I shot some 1K at 120 FPS, just some cars going down the road, handheld, nothing dramatic.
I processed and saved as 1920 sized video. Poor afternoon lighting, but was looking at how I could make it presentable.

Are there other links to Scarlet 1K material to look at ?

I agree. It's useable for web stuff with a little sharpening. No worse than most of the DSLR footage the average joe shoots. Few people would be able to tell the difference if you threw in a 1K shot or two somewhere.

It looks ok if you put time into it. I've seen some good stuff, but it really serves no purpose to anything I really shoot. Kind of a fun part of the toy.

I'd still hope we can get this frame rate at a higher resolution either with the Dragon upgrade or firmware in some way even in a burst.

I did put some time into it ;) .... did you see the detail in the gate or street sign in my sample ?Would my sample pass as 'real' 1920 ? Just wondering.

Here is a still from the video that was shot at 1K setting 120FPS:

I've got some surf footage that I'll post up. Looks great for all the YouTube and online stuff I do. A bit of contrast with some sharpening in post goes a long way. Or a heavy handed grade is an easy way to get by...

I shot some skate video footage @ 1K and I like it. Sure it's not comparable to the higher res footage especially because of the crop factor. But for some speciality shots I'm glad its there and I deem it as useable. It intercuts fine with 1080. I'm far from shouting that this is the best you can get of course, and I'm so wishing that we will be able to get a little bit more res/fps love further down the road (yeah, sorry.... that old story), but for now I'm glad it's available for certain shots.

Yeah it looked great! I was just saying for me it serves a really limited purpose, if any at all. It's fun to have, but nothing I'd really go to if someone asked me to shoot it on a project.

Dragon upgrade which will include new boards installed in Scarlet to manage the data flow, etc. SHOULD at the very least bump Scarlet to 120fps at 2K. I think this is a MUST if not higher for the Dragon upgrade. But for me I'm mostly focused on low-light and dynamic range....but 120fps at 2k or more will factor into my decision for the upgrade. And price of course ;)

This has been discussed a good amount all over. But I really think at a more than 6K upgrade cost the Scarlet really should be much closer to 200fps at 2K.

man that would be great. i know its been discussed/dissected ad nauseum, but i would be ELATED if the Dragon upgrade got the scarlet to an Epic (non dragon) Lite. 3k @120fps. 4k at 48-60 fps. i don't think i would buy another camera or even upgrade, at LEAST until the next RED upgrade.

Just threaten Jim by saying you will identify your footage, whether YouTube or silver screen, as shot on RED Dragon. Jim cares about the reputation of his cameras... he'll likely insure that a Scarlet Dragon will look very good no matter the framerate used. '-)

I have mixed feelings about 1k HD and 1K WS, When you got a lot of light and shooting at a 4-5.6, then its useable for 1080 stuff. But when you wanna do low light stuff and start adding crazy filtration then it gets super soft. Which can be fine for some things, for example I just did a anamorphic lens flare filter test. And I wanted something like a aged kodachrome look to it. I shot everything at 2kHD at 60fps but I threw in a 1k HD just to see how it would handle the Blue Streak filter when it comes to softness. You can look at the ungraded, in terms of softness, I added some film grain to the graded. It was a lot more softer with the filter then I would expect it. Which is due to the glow the filter produces in the highlights. I never really use 1k ws though, every test I did, I just didn't like the softness. The whole time I shot this test I wish I had a epic, haha. 5k at 96fps, it's hard to resist...

Scarlet 1K now intercuts well with 2K I believe.

I think I've got it looking even better now.
Here is a new version of the test footage shot at 1K 120fps settings.
Processed to 2560 x 960 size. I believe that this can be intercut with 2K footage now with no excuses.
I'm liking this. A lot.
Please take a look and tell me I'm not dreaming.
( it's an mp4 and seems to like being played in VLC. Media player plays stuttery. Not sure about Mac. )
I'll shoot skateboarding with it this weekend. 8mm lens and 120 fps should be fun!

Do not comment unless you have seen the above results....

I guess there really isn't much interest in the 1K mode.
Will the level of interest increase if I post a 6K video derived from 4k footage that I shoot ?
I would welcome someone with imatest to test the actual verifiable resolution. Anyone in Los Angeles have the charts to shoot ?

For something super-stylized, like music videos etc.. I would use it in a heartbeat. For some dramatized in 2K, I would not unless I had a department to fix 'holy-crap' issues and at that point why didn't I rent an epic for a day. Great job though.

Les, I think I have to test for myself to see how it compares to 1080. I'm really interested in how it comes out. Can you post a R3D of your clip?
Maybe I'll try to capture 1080 and 1K and compare them. Too bad I can't shoot a real side by side with 2 cams :)

Hehe Paul, I believe you have an EPIC by your side anyways, don't you? :) So for these speciality shots, it's an easy choice if you can grab the big dog.

My tests were to evaluate shooting without the low pass filter that most cameras have in front of the sensor.
This results in some aliasing, which is subsequently reduced by some special post processing that I used.
So 1K shot with stock camera can not get the same 'look'.

I noticed in the Scarlet user manual in the section on cleaning the OLPF , it states " If you have a OLPF installed .... " as if it was an option to have.
Removing it is easy, it's in a rubber frame and is held in by friction only, which I noticed while adding the RED supplied flare guard they kindly sent me, with the tool and instructions on how to install it.

Where, how did you get a "Red supplied flare guard?

Found this article: http://nofilmschool.com/2012/01/red-scarletepic-owner-renter/

from 1/25/12

a quote:

One, RED has quietly released a revised Optical Low-Pass Filter drop-in anti-flare guard that sits in front of the OLPF (pictured) for anyone experiencing “sensor flare,” which I have not encountered but which can rear its head in specific backlit conditions. It’s free for existing owners (either to install yourself, which takes 5 minutes, or to have RED do it) and will be integrated into future cameras.
