  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ronin S + RED Monstro 8K

Yep it works and is pretty reasonable. It's stated max payload is 8lbs, but you can squeeze more out of it for sure.

I really like this particular design, sort of wish there was/is an S+ model with an extra 4-6lbs and more extension arm options, but I imagine this will come in time.
 
I need this man. Are they going to release a dual handle setup that's actually not just two ronin-s handles rigged up? That'd be nice.
 
omg this is the worst "build up" video ive seen. So much hype for so little and the dramatic music of putting a camera onto a gimbal :D

i think putting the Red onto this kills the point of portability and lightweight. It will help in some situations but bigger and stronger motors means better stabilisation as well. And holding this with one arm or two arms like this wont help a lot with your arms not getting tired.

I pre-ordered two of these but will mostly mount smaller cameras on there to really be light. Movi Pro will be my main weapon for red cameras when i need the big guns as the ring and top handle,... are still needed
 
Im not sure I like Ronin S or not since it looks heavy for one hand. Now in this video they had a two hand grip wich is better for larger cameras. I do think the ronin s looks great if Dji could set it up with there x7 camera. One good thing is that you get the camera higher and can keep the hands lower, but at the same time that can put more stress on the arms as you have the weight further up. Aslo you can keep the ronin s closer to your body wich is mostly good. But in this film I think the monitor got to close to the body.

My hope is that we se a beefed up version with dual arms holding the camera with a bar holding the camera at the top. Than I hope they make the "tripod" longer and make a steadicam vest to attach it to.
I have seen videos and images of similar with steadicam vest and boom + gimbal but did not find it right now.



Maby its would get to clunky and this kind of things should be kept small like this thing.

I think this is awesome and i am sorely tempted, but as Phil says i feel that a slightly stronger motor and more room is essential but the form factor is really interesting.

Not so much just handholding like the video, but putting it on top of a monopod for levelling or even running as a motion control head on a tripod via the software.

My concern is that balancing is going to be very difficult with a decent lens on, because i'm not sure you can get the body back far enough physically. Perry Ho on fb has put an alexa mini on one, with around 5kg total. So there is more capacity but at the same time i feel that motors on these things need to have *plenty* of headroom to work properly.

Also what no one has shown is whether it can be underslung with this weight (easy rig style) or whether i can be held horizontally either. If you look at the normal DSLR rigs on this then you can see some pretty cool moves which mean holding the S in quite different ways than that two handled upright. But a concern would be holding the camera securely for this.

If DJI are reading then i think a strong motor, few more mounting options and there would be a winner here. See i would not buy a Ronin2 or Movi Pro for my work, i don't think i would use it enough - but i would happily buy something in the S region for the occasional use and also it's a lot more compact which is important to me

I don't know why they thought it was a good idea to shoot the whole thing at F1.2. I had to stop watching because it was too distracting trying to keep up with the focus. -__-

Phil, that may be their S2 iteration perhaps
 
This is nice, but I see this more as a proof of concept. I mean, it works and it can be used (as seen in the video, though only showing slowmo), but it makes less sense (for Red cameras) to use it in a shooting if you know before hand that you will need a gimbal. Because then you will rent a proper gimbal, for your camera setup, with proper operator and support.
But as a hack, during a shooting that wasn't planned a gimbal use, it can work.

BTW for the price I'll grab one I think. But how long will the motors hold up using at max or +max weight. Also, wouldn't it be better to do the upside down thing? Since Red cameras are taller than others...

Now for the lighter cameras setups it seems really nice.

Anyone willing to compare it against the new Tilta G2x?

Interresting that they use it backwards with bigger cameras. Makes sense because than there is more space to tilt up and down. I have a ronin s in preorder. I hope it arrives soon and I can test it out with our helium.
 
Want to share my experience with Ronin-S.

I Tried the Ronin-S with my DSMC1- Epic MX (Just the Brain + AL Nikon Mount and Zeiss Milvus 35mm Lens) and it was able to hold up for simple movements/pans/tilts.
However, kind of felt the Motor vibrations in the footage if i do any crazy/fast/Whip moves (Adjusted the In app settings for PAN/TILT/Roll motors, I may have to tweak it better)... May be my setup is a bit heavy (Epic MX- 5Lbs). There shouldn't be any issues if you mount DSMC2 Bodies on it (3.35 Lbs)

The effort in balancing is easier than Ronin 1/M.
However mounting Battery/Monitor is all a custom solution. Hoping that DJI would start selling those accessories... Or As Phil mentioned they shall release a S+ version.

I felt Its good for Events/Run&Gun/One man army situations.
 
Uday: That's great to hear! Do you have any footage of your setup?

I really want to just order the Ronin S but I also think an S+ is likely to happen. Gimbal-upgrade-itis is as bad as Camera-upgrade-itis.
