  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rolling Shutter increase on new firmware?

Yes.

Open the R3D of that clip you had before. Look at the metadata feild and the build number will be in the metadata of the clip. That way you can get the exact FM the clip was shot on. Then you should just double check in the release notes of the build you currently have installed to which build you can roll back too.

I just went through the "upgrade down" process. You have to use the latest build of the last 2nd decimal build. Meaning, to downgrade from 6.2.xx you have to use the highest 6.1.xx. I tried to downgrade from 6.2.57 to 6.2.51 and that does not work. You have to roll back to the lates 6.1.xx whatever that one is. I'm out of town and don't have the numbers in front of me...

Basic stuff. Right on RED.com The old google is a wonderful tool.

  • You cannot downgrade an EPIC MYSTERIUM-X to earlier than v5.3.49, v6.0.44 or v6.2.25 after upgrading to v6.2.57.
  • You cannot downgrade an SCARLET MYSTERIUM-X to earlier than v5.3.49, v6.0.44 or v6.2.25 after upgrading to v6.2.57.
  • You cannot downgrade an EPIC or SCARLET DRAGON to earlier than v5.3.49, v6.0.44 or v6.2.25 after upgrading to v6.2.57.
  • You cannot downgrade a WEAPON CF to earlier than v6.1.50 or v6.2.57 after upgrading to v6.2.57.
  • You cannot downgrade a WEAPON MG, SCARLET-W or RED RAVEN to earlier than v6.2.57 after upgrading to v6.2.57.
  • You must upgrade your REDMOTE firmware to v9.5.×. Download the firmware upgrade from red.com/downloads.
  • Refer to the RED DSMC Operation Guide, available at red.com/downloads, for REDMOTE upgrade instructions.
  • Preset files created only on v4.0.x or later are compatible with v6.2.57.
  • It can take the camera up to 8.5 minutes to update firmware for the RED Touch 7" LCD. The LCD displays a progress screen during the update. If your camera loses power during the update, turn your camera back on. The LCD upgrade restarts. During the upgrade, the LCD is blank and the PWR/REC LEDs flash green.

Well, that means I cannot downgrade my Weapon MG so I can't compare or figure this thing out.

So,

I guess it's a call out to the community to ask if someone can replicate this with a 50mm on their Weapon. :)

PasS: HDR

What is the settings here, what HDRx setting and what frame rate and what magic motion blend setting?

This was the 50 fps, HDRx 6 stops, simple blend and post pixel blur. But as said, it's the only clip with a pan speed comparable for checking the RT on my old build. If someone has the old build it would be nice to have some 50mm pans in the same speed as the R3D I linked to in order to compare since I can't revert to earlier firmware than the latest.

So if thats a 50fps HDRx 6 stops..... You understand that is equal to something very little in shutter angle.

Basically you compare 3 degree shutter with 180 degree shutter. There will be a huge difference.

To get the same rolling shutte issues per frame you would need to pan about 64 times faster..... to get the same result in your HDRx frame. So not the best clips to compare.

You rolling shutter is as should be.

Why not do apple to Apple and match the settings of the HDR shot on the new FW build?

Yes, but 6 stop HDRx @ 180 deg 50fps gives you an X track that has about the same exposure time as if you shot 1.15 deg shutter in 25p... (not 115 deg but one point one five..) So yes rolling shutter will be different, extremely different. like 150 times different. I think thats what we see here and not so much the build having a different roll of the shutter.

But what I am saying is that it appears Christoffer is operating on a hunch. If he can replicate on the new FW what he did on the old FW the maybe it's the same. Do you get what I mean? It's all a guess and a bit backward.

what you need is one on old, one on new, side by side.

I will

A 50mm prime could be drastically different than the sigma 50-100 at 50 for instance - that lens generates a tremendous amount more visible Rs because of the optical design axis. Some one smarter than I could probably explain
