  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Samyang 24/1.4 coming

Very promising. There is some CA but limited. Sharp, seems like low distortion... an other step in the right direction. Wonder about breathing and mechanics feel. I'd like to see them make a f/1.4 50mm, no need to waste time with a faster single, make them all match f/1.4 is enough

The 35/1.4 mechanic build feels really nice. Distortion is a bit too much, but seems like the Zeiss has about the same, too.

I wonder how Canon could do such an amazing 24/1.4, almost no barrel at all.

It should be 1.4 for all the lenses, just don't make the 50 too small and light :)

Would you plese eleborate more detail, why the AC point of view are not acceptable for the canon still lenses ?

Thank you.

Hi,

1. the lack of hard stops at the two end of the focus throw won't allow to calibrate your wireless follow focus, or even with a regular ff you can easily turn it over infinity or close-point and lose all your marks. Also the focus throw is usually very short, and usually there are only numbers, without lines, so it's hard to be precise with them. Imagine you have to pull focus from 1.2 meter to 1.8 m, and there is only 1m and 3m mark.
2. the lack of manual aperture makes changing the iris during the shot impossible (you can, but there will be 1/3 stop steps)

@ Mike

What I was implying in my own dumb way was that with mass modern precision manufacturing techniques including lenses allows for a far higher degree of accuracy then previously obtainable.

From memory (always dangerous) Samyang were in the business of making specialised lenses for security cameras & they figured they could also do lenses for a larger market. These lens are not like the sigma lenses of old. Speaking of which I believe Sigma lens quality has vastly improved using these same manufacturing techniques.

I get ya.....just your way of saying they are quality lenses.....which from what I've heard they are
A smaller company like this may be more receptive to "cinemizing" these lenses then would Nikon or canon.....

@ Mike

I reckon you're so right. These guys would be very receptive if they saw a market for cine glass. These lenses are also "full frame" so no crop issues, 4 or 5k.

Thank you for the inf. and I def. will get a try on this lens when I get my Scarlet.

I've read numerous times from guys using it for video that the 35mm 1.4 shows heavy breathing. I have the 85mm 1.4, which is excellent.

@ Michael

I'm not sure if your talking about the canon 35 or the Samyang. I own a Samyang 35 f1.4, there is hardly no breathing on my lens.

Here is a quick test I did today with the 35/1.4:

I have a Contax Distagon 35/2.8, for some comparison (it's also a still lens, though):

I'm more concerned about the barrel distortion the Samyang has. I saw the Zeiss 35/1.4 has about the same, though.
--> better go for slower lenses, if you don't need the extra speed

Akos:

Thank you for that test. Is this considered a lot of breathing for a lens? The Zeiss appears to breathe about as much, if not more, than the Samyang.

I think its average for a still lens. Im not very sensitive on breathing, usually. For 90% of the shots, there are no big&fast changes in focus, and when there is one, and you think it'll be disturbing, you can fix it in post with a little magnifying.

Great test. I see what you mean on the barrel distortion.

Cheers.

Yeah that's another thing I like about the resolution of REDs, fixing breathing in post.

Any news on the cine versions anyone?
