  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RTmotion mk3 wireless follow focus

In the meantime, there is a crude workaround. Since the motor is resistance sensitive during calibration, you can just grab the focus ring when the motor gets to min and max focus and the motor will register where it stopped. Not a perfect solution, but it allows you to use your DSLR lenses while RT Motion tweaks their firmware.

yes, this works too.

Hello !
I just get the Focus Unit from RTmotion and it looks like a well built quality !
The torque and speed are just fine and the response is adjustable.
I will test it in the next days and I will keep you in touch if there is a problem.

Thanks to RTmotion team !

I just received one of my two units. It's a great product.
The menus are well done, simple and efficient. There are a lot 3 user programmable buttons, set initially to brightness, FIZ display, Calibrate.

Two things :
I don't like the auto calibrate when the motor cable is plug. I'm sure it's removable though.
The remote itself is not very confortable, someone should build and sell an Aaton like handgrip to put behind the remote.

Also, RTmotion does not communicate about the two buttons on the left side of the handunit, but there are actually two extra knobs ! So with the one channel remote, you have actually 3 usable channels.
Not ideal because there are no marking, but for zoom, pan, tilt, 3d, it's actually usable.

when the FIZ mm and inch metering will be activated, it will be a hell of a device !

My two motors unit should be shipped soon. Can't wait to try the 3 motors version.

We did some testing with our 2-motor unit and we are very pleased with our system. We only have a problem with our start/stop function. We just received our +1 module and hooked up our RTMotion system. We had to upgrade the system software of the EPIC to 4.0.9, which is beta and required for the +1 module. We managed to start a few times so the settings are ok. Does anyone has the same configuration to test this? It's the first time that we try this functionality, so I don't have any experience with earlier versions.

Thanks,

Willy Faes

Hi, is anyone in NYC with a RTmotion MK3?
I would love to look at it and also potentially rent one with at least 2 motors for 10 days starting this weekend.

Victor, If you find a single channel system, I've got an extra motor from my kit that hasn't sold yet, I'd be happy to rent it, or sell it to you. Let me know!

Hi guys, it's been quite a long while since the last comment on this thread, and I'm still very eager for any further comments any of you might have on the system. I've observed periodic updates to RTMotion's website, which is helpful, but now I'm watching very closely their progress on the firmware. I've starting saving up for a 2-channel system myself, hoping that by the time I have the right cash, the firmware will be in place to feature manual calibration and lens-mapping.

Zoltan I have a 2-channel system arriving Wednesday--lucky me I found someone who wanted to sell theirs. He bought two systems and needs just one.

My jobs free up after next week and I plan on posting everything there is to report on the RT. Timur-style.

Anyone know if you can take a 3 motor system and split it up into a 2 motor and 1 motor system later just by adding another
controller later... or are the motors and controllers individually tied together somehow when they are made.

I think you would need another controler and another reciever if you want it to work wirelessly, plus a couple of cables. If you can to it via cable then I think but you will need to check it can be done direct to motor from controler.

RTMotion's twitter feed says they're demo-ing at IBC that the moment. News is that they've superceded the 3.0 system with 3.1. Their twitter feed photo hints at an improved antenna design among other things. Anyone got any closer looks?

Reportedly 500M wireless from 3.1. Just ordered a second system.

I have a friend who used to have a set of RT Motion follow focus (MK2.5 system + one MK3 motor)
He thinks the RT Motion isn't very responsive and has a little backlash. Because of this reason he ended up selling his RTmotion kit and is considering switching to the new Heden Carat.

Anybody share the same opinion on responsiveness? Does the MK3 version improve on responsiveness? I'm trying to decide between the rtmotion vs Heden Carat.

I can only speak for the Mk3 setup as Ive had zero issues. Even in very cold weather like -25 Celsius. Keep in mind that there are 3 range settings and it can act strange if you are in close range and the setting is set to long range. But I can honestly say it's been rock solid.
