  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ronin S + RED Monstro 8K

I love and have the Otus. But for this gimbal, a Leica M summilux would be close in quality and only weight a 5th as much and be much easier on the arms.

Perhaps if there was demonstrable interest from RU - DJI would widen there offerings to makes something DSMC2 friendly?

DJI Wishlist

+) Options of using Carbon Fibre or Magnesium to offset the weight of stronger motors

+) Coupling option in the handle so that can be attached to different types of Body harnesses.

+) To help more the industry forward : Low latency AR Glasses that project a 2K image of the what the camera can see -> wirelessly transmited and overlay onto (minimum) an eye.

Surely there has to be market for this for DRONEs too (ie vested interest for DJI)?

Something like a deal with Vizux Blade in which DJI can output HDMI from the Base Expander -> 802.11ax transmitter - - - Receiver -> Glasses.

(Taking the (heavy) display off the rig seems like a move in the right direction).

Hard not to really miss the built-in RCP and FIZ control on Movi Pro, not to mention camera power. Super Red-friendly design...

My DSMC2 Gemini with Jetpack expander, canon aluminum mount, and rodclaw with small 15mm carbon rod weighs 4.7lbs without a lens. With a Sigma Art 50mm 1.4 it weighs 6.8lbs. With Sigma Art 30mm it is 5.9lbs. Rodclaw and small rod are about 0.2lbs and rod if you aren't worried about pulling focus remotely. Really just a matter of figuring out a good powering and display solution, but plenty of options out there. The Red 4.7" display weights 0.5lbs. 7" weighs 1.2lbs. If you are careful and depending on how your are shooting and holding the gimbal you could definitely get away with running the 4.7" display right on top of the camera.

Would definitely be awesome to see DJI make something in between the Ronin-S and Ronin 2 though. Or a dedicated Red kit for the Ronin-S maybe? Would be great to see them offer different mounting solutions for this gimbal, the single vertical handle is just always a bit awkward for any reasonable camera size even a DSLR. Would be amazing if they packaged a display and battery solution all together.

As someone else had mentioned, I am curious to see if you could run it upside down or if the camera might be just a bit too large for that. And all that said if I bought a Ronin-S my GH5S would be going on it not the Gemini.

omg this is the worst "build up" video ive seen. So much hype for so little and the dramatic music of putting a camera onto a gimbal :D

i think putting the Red onto this kills the point of portability and lightweight. It will help in some situations but bigger and stronger motors means better stabilisation as well. And holding this with one arm or two arms like this wont help a lot with your arms not getting tired.

I pre-ordered two of these but will mostly mount smaller cameras on there to really be light. Movi Pro will be my main weapon for red cameras when i need the big guns as the ring and top handle,... are still needed

The music just does not match what they are doing or the quality of footage they shot at all haha.

I've bought one. Tried it in situations. My setup was Monstro+ 7" on top, redvolt XL on the back. the motors cannot support tilts, but can pan and keep the camera stabilised at eye level. There is definitely strain on the motors.

I don't know how to individually tune them yet on the advanced settings part. perfect balancing is almost impossible, but the motors do work to keep it stabilised. Getting a bit of the "first person shooter walking effect".

I used the Canon 24 1.4, the Tokina 11-16 2.8 (zoomed at 16 as a prime) and the sigma 35mm Art with it.

I love the form factor. I had it on a backpack and set it up on the ronin in 1 or 2 minutes. Removed it, connected back the outrigger handle in 4 minutes and changed to handheld and tripod quickly. For guerrilla, its an incredible tool.

The motors just need to be stronger. The form factor is fantastic for Red cameras.

That sounds quiet good. Do you have the outrigger or the sidehandle? I have the sidehandle and switching from gimbal to handheld is a pain.

This setup is sort the same concept as the Letus35 Helix Jr. which I've worked with before works pretty great. it's underslung gimbal and it can hold a 12lbs payload.. I saw it with an Epic Dragon on it, no problem.. It's very compact and travels very really well. also the right handle can control tilt.. I'm curious to see what the Ronin-S would cost with all the accessories you need and how it compares to the Letus35 Helix Jr.

I have both but tend to use the outrigger 95% of the time. I tried this with the outrigger.

I tried the RONIN S yesterday with my RED Raven, the v-lock expander, the small redvolt-V and the canon 24 pancake 2.8. The center of gravity it's too high to calibrate the TILT axe. I put a 150gr counterweight and it was perfect, then I put the monitor on top of the camera and it became a little bit trickier, It's unbalanced but if I turn the gimbal ON it works like magic ah, I just don't want to stress the motors! I'll try with more counterweights. If the tilt arm was a little bit longeeeeerrrrrrr. :undecided:

Guys, I'm really interested in making this work somehow. I posted about lens recommendations earlier and may bite the bullet and get an EF VV mount so I can get a pancake of some type. That, along with an external SDI monitor out and a belt buckle vmount connection may get the weight off of the camera. Anyone seen people do this yet and have luck with the calibration? Basically, I'm trying to find the least motor strain with the monstro on the Ronin-S.

I don't know why they thought it was a good idea to shoot the whole thing at F1.2. I had to stop watching because it was too distracting trying to keep up with the focus. -__-

haha. 1.4 you mean, but yea everything was out of focus. brutal. and only 1080p for a 8k cam.. sad day.

The setup i tried which allowed just a little bit of tilt was with the battery belt, a tokina 11-16 and with the 7”. Every bit of weight loss counts, so I imagine the 4” to be a better solution for this. Not perfect balance but works.

With the 7" monitor mounted on the camera? I was going to mount a monitor off of the camera and control the settings remotely or via the sidekick. I'm thinking that'll shave off some more.

I weighed out the rig at 7.1lbs. That's within the weight limit, but I'm not sure about the CG. So, I'm wondering if anyone has tried this.

I tried with the Battery Belt and Jet pack, but the Battery Belt cable is too heavy and make the Ronin to loose all balance. I'm curious how do you deal with that

I’m currently on vacation but in two weeks if you guys want might post a video about how I do it. Like I said, very limited tilt on my setting but works for many simple shots. Here’s a video we dis with many Ronin S shots on Red Monstro, done a couple weeks ago.
