  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rokinon Cine lenses are here!!

I also have noticed weird stuff on my 35mm cine version. Nothing too bad so far, but sometimes, for a second there, when I turn the iris ring nothing happens (aka it doesnt close). It has only happened a few times so far, so... hopefully it'll stay that way! I love that lens otherwise.

My 24mm cine version is also here, and it is SIGNIFICANTLY softer than the 35. I mean, it makes sense, but, has anyone else can confirm this in their experience?

Sounds like a link is loose in the iris control of your 35mm. It might come completely off and you won't have any control of the iris. My 24mm is razor sharp. Appears that you were unlucky and got a couple of bad copies. Might check into exchanging them.

Yea that sounds right. I have been shooting with it for a while so unfortunately not sure how much I can do... one of the cons of these is of course their build!

Humm regarding the 24, i tested a few at the store, it seemed to me it was just a quality of the lens itself. I am not saying it is unusable, it is still sharper than other lenses I own, i am saying it is definitely softer than the 35mm...

I shot some 1K 350fps the other day with the 24 and 35. I noticed a bit of CA (but I was shooting almost wide open) in some highlights. Not too bad though.

Big time over here too. Waaay softer than the 35mm and the 85mm wide open, and a huge amount of CA to deal with.

I'm not sure how Rokinon covers soft lenses under warranty... as I'm not sure if you and I got a bad batch and there are sharper 24's out there, but I'm not satisfied either way.

I guess I should wait on buying the whole Cine set or is this just happening with the reg lenses?

I need some advice about the 24mm T 1.5 rokinon cine lens.. buy it or don't? (I already have the 35 T1.5 and I love it.)
I read some test that talk about this lens not so good at... a bit soft. how is a bit soft???
still a top lens to use with a red one or not worth to buy?
thank you

I used it on a tv production, but we recorded the footage straight to a Samurai recorder for quick turnaround so I haven't seen the footage in redcinex yet. The result looked good when broadcasted in HD, but I couldn't compare it to the 35mm as I only used the 24mm on this job. I shot at T2/T2.8.
My 24mm seems to be ok, but I haven't had the time to do any proper testing just yet

Am I the only one who has had significant issues with CA and general discoloring issues? I own the 85mm but rarely use it because the colors look flat and and off to me, and CA seems to be lurking everywhere. I didn't notice quite so many issues with the 14mm, but then again the distortion makes it unusable imo.

Maybe it's just my imagination but ever since I purchased this lens over the Summer I feel kinda tricked into just going off sharpness (thedigitalpicture.com comparisons were what did it for me). I don't own any Zeiss lenses, but I think the differences between the two (in my experiences at least) go significantly deeper than just their comparable sharpness'. I've actually gone out of my way to recognize the coloring and CA of lenses I shoot with now since I purchased this, but again, I'd love to be dissuaded otherwise and told that I'm wrong so I could go ahead and confidently purchase the 35 and 24 roki cines...

I´m still waiting for my 85mm cine version. B&H says it will probably ship in December. I will have a close look at it then. I get some time off next week and will test the 24 and 35 and look for what you are seeing

My 85 only suffers from a very tiny bit of CA fringing wide open... not as much as my 24 or my 35 do. The 85 in general loses a bit of contrast from F2 downwards but it isn't enough to warrant it unusable... I usually shoot wide open with the 85 and very impressed with color contrast and general sharpness.

I've got a hunch (Mike P. also has one too) that Samyang has lost QC over their lens lineup in the past year. The 85mm I purchased a year and a half ago is absolutely flawless in regards to the soft and CA ridden 24mm and 35mm that I have bought in the past 3 months. It's just an assumption I have based on the growing and almost explosive popularity with them in the past few months... but it seems to ring true as more than just REDusers are experiencing this issue, with Cine and non-Cine versions of the lenses.

I wouldn't go far as to say as buying a Rokinon/Samyang is a crap shoot... but it would be best if you could stroll into a store and test your lenses before buying. They're still INCREDIBLE lenses for the money. If you can find a lens that's sharp and does not have alot of CA wide open, snag it and use the hell out of it.

After a month of waiting the 35mm and 24mm is ready to ship from B&H! Still on the waiting list with the 85mm but can't wait to shoot with them.
