  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 2/3" Fixed @ CES

We are no longer making the 2.8" touchscreen.. it was impossible for any normal sized person to use.

Hey, I resemble that remark!

Anyway, the screen will now definitely scream "pro", even if the camera is tiny.

And like others, hope the price doesn't increase too much. Yeah, I know it'll be more than fair, but I still like to save $$

I hope the monitor doesn't have a big "RED 5.0 PRO" on the back.

The whole "pro" designation seems like the company has to declare to the world that "Hey, these are PROfessional products." Like duh. I know the "PRO" tag was developed to distinguish the second gen lenses from the first set, but personally, it's time to get rid of that moniker.

If Red hasn't proven itself to the world by now by the quality and breakthrough of Epic and all the new products, then I don't know who has. It's like Panavision having to have "PRO" on its cameras.

My 2 cents anyway.

It's getting exciting! How many did a quick mental scramble to decide if a last minute trip to CES was feasible?

The 2.8" screen did sound a little small. I was leaning heavily towards upgrading. I doubt this will be a disappointment to many people, even if it means a small price increase. Does that mean no 2.8" screen at all, or it just won't be touchscreen?

And by the way, did Ted say the aperture was opened up to 2.5? That's a little better than expected!

Was set on F stops... f2.4 is the maximum (constant) f aperture on the fixed.

Is the REDMOTE an option or it's included in the starting kit ?

The (1) REDmote (2) a REDvolt battery/and travel charger (3) 2.8" LCD Touchscreen (4) and side CF module is what was last stated to be included with the Fixed Scarlet...for $5,750. Of course change happened/happens...

I'm asking that before I believe that in the video it said that the REDMOTE is an option. Don't have a good sound on my office computer. ^^'

Sounds good to me. So max T stops are still 2.6? That means we get the light transmission of 2.6, but the slightly shallower depth-of-field benefit of F2.4, correct?

I'll be findable at CES over the next 3 days. If anyone wants to grab an interview or check out the Scarlet in person (other than Tonaci and Justin of course, they have already had their quota of impromtu interviews lately :-) please just drop me an email ted@red.com I'll be checking in on the 27 or so Apple products of various sizes and shapes that have internet service that I'll have with me at CES.

Looking forward to catching up with some of you in person, and maybe dropping by the Engadget and/or Gimzodo work trailer again if they will let me in to show the working version this year! (and any other place that's cool to visit... let me know and I'll stop by)

and FYI what I'll bringing along is still a prototype version, not the full shipping config, so I'll be holding it and running it... pretty soon you will all get your chance to shoot with it and show us what you can do with this baby.

Of course we are gonna ask... "What is the maximum f aperture when fully zoomed out?"

F2.4 constant through the whole range, sounds like.

Edit: Jarred beat me to it.

by the way, somewhat if not entirely off topic... I just got done watching the season premiere of Southland on a nice big screen (that many of you know is shot on the RED ONE) I must say, I love this show. and I know I'll take a lot of flak for it, (because I'm a big protagonist of sweet spot exposure, as anyone that has taken REDucation will tell you) but I think the Cinematography is brilliant. Gutsy, risk taking and driving the exposure dynamics for creative effect in really ballsy and powerful way... not everything has to live within the 13 or so stops of range, and the camera shows some really interesting story telling when it's pushed for the hell of it... I think Jimmy Muro, Chris Chulack and of course John Wells and their entire cast and crew should get a tremendous amount of credit for the work they are doing to make this show one of the best hours on TV (and I'm not just saying that because it's shot on our camera... I'm saying it because it's a really good show.

make that it's own post...too important to be buried on page 4 of a scarlet thread...great work needs to be highlight so we can all point to it when asked by producers/directors or DP's.

just one man's opinion.

Bones are good. Check back on Friday, and Ill show you someone else that really likes bones.

Heh heh heh....

Heheh, such a tease :) Looking at your history of footage, my bet is on a cute little puppy... Well - something like cute and little...

We are no longer making the 2.8" touchscreen.. it was impossible for any normal sized person to use.

Good move, thanks... This camera will be great for interview stuff - Ted, get ready for another 2-hour interview - this time, shot on RED... :)

excellent Tobias... I'll be ready for another marathon interview session with you... just promise not too many questions about the various configurations, etc...(there are tons of options and configs) I can't keep all that stuff in my brain... I'm too excited about EPIC and Scarlet coming to life (and EPIC working on a lot of really big movies, even at this very early stage of those cameras being out on gigs.

and on the Southland front, maybe Brook (since he worked on it for a while) or one of the other guys will move that to it's own thread for more discussion on that... I'm still thinking about how much I liked the look of the show and the content and direction of the show.

Nice to see another Tonaci iPhone sneak peak vid. Can anyone official from RED confirm the price is stil 5750?

Package price is still being worked on.. as you all know a lot has changed since that original number. Should be in the same ballpark though.
