  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rokinon Lens Kits

I have 14, 24, 35, 85. Those shoots were 90 percent 24 and 35 at a 2.8-4 on the stop

Nice, Im loving the 85mm when it comes to live concert shooting.

How do you find the 14mm at 3.1?

Looking at the 10mm and wondering if its worth it.

I like the 14 but really need to be at a 4 for it to look great. I do like that it covers full frame so that your shooting though the dead center of the glass but it has its quirks. Flares really interesting. Certain things it's great for. Others it just feels too modern of a flare. Have to use ND gel on the back if you have to ND outside which is a serious ass pain. Overall the cost considered its a solid lens and it for sure comes in handy even if I have to push a half stop sometimes for interiors

Thanks Ryan for the tip :)

@Eric: What do you mean by "ND gel on the back"? Can't you use normal ND filters in front of the lens? I think I'm missing something ;)

That would be Ryan actually ;)

I think the 14mm has a permanent lens hood attached therefore not making it possible to use filters . I've seen someone shave/cut down the lens hood though to put filters on. Stupid move by Rokinon IMO.

Correct there is a permanent lens hood with no threads for filters.

I am sold so far thanks for all the input guys! Looks like a definite worthy investment for entry level glass! I also read a good article on the Duclos Blog that goes into detail about the new DS series.

...the Rokinon Cine-DS line. The “DS” in the new version stands for “Dual Scale” which means there is a smart and dumb side scale for operating the lens from either side of the camera, instead of the top side position that the other versions offered. The focus and iris gear positions have been moved along the axis in order to maintain a consistent position from lens to lens making swapping a breeze when using a follow focus or motors. Additionally, each of the Cine-DS lenses is carefully color matched to a certain degree in order to sustain a specific cinematic look throughout the set. The optics remain the same throughout all of the different versions so don’t expect any sort of increase in image quality from one option to the other. Do expect a price difference between the three series with the plain photo version being the lowest, and the new Cine-DS line being the highest. Rokinon will phase out the middle class Cine line (non-DS) in favor of the new Cine-DS over the course of 2015

I had the set as my EF glass option since they came out as cine model. They have their own look, you generally want to shoot then at a 2 as your wide open, but you can get sharp images from wide open. The plastic housing is the biggest downside of the glass, but put some filtration in front of the glass and it really has a nice look. I mostly use my PL glass but when a job calls for EF glass they are my first choice to use as to me I can get kind of a poor mans cooke feel from them.
Here's a example of Rokinons where I used the 24mm, 35mm and 85mm at a 2.8 with a 1/2 classic black frost.

What setup do you have to add filters to these lenses? This looks great!

Jerrod, do they offer a kit or did you order individually? I was looking on there for the whole package but could not find the DS version.

Wait isnt the DS from Duclos?

The Rokinon RAW from Duclos have the coating removed for extra special flaring. Haven't heard anything about them since they announce they were doing them ....some eons ago. I guess getting them all to flare the same way is proving more difficult than expected.

Any rental house can remove the coating from a set of lenses... e.g. cooke s4i minis uncoated

They're for flares, you can shoot a beam of light into the barrel. creating a soft light on the interior optics.

I'd suggest going with the Duclos kit. Great company. Contact them and I'm sure they'll answer all your questions.
I don't get why one need to get them from Duclos, when this lenses in B&H and Adorama ??

I have the 35mm. It has it's own look, which felt very "cine" on my Canon 5DMII. I now have a scarlet dragon and am finding this to be my least used lens with it. I believe it's not quite "coke bottle" on the dragon, but it is not very pristine.

I just purchased a set from Duclos and, while they're not Zeiss/Cooke quality, they definitely hold up against the Canon or Nikon still lenses. For the price, you can't beat them.
I'm planning on having the coating removed.

Sergei, when you purchase them from Duclos, they give you a 2-year service warranty so it's worth it in my opinion.

Cheers,

Nobody needs to get them from Duclos.... You can buy the Cine DS lenses anywhere. Hell, I think even Office Max sells Rokinon lenses these days. But if you're going to fork over your hard earned pennies for a Rokinon Cine DS lens, why not get it from someone who actually cares about your work and the quality of a lens? The big-box stores don't give a shit about lens sales. They want you to buy filters and memory cards that they're making 100% profit on. Call any of those larger chains and ask them if they can tell you what the image circle required for Red Dragon is. They won't even know what you're talking about. :prrr:
