  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So I dunno how it happened but I bent a pin on my CF side module.... Arggggg (I got 2 so I'm good)
Decided to install the other one I have. I got to thinking hum Standard SATA power AND DATA cable.
Screw it I say to myself if I damage the cam I will get it fixed. Attached a Samsung 840 500GB Drive
and what do you know.... the F$%ker mounted AND formated. It will only do "up to" all forms of 2k
maybe it's cause it's a pretty crappy drive. I shot some footage took it to my puter and it mounts as a RedMag??!!
Pulled the footage and I have to say NICEEEEEEEEE! Anywho it works and if your shooting 2K @ any frame rate
this may be a option for you. :drool5:

Oh BTW it's a RED One sorry.

I hope I did this right! Here's a few pictures (I think lol)

Well, that is no surprise, really.

All unsupported media that "mounts" can record up to 2k on R1.

Problem is: why would you record a lot of 2k?

This is REALLY interesting, I have two bodies as well, I may have to buy a high performance drive and try it out my self. If a better drive can record at 4k... I may be buying a few more drives and going "after market". Vmount the drive and bam, were good to go.

Granted I still dont want to mess up the cameras so maybe I wont. Let me know what you find out!

This was known to be possible for many years on the Red One with "unsupported" CF cards, so this isn't really anything new. It was the same story with the CF too; any "unsupported" card could do 2k recording. I would say it's highly unlikely that you'll find any SSD drives that the R1 will allow you to do 4K...

For some people 2k is enough imho. If the drive has fast enough sustained write speeds I don't see a reason
why 4.5K wouldn't be possible! Alot of drives have burst speeds of 4-500MB/s then yo look at the sustained speeds
and duh ONLY 150mb/s lol. I think this is a great way without damaging your camera to get a bunch of at least 2K footage
without re-braking the bank! I suppose you could just buy a field recorder and go that route.

Theoretically, you could use one of the new CFast cards in a specialized adapter and it would work like a charm. I say "theoretically" because the new cards are designed to be written to - or so the blah blah from the manufacturers says - in the same manner that is required by RED CF cards, which are written to differently than standard CF cards. More or less sequential writes vs random writes if my understanding is correct as flash memory is not designed with sequential writing in mind, at least that was the case until CFast 2.0 came out.

I honestly don't see the R1 as being that huge an amount of work depending on your situation and workflow. Commercials and narrative it can be a PITA with the weight of the camera but interviews for me it's a breeze compared to shooting 5d and having to start the talent over once you hit the dreaded time limit. And god forbid it's a celebrity who doesn't like being stopped. 2k is just fine for that kinda stuff and editing in PP is easy. I usually shoot 4k, which gives me edit options but 2K would work. I'd totally shoot 2k R1 over 5d or even BMC and probably Sony.

I do have a little bit of a question. Why go through the work of shooting with a Red One if only recording 2K?

Well you don't have to shoot "everything" in 4K do ya?? Haha. Maybe you wanna take ur RedOne on maybe a paid family reunion shoot
or a wedding shoot to make some extra money for that Epic. I dunno having 500GB of 2K footage ain't a bad thing (that's if it can "see" the full 500GB lol I haven't got that far yet)! There's still a TON of information in 2K video! This is for the folks that's saving up for the side SSD module, RedMags, And Redmag readers as well
Cheers

Maybe you guys could petition red to open up the firmware on a Red One MX beta firmware to allow for instance Sandisk 480gb extreme pro ssds?

certainly the drive is fast enough, and any problems you have would have to be considered your own problem (I.e. unsupported)

You would be better of using an external recorder in my opinion.
