This as of this morning via Canon Rumors.

Is this what’s coming today?
Received some information about the new video camera that is being announced today in Hollywood.

  • Name: Canon EOS 300C
  • EF and PL Versions
  • Dual CF Card Slots
  • Built in ND
  • Super35 Sensor
  • HDMI and HDSDI out
  • Hot shoe mounted monitor w/ 2 XLR ins
  • 1920 x 1080 resolution
  • Also is able to record out of SDI

This would imply that 3K is only half-good-enough.

and 3K is not 3k... more like 2.4k

500 lines more than the "rumored" Canon, if it resolves full HD. It is hardly light years ahead it resolution.

Unless you plan to do a bit of reframing in post.... you should stop laughing at the idea of 1080/2K... because that is your target output too.

DR, low light, frame rate, codec.... all, imho, FAR more important

Everything is price dependent. If Canon has a 4K sensor recording at 1080P it'll be real resolution (probable). If the codec is good (probable), dynamic range is Alexa(possible) and the price is under $10K(doubt it) it'll be a hit.

I think Scarlet at 3K (s35mm) would be the perfect product positioning for RED. But I still wonder if it'll be 4K. Perhaps there are two Scarlets... 3K and 4K. If Scarlet is 3K everyone with a 4.5K RED ONE MX will breath a sigh of relief their cam didn't just take a big value hit.

Canon is just trying to catch up to Sony and Panasonic, but not at the high end of the spectrum.

I think the 3 (3 nov) is for 3D. I think canon has a new 3d camera. In this case, scarlet is enough?. Maybe a new scarlet 3d?. I vote for this. If not, what the news here?, price?, is the only advantage vs epic.

I vote for a 3d canon cam.

saludos,

Jose.

I guess 4K capturing, 2k internal recording in something like cinema DNG..

This camera will probably outsell Scarlet globally.
To be honest, I'd say that's pretty much a slam dunk even if the price points are somewhat similar unless Red pretty drastically increases their rate of production. Canon's a much a larger company and on that basis they're more than likely going to be able to crank out their product at a much faster rate. Sometimes it's less about having the best camera for the cost and more about having a good camera for the cost that people can get their hands on in a timely manner.

With that said, if we buy a camera today it will almost certainly be a Scarlet.

I've noticed Canon video cams - xl1, xl2, etc. - have rather poor low light capabilities. Before buying one I'd have to try it out in low light situations first. I did some recording studio shots with my 7D in low light and the clips were unusable - heavy noise in detailed areas.

That cam would be a joke, especially for the cinema.

That is a bit hyperbolic to say it is a "joke", without knowing the price or even the camera's dynamic range (more important than resolution IMO) or low light capability. Sure, it's not the 4K resolution we all clamor for, but it is easier to edit and some people wouldn't need to go out and purchase a powerhouse computer out of their budget.

Are people forgetting that the biggest movie of all time that brought in $3 BILLION dollars at the box office was shot in 1080p and had a GORGEOUS picture? Avatar anyone? :yesnod:

Would I prefer to shoot 3k or 4k over 1080p? Absolutely! However, that doesn't mean a high quality 1080p cam becomes a joke. I bet the low light quality will be killer and who knows how much dynamic range it will end up with. The scarlet will beat in in resolution, but most likely the Canon will be better in low light if the Scarlet remains 2/3" sensor. Not to mention the depth of field will be much deeper on the Scarlet if it's still 2/3". So, there will be trade offs for either one most likely.

I hope the Scarlet after cost of recording media and upgrading my Quadcore to be able to handle it that it doesn't end up out of my price range or else I won't have a choice, but to either continue waiting another several months to buy or will have to consider the Canon (depending on price) or Sony FS100U.

Can't wait for the Scarlet announcement to see what has changed & how much it'll end up being. I hope it's within my range after I have everything needed to shoot with one.

If it has similar low light to the 1D-x... I don't think it will be a problem... that thing sees in the dark, by all account

Nah, not really. Most projects are still being mastered between 2k and 1080. I'm much more concerned with photosites/light sensitivity, and latitude. Those image characteristics speak much more to a high end 'film-look' than having more pixels. Especially for cinema.
