  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RPPs

Just in case anyone is curious, here in Japan (a fully Metric system country) we use Imperial measurements when talking film and lenses. I do think in this case it's Hollywood's influence along with post-WWII Japan's American presence that has caused this.

Helpful to know if you are coming here to shoot and are expecting Metric lenses.

Now, about some example stills from the RPPs.... :)

Paul

I can pull focus by eye (and be sharp) with meters, but not with imperial. A friend AC (and EU too) can't use Metrics even though she's born in EU and use cm/m in everyday's life for more than 25 years now.

so who cares ? they let you choose your marking anyway... choose the sharpest solution for your finger and rent a place who got the lens in marking you want....

Despite the best efforts of the EU I think you'll find Roger Deakins works in Imperial:)

Also, I think you'll find most ACs in Hollywood are US citizens.

Also, I don't think we should degenerate this thread into a 'who has the best DOPs' argument. That is infantile, pointless and frankly very rude.

A most of them are naturalized just because of a work permit (Green Card)...

"Infantile, pointless and frankly very rude"... BUT THERE IS ONE MORE FACT:

Arri/Zeiss Master Primes:

MP-scales.jpg

"Both metric and imperial scales are engraved on a single focus ring which can be easily removed and reversed to switch between feet and meters."

Yea, remembered when everyone went batshit insane after Red said only imperial on their original 300 and 18-50?

I like the term "went batshit insane" now thats funny. Im going to borrow that :)

relative to the thread, I agree with Evin, having them separate is ideal for both distance measurers...

This has been brought up but I have yet to see Red give a reply...

These RPPs are being advertised as worthy to go toe-to-toe with Zeiss UPs & MPs and Cooke S4s, but when you look at those lenses, the width of their witness marks lines up with the width of the same line on the lens barrel, giving accuracy. But on the RPPs, the width of the line and the witness marks has a noticeable mis-match. Now I'm no AC, but isn't this a bad thing that puts it on a "less calibrated" shelf? Or is the width of the line inside of acceptable "fudge factor"?

I think the acceptable 'fudge factor' is about one line width, so if you've got a witness mark 3 times as thick as the marking lines, then the entire with of the witness mark is within one line width of the center (one over, one under).

Not that that makes it perfect, but just a thought.

Boy I sure would like to see some sample footage from the RPP's, whistle whistle whistle sure would be a nice reward for paying a deposit, whistle whistle whistle, sure would be nice to see some new snapshots of them, whistle whistle whistle <ducks>

Dont worry Shawn your not alone, i get this question every day.. it was not a mistake but a design decision.

The lenses are columnated to the center of the mark, and its pretty easy to tell if you are in the center, but the marks are wider as it gives you breathing room on both sides in case of thermal expansion, and other compounding tolerances in the camera system.

This happens no matter what lens you use, and it avoids unnecessarily sending the lenses back for columniation when it's not needed.. its something alot of rental houses have told us is a pain in their ass, and why we started doing it beginning with the 18-85mm.

I'm sure some people will swear at the marks and hate them and bitch to everyone they can about it.. but there is nothing we can do about it.... its like the lenses rotating past infinity. Some people bitch about it, some people demand it.

Hey Mike, why dont you come down to RED and take some? You guys are the professionals... :)

I'll be in LA next week I might take you up on that if i can break away ;)

it's a date. Ill supply the parking lot and primes, you supply whatever you want to shoot, and the popsicles :)

Mike!! Make it happen man! I would love to see what you do with them.

Parking lot? Isn't that where you guys shot the milk girls Jarred? :)

No need to spend money of course.

I paid a visit to RED today and checked out the primes. I'm sure a few people have already heard me say this...I am impressed.
Optical and mechanical build quality are on par with my expectations, but I expected a lot from RED. And they delivered.
You would be foolish to complain about the width of a witness mark. If you don't like the witness mark, spend your $20k on a single Master Prime. Make sense?

I have a junky snapshot from my iPhone, but it's nothing you guys haven't seen and Im not sure if the guys at RED would allow it. Don't wanna step on any toes there.

Heh Jarred,

I'm stopping through LA from Australia on my way to Costa Rica on a shoot for 5 weeks, are the RPP in the shop and ready for any customers to do the same? I have a deposit paid on them and would be very good to check them out first. Might be worth a quick drive from the airport to RED...how far is it by the way?

From LAX about 60~90 min pending traffic, could be 2 hrs on a bad day...

Peter

EDIT: PS - rent a Toyota Prius Hybrid - You will get the access to the "diamond lane", which You can normally access only with 2 or more people in the car. This could cut down the travel time by as much as 30 min in a bad traffic... And NO - You don't have to smell Your own farts... :)
