  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 2/3" Fixed @ CES

If I didn't have exams at Uni next week...I would have hopped over to CES in a heartbeat!

Very excited, the 2/3" Fixed is up and running, as long as I can get one for less than $10K, I'm happy! :Angel_anim:

Package price is still being worked on.. as you all know a lot has changed since that original number. Should be in the same ballpark though.

That's great. I'm sure it's value will far exceed the price point as with everything you guys put out there :)

I know it's probably still too early to say and you get asked this all the time but when can we expect to be able to put money down and get a reservation in on the Scarlet Fixed, at least in relation to final release date? 1 month before, 2 months before, etc.

Thanks

I hope ballbark isn't defined by how far you can throw a baseball... :)

I like the fact that the most important image variables in terms of camera operation seem to be only one touch away. Want to change the ISO? Press ISO. White balance? Hit it. Frame rate? All the way to the left. Fun.

Thanks for the interview and followup comments Ted and Jarred.

And thanks for going out of your way to...erm...buy a battery, Tonaci!

What a great way to start the workday!

I'm also curious to learn of the recording media options for the final spec/offering.

Looking forward to it! =)

We are no longer making the 2.8" touchscreen.. it was impossible for any normal sized person to use.
Good news for the Stage 3 Epic package!

Something tells me everyone in this forum will own at least one of these. It looks brilliant! Plane to make them in the thousands, and fast!!!! I can see shooting whole high levels docs on this and it's twin 2/3 detachable at 3k.

Jarred how is the battery life on this and 2/3 detachable? For us guys who spend extended time in the bush or up mountains, long battery life is one of the most important features. I'll probably add a Bomb EVF which hopefully save life.

Use red bricks!
A RED Brick will last "forever" with a Scarlet... it is good for a couple of hours easy with EPIC.

Use red bricks!

2 hours is forever? A couple of hours with a red brick will get me no where! Last shoot I did, I was away from power for full week with intensive shooting. I went through 12 batteries on a 7d which last several hours each. Hopefully the smaller batteries on scarlet will last longer. Especially if boot times are somewhat slow, you need to keep the camera running a lot.

For us adventure seekers some of the things we have to consider when dealing with digital media and cameras

- Battery life
- Battery price (can I afford 10?)
- Recharge time (can I recharge all of them when I do find power for a brief time or do I need several chargers)
- Battery weight + Chargers (try carrying 12 red bricks around)
- Card size
- Off load times (I often will shoot 1-3 hours footage per day or 1 to 2 32gb on a 7d. With redcode RAW how many cards will I need per day, and is it possible to off-load them in a night? How long will the laptop last if away from power for a week. I'll buy a brand new computer as soon as light peak or USB3.0 comes out just to cut transfer times down in the field (despite the fact I just got a new one) Too bad ESATA is not on Macs. Parallel cards are useless as you need proper power on the external drives.

With new technology I always adapt to what the limitations are, but I'm so eager to get a Red, but I'm curious if it will be right for everything I do.

Michael, I think Jim's original post was implying that Scarlet's power draw is quite a bit less than Epic's and so the Scarlet would last several hours on power that would be sucked down in two by an Epic.

He probably doesn't have a hard figure for us because he's too busy shooting on his Epic, and doesn't have time for the little guy.

Of course the Red Brick also might be prohibitively heavy for your application ...

I think the best option for low budget and for "adventure" shoots is going to be shooting with a more compressed version of REDCODE.

REDCODE 10 or something like that.

I think the mere fact he created scarlet proves he has time for the little guy!

Also, just because you intend to use scarlet does not mean your a little guy. Scarlet is a mean "little" bugger, and put in the right hands can be every bit as professional as anything out there that costs 10x the price... Unless your ideas are epic! Then of course you need 5k.

I'd be happy to get 2-3 hours on a fixed from a smaller battery using the Bomb EVF. Needing a touch screen to control functions does scare me a bit, as a 5-7 inch screen will draw a lot of power. But again, I'll adapt!

Hopefully the smaller batteries on scarlet will last longer.

They won't. That's why they are smaller. But there will be XL batteries for the rear-end powermodule. But as far as I remember these bigger batteries still won't last longer then the bricks does. This is due to the difficulties of travelleing with large batteries aparantly.

The battery in the side handle is lasting around an hour of powered mixed standby / recording with side handle, Redmote and 5" LCD. With the RED BRICK its lasting about 4 and a half hours.

Those numbers change everyday though as we improve efficency it goes up, and we add more features and turn stuff on it goes down.

Bones are good. Check back on Friday, and Ill show you someone else that really likes bones.

Heh heh heh....

I'm trying to understand what this means... Sounds enticing

Any help? :)

I will be working at CES and may have to look for you Ted! Although I'm a stage 3 Epic guy, I would love to see the Scarlet in real life and working!
Very excited about the news on the 5" vs. 2.8" touchscreen as well!

At some point it becomes more effective and less hassle to get a little generator at your base camp than buying 10+ batteries.
Unless you don't have a base camp :)

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah !!! Time has almost come !!!!!!!
