  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ruairi Robinson to direct live action AKIRA...

I personally think Ridley Scott would be a bad choice. Of the short list of big guys, the only one i'd be interested in is Cameron.

I agree that i was not impressed by the short. didn't like the story or the directing. Special effects were bad ass though.

I liked the animated short

Whoa?? I thought Ruairi's short was hands down the most professional short I've ever seen, all the way down to the titles. And I've seen quite a few shorts. The shots, acting, make-up, vfx were top notch. It was pretty clear to me that the intention of the story was to leave you wanting more, and that's exactly what it achieved. Warner Bros. obviously wants to see more and so do I. To each his own I guess, but Ruairi will get my $9. Good for that dude.

I thought it was very good "looking" (titles, colors, sets, vfx) but it wasn't about anything.

I've watched it several times now and it still doesn't really make sense to me.

I totally wish him well though, it doesn't help me for him to make a bad movie, I hope he blows be away. I'd totally hire this guy for effects work though, if i could afford him :)

Yeah, 'cause A Good Year was great - but not as good as White Squall

Why is it that people think there are only 5 people in the world who can direct big movies - Ruairi is a very talented director and will do an amazing job. No matter what good fortune comes someone's way there is always some plum waiting in the wings to say something usless or lob in "their 2 cents". There are other directors besides Scott, Cameron, Spielberg et al. Scott is great but make way for new people.

Well.. That was constructive, and so nicely put.. The link for cinematography.com is....
:)

(Sorry Stephen. But let's face it, you have a tougher audience!)

:) :)

Just an opinion. You can take "plum" and shove it back up where it came from. MHO was based on Alien and BladeRunner. If Ruari can make something at that level, more power to him.
You on the other hand...

awesome rumor, just what i love to hear, a guy works his ass off for years, his own money, mental computer skills, out comes a short with great production, a little web attention, people start calling, time goes by and then suddenly, wham

both the akira people and ruari will benefit from working together
ruari gets pulled into focus by a well known title
akira gets to be produced by somebody that has the patience to go all the way

hope it happens ruari

Lets hope so. I checked imdb, he has 2 animated shorts he directed. That doesn't mean he couldn't do Akira, but do you think he could deal with the large crew needed and huge budget a movie of this magnatude requires?
Give him a chance at a lower budget (< 50mil) scifi and if he does good, then let him do the big ones.
Thats the basis of my misgivings, not that he doesn't have talent or desire.

Hey, I haven't said anything against the look. But in the end, it's the story dude.

I'm an aspiring screenwriter, so believe me, I agree with you. But encompassing a complete story in a feature length screenplay is hard enough, let alone seven minutes. His short was intended to be a visual calling card. I'd say it worked. So would Warner Bros. And CAA. And Independent Talent Group, aka ICM London.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but it makes me wonder what those somewhat dogmatic others could do with seven minutes. :sarcasm:

I think Silent City was a great vfx reel. Could someone point out other work he has directed? Not being dogmatic or insulting, just curious. If he gets it, cool, but if he doesn't, there are lots of other great stories out there. The Manga world is full of them. Maybe we can discuss it without resorting to insults? And if we are talking about giving younger directors a chance, I can think of a few myself. But I'm not going to participate in a flame war.

Guys, the studio will assign a crack 1st AD to hand hold him and watch him through the process. He'll have very little control, and will be watched hourly. It's not like they're giving him the keys to dad's car without a way to keep control of it.

This is done all the time

Jay

RR posts here sometimes, I hope he sees this thread and gets the well-wishes.

Personally, I don't think the world needs a live-action Akira, but I can't begrudge a talented guy for getting his break. Good luck Ruairi! :)

Absolutely. The studios, however, will act in an editing kind of way - Ruairi will have the option (by and large) to shoot scenes how he sees fit - this will be pre-agreed upon (Storyboards etc) - so unless coverage is not giving them options to control it in tonal and content terms later... (in other words, he'll be given the rope to hang himself with but as the film progresses the studio will want flexibility to change it). In short, you can't be John Ford.

The dreaded NRG "screening" with the numbers and how that fares will determine whether or not Ruairi will have control up until the end. If the numbers are low the film is often recontextualised to "up" their percentage. The worrying thing is that this re-tinker usually irons out the more controversial aspects of the film - homogenizes it - to appeal to a wider audience. Other threats to the movies integrity can come in the form of casting (rewrites to support an established actors tastes/ strengths/ current fan expectations etc - add a romance/ the actor wants to play the role trans-sexually/as a comedy/ without pants etc). I, Robot anyone?

Sure it did, and I think he's the right guy for it. Akira is a very visual piece of cake. I'm not in those kind of movies (even though I like it for comics), so story flaws pop in my eyes before anything else. And it does surely look like a professional grade excerpt. Don't get me wrong on this. And you know, on these type of movies and budget, you don't have to be a great director, you must be more sort of a DP and VFX guy in person supported by a bunch of other gifted visual persons, a screenplay which has been overwritten by about five guys before you even read it and you don't have the allowance to alter it anyway, because some harvard graduate producer thinks that's to risky.
