  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RPPs

yeah agreed on the marks, but mmm that glass. could the next run have more marks? seems simple enough to implement.

No new "runs", these are supposed to be red PRO primes. We cant have Red Actually-these-are-pro-oops-on-the-last-'Pro'-set. Though I agree with needing more marks. Perhaps Red can make a new collar that we can get?

Design flaw... plain and simple.

That's what your mom said...

heh heh heh. sorry couldn't resist.

Listen guys... everyone wants more more more.. more this more that.. I want this different, I want that different. We already are giving you some of the best glass out there for a price that is hard to beat... Glass that beats most other lenses out there that charge almost as much for a single lens as we charge you for an entire set. Put that in perspective before you start throwing out things like "design flaw" and other half-baked statements.

Shawn, that's an interesting idea. Not so easy to do as each mark needs to be calibrated, but it's an interesting idea.

As always.. thanks for the feedback.

Jared, all what people are trying to say is that all the parameters are out there, available to see, learn and apply. Nothing is new. The RPP could have been better, even if this better is with only two more distance marks.
No one expect it to be like the new Leicas in which the cost of one lens is like the all RPP set.
The RPP are fine optics, so far, it is the housing which could be improved.

RPP Shims?

RPP Shims?

Hi,

Does anyone know where (or if) I can get shims for RPP's? I've asked my bomb-squad, and he said they don't have shims for sale, which I want some explanation for. Not that I don't like the RPP's. I love them, but it's just my set are off by like a few hairs. All five lenses by the same distance. My camera guy quadruple-checked them. I wonder if I can get them made anywhere. I'd like to avoid sending my set over to Red HQ.

Thanks for your help in advance.

No one's arguing that the value is not there with the RPP set, I've tested them brutally and optically they hang with S4's and Ultraprimes. I appreciate that you guys hear lots of feedback....

One thing to remember when you go to your lens tech and he thinks the lenses are all slightly off - check that they've been correctly marked for best contrast, which on my RPP's is slightly different than best resolution. The MX sensor can only use resolution up to a certain point - It's like a mesh window screen, once you surpass that resolution number, micro-contrast is more important. - you want a full "signal" at each pixel and no spill over to it's neighbors.

This of course will rarely bother you in the real world... way too many other variables. Just something to remember @ the lens projector and collimator.

Thanks, Matt. I'm by no means a lens expert or even a tech. My camera tech is not an expert on lenses neither. So I will have this note ready when I go to my lens person in the future which I'm looking for.

This is why I like this little(?) online space. I ask for something and get tons of information by other users in minutes. Love this community.

Cheers,

White marking pens and or tape work great... and Ill take the delicious glass with less marks than Id like sometimes, over more witness marks and inferior glass,... any day of the week.

Now forget the new marking ring and please make a LEICA size/spec set for $60K and call them RED MASTER PRIMES :) Thats an even better idea, yes?

Jim, Jarred,
Can we please see this on in FullRes 4K ?????

It's REALLY EASY to add marks to any lens that has space for them, as has been said on this thread. It's even easier to do this if you use a fabulously sharp 4k camera and large, sharp monitor - and simple tape measure - as your guide.

It was much harder to do this when we only had roughened glass as a focussing device (the ground glasses in film cameras). Our collimators only worked at infinity.

The best ACs do this all the time. They even remark lenses that have existing marks that are off just a little.

Yes it is not that difficult to add new Markings to the RPP's, but it is not for every one to do, and it should be done by a professional and respected shop, like our very own Duclos, we were in fact discussing this at Vegas Red Day, with him and MArk and the guys at OffHollywood.

I Love the New Leica Glass, and will possibly end up doing the crazy buy, as they are all I ever wanted form Glass, especially a silly but extremely important to me is the matching size, weight and front element screw o ring of 95mm , expensive but widely available Filters, IQ is off course at par, as well as build and off course the here discusses markings which are perfectly distributed, but guess what??

DID I MENTIONED CRAZY BUY????

Yeah each of this lenses are almost "6" times the price of one of the RPP's.

So as I said many, many times, from the beginning, and after tests with various S3D rigs, the most demanding test mind you, were not only build and or markings are important, but IQ and ease of matching sets IS, we have found the RPP's extremely well done, and great al along, especially when considering their price point, then they become a true accomplishment and marvel of a piece of glass.

If and when RED has the time and will to make a set for more money, say..uhm 10k per lens, well, then I can only imagine what they will come up with!!
