  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 2/3" Fixed @ CES

LONG VERSION:
I'd say the biggest bang for your $10,000 bucks would be the FIXED Scarlet. A working configuration will come in right around $5,750. It's a 2/3" sensor with with a resolution of 3K (pixel count is 3072x1728).

Joseph, I don't think the original resolution of 2/3" Scarlet has changed. It is I believe 3072 x 1620 max. Native 1.89:1 cinema wide screen format like other Red sensors rather than 16:9.

Just in case anyone missed it: Side modules are not interchangeable between Epic and Scarlet.

Recording modules are all different between the 3 members of the family, Epic, Scarlet, and Red One. Scarlet body is shorter than the Epic so it takes its own unique Side SSD module.. all the rear modules and side handles though are swappable between both the Scarlet and Epic family.

Kinda puts a dent in the modular approach.

Not my intent. Just wanted to post info people may have missed so they can make informed decisions/plans.

So if you are planing to start with Scarlet, and plan to use SSD for both Scarlet and Epic via upgrade or ownership/rental of both, consider the rear SSD module, which should be cheaper since it does not have the record and user buttons that the side modules have.

The Side modules were not at the same level of snap on/off interchangeability as the rear modules anyway.

And another minor "dent": because of the difference in body width, Scarlets will need an adapter to use all rear modules except the standard Redmote. You would need one adapter to attach to the body, then all modules would stack after that, just like on Epic.

All of course subject to change and correction.

Last we heard the Rear-end module was also $1500, so the same.

The problem will be connecting the LCD/EVF without the side module.

It's a 2/3" sensor with with a resolution of 3K (pixel count is 3072x1728). This will not be the ideal camera if your main work is in STILL photography but it is a killer of a steal if you are are shooting MOTION and want quality pictures to draw from.

The next step up would be to the EPIC-S which will feature a full S35 sensor, 5K resolution (and I speculate it to have up to 60fps at its max resolution). What this means is you will be able to shoot 13.8MP REDCODE RAW images at that rapid of pace. If 5K happens to be "too much" for a little project, you still have the option of scaling the image down real-time to 1080p (maybe 2K). The only downside is that it may cost you $17,000 to get a decent rig up and running. The upside? No other company offers anything close to this...not even something that we can compare to in price.

One other thing I should mention, you will be able to use the Canon glass you were going to use on the Canon you were thinking of buying.

SUMMARY:

The FIXED would be best if you are limited to $10,000. You might want to do your best at getting an EPIC-S. If you can't, the beauty of it is that RED makes it easy to migrate to the next brain purchase...

Forgive my lack of lens knowledge but I was looking at the fixed 8x if I went for the Epic-S what equivalent lens would I need for the Epic-S?
Basic all-rounder lens with zoom/AF ?

Are you saying you want the fixed scarlet lens on the Epic-S? From what I've read, the lens on the fixed 8x is worth about $6,000 on its own, so you might be better off just getting the fixed model.

Good information. Thanks. I mean cost wise, I would be spending about the same for one package or the other but the video from a fixed lens Scarlet is still better than the 1D with it's aliasing issue I would imagine. So now, for me, it comes down to availability. I'll have to see where it's at in April. Maybe spend the extra for the Epic.

Although I found this article that appeared in Broadcast Engineering January 6, 2011.

Most of the cost-cutting will come through the amount of bandwidth available to the camera, which should be about half that of the larger and more expensive EPIC-M and EPIC-X models. The cut in bandwidth will lower the price but also drop the maximum available frame rate. RED has dropped the fixed-lens version of the camera that it had previously announced.

The new EPIC-S represents a significant upgrade over the originally promised 3K Scarlet camera and will shoot at 5K resolution with RAW, SSD recording and many of the other features reserved for larger cameras.

Are they referring to the fixed lens Scarlet as being dropped or was there a fixed lens Epic planned?

Just a mistake on the reporter's part.

Btw, I agree with Joseph ... if your budget is $10,000 then definitely Scarlet Fixed is your camera. Like many beginning RedUsers, I so easily forgot all the other things that come along with working professionally with these cameras ...

- Media
- Extra batteries
- Support (should rigs, tripod, etc)
- Mattebox/filters
- Fast enough computer
- Backup hard drives
- Possible red rocket (if you want superfast transcoding)
- Editing software
- Etc

Nothing on this list above is cheap, so keep that in mind. Yes you could rent some of them, but that adds up fast as well, especially if you have a lot of shooting days or want to use the camera all the time.

Bottom line: You could get the Scarlet for $6,000 and still go WAAAAAAAAAY over your $10,000 budget just moderately spending on the other things.

Anyway, don't mean to dishearten you ... by all means get the camera (as soon as it's ready), some extra media, do the best you can on the other things and start shooting!

Also, I think you mentioned April is when you'd have the money -- that gives you a bit more time to possibly save for other things, if you want/need them.

My comments were just give you a a more realistic picture of expenses :)

Actually I do expect to be over budget but that would have been the same with the Canon. A couple of good lenses, flashes, wireless etc. and it's right up there. So I'm actually pleased with the price point of the RED platform. My first project is a documentary on Social Security and involves many interviews. So even though another platform would work I prefer the best video quality I can get. Scarlet fits the bill. And hopefully I can start shooting in June.

Here's one of the interviews I did at Sundance regarding Scarlet

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=54655

It's probably not super easy to find on that new thread, so figured I'd post it on this long running thread that lots of people are tracking.

gotta love the Harry Potter/ Hogwarts look... and the creepy hotel piano music, even with the focus challenges that Chris had while shooting it on his DSLR... still he did a good job shooting the interview and asking good questions.

You can see some peeks of the latest iteration of the UI in this interview, as well as some other goodies...

I believe that's the first time we heard mention of the 2:1 compression. I know things can change, but is it in the plans to have 2:1 at 120fps or is this limited for lower framerates such as 1-30fps?

We are no longer making the 2.8" touchscreen.. it was impossible for any normal sized person to use.
I am 5' tall and I can use 2.8".I think this big guy is discriminating us!
Wink!

Thanks for pointing this out Ted. Love the new touch screen functionality, beautiful.
