  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Got the Rocket X yesterday. For the most part, Im pretty impressed.
Been running tests using a 500 frame piece of dragon footage, and transcoding out to my usually proxy/edit format 1080 prores quad4.
Here are some of the results on the 500 6k:
Export to Quad4 - 15 seconds (as opposed to 102seconds without the rocketx)
Export still w/ ADD w/ unsharp mask - 68 seconds (69s w/ out the rocket, so not a huge improvement there).
Export to 1080 OpenEXR - 61 seconds (103s w/out the rocket)
Export to 1080 OpenEXR w/ ADD w/ unsharpmask - some insane huge number
Export to 1080 DPX - 66 seconds (109 s w/out the rocketx)
Export to 1080 DPX w/ ADD W/ Unsharpmask - clock keeps ticking up past 10 hours
Export snapshot tiff - too fast to time.


However when it comes to exporting video with the ADD setting, yeah, can't really give you a number on that

Im on an older 2009 model macpro (4,1) w/ an nvidia quadro 4000 card.

I know that I'm at the bleeding edge of technology and I also acknowledge that I'm on an older computer that's also a mac, so I'm slowed down there. However, it would be nice to get ADD to work on video, at this point i feel like it would probably be faster just to do a Tiff Sequence
 
oh and by the way, w/stills (i cant confirm this for video because i cant get it to work) the addition of ADD makes a huuge difference visually, even on stuff that was well exposed.. ill post some stills in a bit

WHat "older computer" and which graphic card?
 
Bob, have you actually run ADD on a clip? it looks great on stills, but every time the machine just locks up and spits out some insane render time number (on time i saw one that said several years).

Yes of course I've tried it. And yes the render time is huge! Mine hasn't locked up but it does indeed work. A 3 second clip takes an hour to render on my machine.
 
How's the loudness of the RedRocket-X fan?

I have a friend who has it in an external Thunderbolt chassis. The fan is incredibly loud when the card is working (playback or transcoding).

Is that normal? I imagine it would be hard to edit R3Ds (using the Rocket-X for playback) because of the very high noise level (literally through the roof!).

What are other people's experiences?

Hi Medavoym,

The noise, is there, but so is my MBr, when it is cranking. The RRX does not help a lot in playback mode, in my configuration, at this time, for my needs-prolly a bump up. However, the transcode times are waaaay better than without the RRX. BTW, it sounded even pleasant after I put new firmware on the card last night and got 45fps, on a 6K, Redcode 4:1 quick clip to Prores422.
