Hi all,

Has anyone here rotated their RED camera body for Instagram vertical stories?

I have a project coming up where this will be one of the main deliverables & will have to compose some shots specifically for this vertical aspect ratio.

Should I rotate the camera for these shots?
Or should I not rotate the camera & just create a 1080 wide x 1920 high frame guide?

I'm wondering what some of the wider lenses (wont go wider than 24mm on a Gemini) will look like when the camera is rotated?

Would be great to hear from anyone who has done this.

It's certainly becoming a more common shooting experience.

If you find yourself doing a lot of this work I would suggest any of the various cage options that feature "side ribs" or a larger side cheese plate.

After you have that it's pretty easy to attached a quick release or dovetail to that.

Red has the R90, but I think most people just use a cage and mount a tripod/bridge plate to it (since it’s cheaper and does the same thing.)

I've had to take both approaches. There's a lot of "we'll decide later" and it's hard explaining how that affects our coverage....but I've done lots of 6k with a vertical 9x16 cut and people find it works well. Can't convince them to go 8k and they're happy with 6k at a lower compression.

My tip is to make a user button take you right to your frame guide options. I find it helpful to shade out anything that isn't 9x16 just to make sure I know what we're capturing exactly. Clients have a tendency to see out the sides of the guide and think it's still "in" for their 9x16.

I've shot a few commercials with the camera vertical last year. On top of that they wanted it handheld.
I have a WC top and bottom plate, with a nato rail that I moved over to the right side of the camera (looking down on it). Then I moved the top handle over to the side and hung the whole rig from my Easyrig. Extended the monitor with a Noga arm. Worked well, but framing that way is hard to get used to.

Here is from the xmas campaign for a Mobile operator.
