  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RPAs...

guys - you just crop the extra pixels. what is so hard to understand about this?

Then it only make sens if it's x2 and a front element in order to have those ana artifacts.

WOW

Would you guys please stop pulling money out of my pocket?

a set of glass I'll buy. just watch Transformers and you will never want to shoot without them again.

This is exciting ! Like everyone here I'd love to hear some details - Front, Rear? 2x? 1.33?

I Hope they end up being more in the zone of E series ( but with better close focus ) than huge and soulless Primo's.

Tonight we are announcing the development of the RPAs (RED Pro Anamorphics). They will match color, optical quality and mechanical performance characteristics with their little brothers... the RPPs. The weight of the RPAs is expected to be within 1/2 pound of the RPPs.

Initial set will consist of:

35mm T2.4
50mm T2.4
85mm T2.4
100mm T2.4

A 25mm T2.4 is also being studied.

Delivery of the 4 lens set is expected by year's end... although you know the schedule drill.

Prices will be slightly higher than RPPs.

If you wanted to use the entire sensor for the 2.40 image, the FF35 Monstro sensor would need an anamorphic lens with a 1.6X squeeze to fit 2.40 onto the 1.50 sensor, and it would need to cover 36 x 24mm.

For the 2:1 MX sensor, you need a 1.2X squeeze to fill the sensor with a 2.40 image and it would need to cover 30 x 15mm.

For the 16:9 Red One / Super-35 sensor, you'd need a 1.34X squeeze to fill the sensor with a 2.40 image.

Absolutely fantastic "anamorphic" world of RED1MX....

Technolust, more specs and $!!!!

"slightly higher" = 25K?

If the new announced lenses are just x1.3 then they will almost look spherical (x1.3 does not introduce the characteristics of the anamorphic lenses that we are all expecting). If they are x2, then we are going to need longer lenses. A 100mm is just too short. We´d need at least to get to the 200mm range in order to have a small lens set.

I know a lot of people believe this, but if you look at old 5-perf 65mm Ultra Panavision movies shot with 1.25X anamorphic lenses, you can see squeezed backgrounds and horizontal flares. Same goes for old 8-perf 35mm Technirama movies shot with 1.5X anamorphic lenses. I've posted frames from "The Battle of the Bulge" and "El Cid" that show this.

It's just that the distortion is not quite as extreme as with 2X anamorphics. On the other hand, the distortions increase as you open up the lens aperture, so I wouldn't be surprised if a 1.33X anamorphic lens shot at T/2.0, for example, had similar distortions to a 2X anamorphic lens shot at T/2.8. Though the shape of the out-of-focus ovals may never get as skinny on the 1.3X lens.

Anyway, it would be easy enough to test a 1.33X Hawk lens against a 2X Hawk lens to compare the level of anamorphic distortions.

Jim,

Why not two anamorphic zooms similar to the Pro 18-85 and a new Pro 50-150 Anamorphic zoom. Everyone will shoot the format from home movies to feature films... Nothing like a day at the beach shot in Red CinemaScope (for lack of a better term).

I think this is great and also very interesting. Nice to see more options for anamorphic glass!

I will say that the reason most people will want to shoot anamorphic lenses is for the optical characteristics. So I'm very interested to see what sort of images these lenses can create. When shooting a 2:1 sensor that is already 5K, anamorphic lenses are not going to provide us with any resolution benefit. However, I'm with Gavin on his statements above about FF35. These lenses only need to cover somewhere in the S35 / 5K range. But their true benefits can be realized on a sensor like the FF35 Monstro. That would allow increased height to be recorded and would provide a resolution benefit.

I could just see those two zooms becoming enormous. Maybe not Optimo 24-290 size, but getting close. It'd make them challenging to use on Steadicam, handheld, and a lot of smaller jibs.

makes one think we might have a potential "delivery hint" here as its been awfully quiet on the Monstro front... ;)

But their true benefits can be realized on a sensor like the FF35 Monstro. That would allow increased height to be recorded and would provide a resolution benefit.

If the 2X anamorphic lens covered the height of the FF35 Monstro sensor, then the area used for a 2.40 image would be 29mm x 24mm, compared to cropping the sensor vertically and using spherical lenses, which would be 36mm x 15mm to get 2.40.

That's 696 square millimeters for the 2.40 anamorphic version and 540 square millimeters for the 2.40 spherical version. So yes, some improvement in resolution, mainly because the sensor is squarer than a 16x9 sensor (1.50 : 1 instead of 1.78 : 1.) The closer the sensor is to 4x3, the more 2X anamorphics make sense over cropping to get 2.40.

Personally, I think that a good compromise would be a 1.5X squeeze (I know that Joe Dunton had similar thoughts if he were going to make anamorphics for digital cine cameras.) That would give you enough optical distortions to please people who liked that, but use a bit more of these wide sensors. Even a 1.33X squeeze lens could probably be designed with enough optical "defects" to please fans of anamorphic...

Completely ignorant question here. And I assume it's impossible because A) nobody to my knowledg is doing it and B) all statements that begin with "Ignorant question" are almost always stupid. :D but ... waterhouse stops on the front of lenses can sculpt the bokeh. Wouldn't it be possible to develop a lens which is 1.3x or 1.5x squeeze but boost it with a slightly oval aperture? I assume it would increase vignetting and wreak havoc with the properties of the lens but if one were targeting a 5k 4perf anamorphic sized gate then you wouldn't need the full FF35 coverage and could lose some coverage.
