  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RPPs

Ok... Call me old school but now that the Red Primes are in the Red store how about a few hundred images taken with these lenses. Projectors only tell us so much. The RED lens event at NAB will be a huge success, but how do they look in real world use? What's the quality of the focus pulls... yata yata... post some images and some clips please.

If You are coming to the party this afternoon You should be able to see plenty. If not - I am sure they will post some right after...

:) Peter

It seems that they were headed towards a good discount then backed off. Maybe, I really wanted this set at $15995

Shawn, Get the whole set for $19k and I will get the 100mm from you for $3005.

Shawn,

It seems that was more of wishful thinking on your side than anything concrete what led you to those numbers. $19K is still a 10% discount, AND you get the set for $18K since you bought a 300mm lens. How much better than that can it REALISTICALLY get? That is an amazing price in this economy, regardless of whether some of us can afford it right away or not or how badly we may want those lenses. It is what it is and all you can do is roll with it.

Wow Shawn, from where in God's earth did you get this hope?

I promise you a lot of work and pain and SERIOUS haggleing went into getting the lenses to these prices. Don't think your post does not really dissappoint the people who tried to hard to get the lenses this discounted.

Only 100 lines/mm in center?

I expected more then 200 lines/mm.

It is line pairs, not lines! Which S35 lens that you know of resolves 200 lp/mm with at least 10% MTF? :ciappa:

100 lp/mm is very respectable. Very few still and cine lenses can achieve this.

I think it was a tongue in cheek comment....kinda like wish it was $16k

If we own more than one camera with vastly diff serial numbers can we order two sets and get them at the same time? Ex. I have #40 and a couple others in the hundreds. If i order 2 or 3 sets will I get them all at once?

I think you're right. Sorry, I had a hard day today. Damn, it's nearly midnight and I have sunrise start tomorrow. G'night

16K thats too much. Red should give these lenses away for free, or at most charge $10 and some bellybutton lint

So let me get this straight, Red isn't throwing in a free Red One with these lenses? What a rip-off!

You know, snobbery runs deep in these circles, and there's a certain danger in underpricing stuff like this, even if its superior quality can me proven. People seem to suffer from a "purchaser's masochism" that stems from being conditioned to believe that everything a well known Brand Name puts out will always be better and will garner more respect than other brands. People also often feel that the higher the price, the better the quality. I know from experience that "you get what you pay for" is not always true, but ridiculously underpricing stuff can give that impression.

Thanks everyone for the awesome constructive comments! Youve made me see the light! What was I smoking when Jim announced a new discount and I thought it'd be 20%? What a silly boy was I to not expect 5%!

It's interesting, I experienced this here on the Reduser.net board trying to convince someone not to pay for California Sunbounce reflectors when Photoflex ones were just as good at like 1/5 the price. I might as well have written "more expensive doesn't necessarily equal better" in cuneiform for all they could comprehend it.

If you made that argument to a still photographer on dpreview.com, they'd be like "Great, but do you know of anything even cheaper than the Photoflex?"

I guess that perspective on reality is what comes from working on movie sets where you spend more money hiring guys to hold reflectors than still photographers spend on their camera and lenses?
