ROCKETCINE-X Bugs, Comments, Help...

Same results here. In the last build, I wasn't getting washed out transcodeds of QT media.

Yep, I see that, too, even with Snow Leopard. I applied a gamma correction on the rendered QT on FCP7 and then compare to the HDSDI out of ROCKETcine-X/RED Rocket™ look pretty much identical, so it seems 2.2 gamma look is rendered with 1.8 gamma.

Correction: My bad, the test result was from "Animation" codec. It seems Animation codec is initially set as 1.8 in FCP7. If I go to the property and change the gamma to 2.2 then it was pretty much fine.

Also, Prores4444 out from ROCEKTcine-X and place it on FCP7, the gamma looks fine.

So, Michael, are you working in Leopard or Snow Leopard? If you are working under Leopard then maybe RR/RCX is rendering out gamma 2.2 material but you are opening in QT at gamma 1.8?

We're looking into it here but we need to know what monitors you're using.
Technically the singal is tested as being to spec on various scopes and HDSDI signal analyzers.

First, the version is awesome - especially mxf! Nice work.

I do want to try recording right out of the SDI to HDCam, though, so I need the psf.

I've check it on panasonic 17" and the dreamcolor w/gefen converter, both of which work with both p and psf from every other source, and p from the rocket.

I have panasonic plasmas and a piece or two of sony glass if you want me to check those. I'll also see what it does into the HDcam dec.

So, I assume you are saying that psf is not working on RR right? I've checked with TVLogic XVM245W and P works but Psf does not.

After a bit of hunting, we've found a bug in the PsF output that trips things up. Working on a fix for that.

Gamma issue is still the same QT gamma chaos and still in snow leopard to extent. Apple is actively looking for a solution for us.

If anyone is using third party QT movie codec which is compatible with Snow Leopard, then I'd say they are made to work with gamma 2.2. On the other hand, if you work with TIFF or other still based file format then Apple Color or Final Cut Pro thinks they are gamma 1.8 (including "Animation codec"), so it gets displayed in gamma 1.8 which makes gamma 2.2 material look washed out. In FCP, you can select in the preference, or the clip to display with whatever the gamma you want.

I figured that it was a gamma thing once I looked at it, especially given that quicktime renders were the only ones looking 'washed out' and that my gamma is set to 2.2 on my system (not on snow leopard though).

appreciate the discussion, and I will try prores4444.

while I'm here, does anyone know if the frame 'tearing' I see on my computer display using the Rocket is due to refresh rates? i.e. video playback is at 23.98 but the display refreshes at 60fps, thus causing half frames to be seen, causing tearing artifacts? This is probably the most annoying thing of all the quirks because it makes it quite difficult to judge motion.

and for the record, I'm fine with it at this point after staring at it for so long, but if quicktime can avoid it, there must be a way for the red software to avoid it as well? I'm sure there is a technical answer for this, be it yes or no...

Hi !

We have switched off audio recording on camera. When I export DNxHD QTs via the Rocket and import that into the Avid I get two audio tracks. This makes a lot of troubles when you want to auto sync and so on, because in our projects at the moment we get 16 bit audio files from the audio recordist. how ever, Rocket should not export any audio track if it is switched off on camera. The funny thing is when i open the DNxHD QT file in quicktime player it shows me no audio track. When I import it into the Avid, it shows some....
Thats really strange....

If I encode the files with Redrushes everything is ok.....

We need here a urgent solution for this problem please....

thx

I will look into this today. This may be the case.
ProRes444 Material looks amazing. Grades very well in Color, and most importantly, Renders out of Color very quickly. As much as grading the raw in Color is great, the render times are hard to take right now. So I'm looking at using ProRes444 at 2k as my finishing standard.

Using Prores444 is exactly what I'm doing with Vacheron Constantine short film project.
Hans sent me the latest build on the Flight Director which works with the latest ROCKETcine-X and I walked away from RR rendering for 20 minutes, all of the materials the projects needs got rendered. Now only thing I have to do manually is comforming.

PsF not working here either, any kind of an ETA on this bug being fixed?

cheers

Why is the conform Manual?
Also, is Flight Director in the current Clipfinder 2.2 beta? Or is this something I can purchase yet? Sounds like the solution I'll be looking for!!!

I'm wrapping up the Vacheron Constantine film as I speak ( I only have an hour to go), but everyone is very happy with the film. Flight Director does not offer the reconforming to the rendered clips at this point. Especially when you edit multiple cuts from the same clips that requires Flight Director to add suffixes. Monkey Extract can do similar reconforming so I'm hoping Hans can come up with the support in the future.

It's a plugin for Clipfinder and will be offered to public.

Re-size error

Re-size error

I've tried to render out 1920x1080 from 2K 2:1 R3D's via Rocketcine, but the clips come out as 2048x1024. When I try the same output with 3K 2:1, things come out as expected. Please let me know if anyone had luck on this.

I have sent Deanan a series of log files, and I hope this will get resolved fairly soon. Tried the Redcine-X for the same purpose, but the clips come out stretched vertically, so this is not an option either.

Hope things get better soon.

Nook, and what version of OS is this?

Kaku,

Sorry for my late response, but I've got the 10.5.8.

Hey Nook,

I was able to run x8 speed most of the time with 3,1 Mac Pro, just in some occasions, it started up as x4 but if I restarted the computer it was fine. When you change the PCIe configuration (like adding or taking out a PCIe card), the PCIe misconfiguration might happen. On the other hand, RR's been working more than fine on Mac Pro 4,1. Never had problems and always running at x8 speed.

Kaku -

Thanks for your effort to help me on my issue. But my issue is not the PCI-e slot related. What I'm having trouble with is that I can't get 1920x1080 QT out of 2K R3D's. 4K and 3K come out correctly re-sized, but 2K R3D's always come out with its original size no matter what.

Again, thanks for your support though.
