stills tech, but I'm assuming RED is using some version of contrast detect AF. This involves analyzing sensor data, adjusting focus, reanalyzing the sensor, and so on to achieve maximum contrast. I'm sure RED carries out this loop extremely quickly, with intelligent algorithms to predict movement and interact with selected areas on the touch-focus screen. Since the Epic and Scarlet sensors are different sizes the firmware migration could not be a straight cut and paste. The loop frequency could also be different due to processing speed. But the sensors are similar enough, and the heavy programming is probably in the predictive algorithms and touch screen interface. So adapting to Scarlet is probably just that - an adaptation, not a redesign.

If they are using a phase detect system or a hybrid phase/contrast system the same would apply regarding firmware. And that would mean another leading edge feature.

Anyway, I'm not a designer or engineer and if someone more knowledgable wants to correct me I certainly won't be offended. I would not expect RED to weigh in with many details since I'm sure this is one of the many breakthrough features they need to protect.

Mhm. Back when Scarlet was expected to be 1080p...MAYBE 2K. :)

Yeah, that was early 2007, if I remember right, which I do not. Been here for 4 years, waiting on Scarlet. I have been looking for "hold-me-over-till-then" camera, and I seriously cannot pull the trigger. There is no camera that I find acceptable for less than $10,000, let alone in the < Scarlet price category. The GH13 is close to acceptable, however.

Yeah, we've been 'roughing it' with our HVX since 2008, waiting for a RED within our reach.
