ROCKETCINE-X Bugs, Comments, Help...

With the HDSDI output, I noticed that as soon as I switch the setting in the output, the desktop playback freezes, then won't play in motion until I restart the Rocketcine-x.

Hello,

LOVE the rocket, and RedCineX is impressive. I have a Mac pro sitting beside a BaseLight 1, and the Rocket plays back 4K on par with it. Impressive. Now the question is, should I send my card to Filmlight so that they can integrate it into the BaseLight using a Linux version of the SDK; or should I hang on to it and use the Mac as the DPX file making machine because I will somehow (Clipfinder, Crimson or Monkey) be able to input FCP XML files and magically a conformed stack of DPX files will appear on my Mac. I can then send those to the BaseLight. Advice? I guess the crux of the biscuit is whether or not a Linux version of the Rocket SDK is in the works sooner or much later in the product cycle. Either way, it's all good, nice work.

Linux SDK is absolutely in the works.
We're taking a tiered approach of getting OSX/Win first and then Linux as soon as the first to are looking good and we have time to focus more on linux.

We'd love to see rocket inside a Baselight (or 8 rockets in a Baselight 8 :)

Kaku, Press the rocket icon a second time, it's a toggle but does not light up.

I did the same thing!

When you turn on output to HDSDI, the card can no longer send the images to the desktop at the same time. We're looking at implementing proxy for the desktop while doing full playback to the monitor.

I'm assuming you're seeing playback on the monitor output in this case...

Okay this thing ROCKS, this changes everything.

However, I'm getting a lot of image corruption in my renders. Sometimes it's colorful blocks everywhere (mostly green), sometimes it just renders part way into a clip and then renders that frame the rest of the time as a still. I pretty much have to restart the whole computer to get back to clean renders, for a while.

One reproducible error: I've learned never to look at other clips while it's rendering. It likes to insert half size frames into the render or sometimes the wrong image entirely, probably the frame I was viewing. The obvious workaround is to not look at other clips while rendering. But, that means I can't really batch multiple clips, since selecting the next clip to render causes the currently rendering clip to get a bad frame. Rendering to 1080p ProRes 4444. Sorry if this has been mentioned already, in my excitement to talk about my Rocket, I didn't read the whole thread.

Looking forward to a more stable build, and/or a working SDK.

Speaking of a rocket-ready SDK, or at least a rocket speed QuickTime codec, I know you can't give out anything close to a date, but are we talking days, weeks, months or years? I'd like to know how to plan the workflow on some upcoming projects.

Sorry if asked before or Obvious, but does Redcine-x only work if you have a RED Rocket™? if so, I'm going to cry, then shout..

edit: Doh, its, Rocketcine, it isn't Redcine-X, ok, thats fair enough..

Hey Jeremy,

The reproducable error, where you work on clips while transcoding, has been addressed and I'm pretty sure will be corrected in the next version.

I'm not getting the corruption, what are you transcoding to?

I agree, it ROCKS!

Jim

Just a follow up on working with the current version, bugs and all.

I've been able to get clean batch results by shutting down my computer, leaving it off for at least 60 seconds.

I then startup, don't launch any other software except RocketCine-X and import my folder full of source .R3D. I've written a fairly simple looping QuickKeys "Script" to automate my settings exactly how I want them. Then a second script for exporting all the tweaked clips.

So far it's working great, and freakin' fast.

I ran into one challenge with my QuickKeys script... after scripting the adjustments, it is tricky making the clip list "active" so that a down arrow would go to the next item, it turns out if you program a click on the little grey box just to the left of the "Clip" column header (above the numbers), you can then program a down arrow to go to the next item.

Here's my script if it helps anyone else:

The scaling thing is fixed for the next version.
Please email me more info on the other issue you were seeing.

SDK is next week for sure.

IRE clipping

IRE clipping

Hey Deanan,

When I monitor the HD-SDI signal out to my waveform monitor, the signal hard clips at 100 IRE. Is this something that will change as things get refined?

Exporter unable to decode frame: 2, 3, 4, 5

Exporter unable to decode frame: 2, 3, 4, 5

We've been using our REDRockets for a while now to preview shots - but I've just gone to do my first transcode to Quicktime (ProRes HQ) and I'm getting the following error:
"Exporter unable to decode frame: 2, 3, 4, 5"
I'm running 10.5.6 with latest RR drivers, firmware, RocketCine-X, 2008 Octo-Macpro 3.2ghz 8gb RAM, connected to XSan 2 via Fibre Channel (320MB/s average speed).
Is there a setting I'm missing here? The source footage is 2K 2:1 100fps.

Also, I've installed the RedRocket in Slot 2 as recommended. I just checked the card status in System Info and it's saying that the REDRocket is only getting 4x lane speed. The lane speeds are fixed on this generation of MacPro (i.e. you can't use Expansion Slot Utility) so should it be moved? I've currently got my 4gb Quad Channel Fibre card in slot 3 (apparently getting 8x lane speed) and a Kona 3 in slot 4 (which we had to uninstall the drivers for as it doesn't seem to be playing nice with Unlimited RT of R3D native quicktimes in FCP 7).

Apologies for the verbose post - any help would be hugely appreciated.

Dan,,

I've been getting this issue a lot as well when going to quicktime, not on every file, but pretty frequently.

Deanan,

great job to you and all that made this possible! I have it my rocket up and running very smoothly on a new mac pro with a Kona3,ati card and a 3ware raid card. Fing fast! Drilled holes in my raid cards mounting bracket to get the hdsdi cables out. Thus not voiding the warranty on my mac pro.

I use FCP but have a few clients that want MXF files for their avid. I have been using Jamfuze by jamie to get them Avid MXF files because it makes there import time Real time. They tell me DNX imports are not fast enough?! Somthing like 1.5 to 1 ratios. I know, they are greedy. Oh well.

I would love to be able to give them MXF files with my rocket! Any chance this could happen? Also I can only do DNX files in 175 flavor. It would be cool to be able to at least give them DNX36 to offline with. More flavors of DNX comming? batching? Edl conforms?

Other than that I just started laughing to myself when I first got this up and running! So used to watching frames count down in clip finder and Red Rushes! No timed renders yet but it's real time or fatser!!! Also I love that I am able to scrub and see playback on my monitors in real time from the R3d's!

Thanks! Just wanted to share my joy and thoughts for the next vers. of the software.

Oh yea.... it seems to freak out sometimes and not show the next clip I am loading from the browser below. To get it back running normal I have been hiding the app or double clicking on the top of it to put it in my dock then bringing it back up. This seems to show me the next clip I am highlighting in my bin of clips below.

Yes, I realized after connecting the cable. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. Can you upgrade to 10.5.7 and the latest and try it again?

Hi Jason,

More control over the DNX codecs coming in the next build. Also, multiselct batching, some hooks for adding conform tools from third parties etc.

my card is showing as PCI 8X as well, any ideas what i can do to change that. It is in slot 2 on 3.2ghz 8 core.

That's correct. That card will show as an x8 when in a x8 or x16 slot. It'll show x4 or x1 if it's in a slower slot.
