  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ronin M ???? Need Help

I googled 'ronin m dimensions' and clicked the top result which was DJI's own page.

It says the camera tray max width is 160mm. That translates to 6.3 in. I'm sure you know the dimensions of your camera.

That said, most people would go with a Ronin M to save weight? I use mine with a small Canon XC10 (which is an excellent combo for handheld) and with my 1Dc and 1Dx mkII. The larger bodies, even if they are handholdable initially in a Ronin M, will get heavy pretty quick when doing actual work that demands precision positioning.

I'd expect you to need at least an EasyRig or something similar to work properly with a RED. And if you're not going strictly handheld—still want the smaller gimbal? Just thinking out loud...

I'm happy with my Ronin M and would recommend it. I try to make sure to not depend on customer support though.

i used Ronin M with my dragon for a year but not with a side handle.
Best way is to just use the Red Touch, and order a 24" (or longer) LCD cable. 3rd party is cheaper. I have a Wooden Camera

Also order a long Dtap to RED power cable to put your Vmount battery in a backpack while you operate.

I used the Ronin-m with my scarlet-w and the extensions, I could only use it with light lenses, I had issues with canon cine lens

The M is not really built for red cameras. One could argue that even the regular ronin is a bit of a struggle when adding filter, focus motors etc, on the M even more so. Sure you can get a red camera on there and balance it but then you are on small lenses lightweight filters and pretty much nothing on camera. A scenario that possibly work for the hobbyist but in a world where DP´s and directors and such want to use any lens, add zoom motor, and a lot of other stuff the M is not that suitable. I say definitely try one out before you buy it. Most are a bit surprised how quickly the big ronin runs into size / weight issues and you then have to start add counter weights, special dovetails etc.

I think its limitations are a plus point, you are forced to use less, strip the camera down to the minimum, in the end you have a light package, you can hold it for more than 3 minutes. I have follow focus, wireless video, wifi adapter and an 16mm ultra prime, zipp box filter holder and don't feel I need much more or more importantly thats the limit, the limit I am happy to carry. (i am talking about the mx but they seem similar) Powering everything from the on board batteries. If you want more weight just get a movi pro, (and a grizzly hulk operator)
