  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scaled...will it ever happen Jim?

I really would just like to know if we'll ever see a scaled r3d rather than crops for when shooting lower Rez? I know I for one would love a 1080p/2K scaled from the sensor rather than an enormous crop. There may be same fps drop to processing power required, but if Sony can do it????

Doesn't the Meizler do that? Or HD-SDI out? (although, I know, not R3D)

I have to admit - the idea of getting a raw R3D at 1080P from a sensor that has roughly 4 times the pixels sort of boggles my mind. How do you do that? I guess you have to down sample the raw data by 1/4, keeping it raw? Interesting...

You would really like to have a line skipping mode?

Did I say that? No I didn't and if course not...

A proper downsample, debayer etc. If it could be done without another module straight to SSD...wow, I and imagine thousands of others would be pretty darn grateful.

Unfortunately that would undermine the very foundation of RDC.
Never going to happen IMO, not in JJ lifetime...

Not for high speed non of them work...

I'd really like some kind of redlogfilm r3d going to the ssd since i really find redlogfilm a great format for features. [ i.e. if there was an option of log color compression before the wavelet spatial compression, you be able to push the spatial compression to 5k]. I'd say in 99% of the cases most people have some kind of lossy compression turned on when they shoot r3d. If you tweaked what you said ... it fit's within the red philosophy, if anything, shows the flexibility of redcode by adding another option aside from the spatial compression ratio. A option for this would also be nice for post ... would make a type of redlogfilm r3d DI (would allow us to write in post to a r3d).

It will be interesting to see what choices RED makes when it comes to putting Dragon output into a 16 bit file. For a number of reasons (data load, decoding overhead, etc) going beyond 16 bits is serious additional "weight". Must R3Ds be linear encoded? Could Dragon be the inflection point for shifting to log? I don't know all the processing issues and maths but its an attractive theory. The Cineon log curve got much more useful image data out of a 10 bit container (like DPX) that linear ever could, with very little penalty.

Maybe Graeme can explain why I'm daft but I sure like the concept of a 16 bit log standard that could theoretically hold close to 20 stops...

Ahhhh sorry Jacek, that doesn't fly anymore with RED and the Meizler module doing Prores at 2K/1080p. Before that announcement I agreed with you but that point is thoroughly moot now.

True true- Meizler does it...

Again, if it is being done for the Meizler and in Prores baked in files and the fact their high frame rates give us less than 4K and down to 1K, there is no reason a 2K/1080p r3d scaled onto their SSD's shouldn't an option. My question is just if it us possible with existing hardware on the EPIC and if it is something RED are doing...simple. In my world and I expect a vast majority it would be a great feature...mainly for over cranking without cropping the sensor. A reduction in high fps is fine by me to get scaled instead of cropped.

I think it's fair to say that if they could they would...
