  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I don't want to jump to conclusions but what I'm hearing Rodney say is that he doesn't want to bother with set up the way the monitoring path looks on the Red. Instead he seems to prefer the default settings of the Alexa better than whatever settings he had up on the Red One- which is fine but misleading. It doesn't seem quite right to choose (or dismiss) a camera based solely on the fact that the default settings on the monitoring path reveals a bit more detail (assuming the Red was on Full Range). when settings can be changed and set for the length of a show.

Look forward to seeing the final outcome, Rodney et al.

...is he clipping the whites or not? They show a bit clipped, but they may be there in post. Or not.

Back to basics. The RED ONE provides the RAW data sensor clip overlay function ..... that tells you that answer with certainty.

This was misleading to say the least. And frankly irresponsible. The variances in image quality could be attributable to many factors. Factors we didn't see and settings we could not confirm. He didn't show us the results of the shot footage, graded, either.

You can't test these cameras out of the box by simply plugging in the monitor cable, they are presumably RAW after all. Its a shame, since to many Producers and Directors who don't know any better, this little web video will be their only basis on which to make a decision of which camera to use. The Alexa has a better monitor image?

That's a decision that could impact their ability to recoup their investment on their project. Maybe Rodney could do us all a solid by taking us through his process, the camera settings like ISO, etc. and show us the finished shots? Not cool, man.

Stoke the boilers in your screening room, Jim. There's FUD needs burnin'

Yes, Jeff, it is things like this that creates a hell of a lot of misinformation and FUD. There are still a bunch of myths floating about the RED which are embraced as facts. Things like this just add to it.

RED monitoring is changing from build to build. RAW data remain the same.
Most professional DPs dont trust monitors on set. They rely on their own metering.

RED liveview HD-SDI output it btw maybe 1/4 debayer only.

Oh, and yes: why to bother with scientific controlled dynamic range tests?
Take this video and you'r done :-) It's from respected DP of 24. Who can know it better?
Sorry, but I'm very dissapointed.

Ok, so let me get this staight, the test is the video signal comparason? what does that mean? Secondly who cares? who is planning to shoot a scene without lighting it and not taking ratios into consideration? If indeed the test proves anything its the same argument as reversal and negative. I rather shoot reversal and do the work than negative and have the extra latitude and get to relax a little. Id rather shoot 4k and do the work than 1080p and relax a little bit. the dialogue is getting old already about who's who!!!!

Back to basics. The RED ONE provides the RAW data sensor clip overlay function ..... that tells you that answer with certainty.

Oh, I understand that. It's just another aspect of this test which is confused to me. Without any details of how each was actually monitored, it makes the whole thing carry even less weight as an actual "test".

Well, this is the issue. We don’t know how the crew set up the monitoring. And I don’t think Mr. Charters cares. All he sees on the screen is the Alexa has 3 stops greater dynamic range than the RED. That is a huge difference. Yes, he appreciates that there might be a stop or half to gain in post, but he’s skeptical. Furthermore, he likes to see what he’ll get on set. Of course, the monitoring method is not questioned here at all – simply that Alexa looks better than RED.

What RED has to do is to get some clear guidelines and literature across. We have seen time and time again DPs dismiss the RED One just because the DIT did a poor debayer and the colour grader wasn’t up to the task. These are misunderstandings, misinformation and myths that are hurting RED.

It's interesting there was bad news about alexa recently and then this pops up, comparing how the cameras monitor and now people are claiming it shows the difference in dynamic range. Now maybe it does but show me the "scientific" proof I need numbers (ISO,shutter...) and to see the raw data otherwise this is very misleading. Considering Rodney was testing an alexa a while ago in one of their first viral marketing videos I would think he has a slight bit of a bias if anything (as we all do).

have a good day.
