  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rocket support for Color - please help us test

Big news for color! Doesn't happen too often... Resolve is quite the attention hog these days. Will mess when can.

Just did some rendering. Although it's about twice faster than before, it's not as good as the playback improvement. I can't say that I'm not happy about
this update though :yesnod:

Will we see better rendering performance by its release?

I know some people that will be over the moon about this new development. Thanks Gavin and team!

yay

yay

You're welcome, guys! Glad you're seeing some benefits. Keep the feedback coming on the render results.

As Rob mentioned, there are some limits to what we can do as a plug-in; we can only serve frames up as fast as Color asks for them (in the best case). Of course we'll do what we can to keep improving.

By the way, where is the "REDcode System Preferences pane" located at?

It's in the regular OS X System Preferences, at the bottom with any other third-party preferences you have installed.

Does whatever trick you guys are using to support the Rocket in Color get us any closer to Rocket-accellerated QT proxy playback? I remember one of the things preventing that was that QT only asks codecs to decode frames one at a time, and the Rocket needs to work with multiple frames for efficiency. It sounds like Color requests frames the same way, and you guys have found a way to deal with that. (Some sort of read-ahead, where if Color asks for a frame, the Rocket goes and decodes the next several frames and caches the results in a buffer for when Color asks for additional frames?)

Gavin my man! You save me $1000 to buy Resolve.

I guess there's no video output support?

My performance improvements was so, so. It worked pretty much the same for Full, Half, quoter.

It's working... There is a speed-up, but it seems to stutter more than without the Rocket enabled. I will give it a better run-through tomorrow when I can give it more focused attention. Monitor output via the Rocket would be the killer feature to have here.

I also have often wondered about Rocket support for the QT proxies, as Chris mentions above. Even given the limitations of the QT codec interface, I would think its possible. After all, the RED codec component could fetch ahead of the currently requested frame and feed the R3D data to the Rocket, then cache the output in anticipation of the next frame request from QT. Where I do see that being a problem is if you're trying to access multiple R3D streams for playback simultaneously. Although, once again, I think it's do-able. And another potential aspect to consider is that while QT itself is still ignorant of multiple CPUs, there's no reason an underlying codec plugin couldn't be multithreaded and scale across multiple CPU cores in addition to using the Rocket.

I think it's all do-able, but it's also stuff that takes a significant amount of time to develop. And I know that as far as Color is concerned, RED is at the mercy of Apple to add UI features to the RED room for which their plug-in can interface to.

Okay, here's my spec for my yesterday's test:

2008 2.8Ghz Mac Pro
12GB Ram
ATI 4870
4.5TB Internal software Raid-0
OSX 10.5
Color 1.5 with Redcode plug-in 3.4
Redline 326
RR with the current driver/firmware
Decklink Extreme 3D

The playback was increased substantially. Without the RR, I would get about
14fps in quarter res. With the RR, I was getting about 22fps in average in
full-res. One thing I disabled the video out for both situation.

The render time was increased a good bit. Without the RR, it would take
about 25mins for one-minute sequence exporting 1080 uncomp QT. With
the RR, I was taking about 7 mins for the same output setting.

All my test was with primary, a couple secondaries, and a simple EFX node
such as Natress noise reduction.

In a few hours, I will test it again on my main system, which entails:
2008 2.8Ghz Mac Pro
16GB Ram
ATI 4870
4.5TB internal software Raid-0 (Render Drive)
32TB Fiber Channel Raid-5 with ATTO controller (Media Vault)
RR with the current driver/firmware
AJA Kona-3 Card
Cinemage 42" LCD grade one monitor
OSX 10.5
Color 1.5 with the Redcode plug-in 3.4
Redline 326

I will let you know how it performs. After reading some posts, I wonder if
having video out to my Cinemage will affect the playout performance.

I hope Apple see this effort by Gavin @ Red and make proper support for RR,
so we can achieve similar performance we see in RCX.

As I mentioned before, this plug-in alone saved me about $5,000 since I was
very close to get a top-of-the-line 2010 Mac Pro with DaVinci for real-time
playback and faster render.

Can someone please do some tests as to performance gains with video-out (Color's, not RR) enabled? While theoretical 'optimal configuration' gains are still an amazing step, it's the real-world gains that interest me and, I would imagine, most people doing Color work.

I don't think it is possible to output from RR at this point.
So the playback is on the GPU.

I was testing with Peter and he got me the minidisplay port to HDMI connector, so I connected the Panasonic Plasma as the second monitor, then display the viewer fullscreen and it does play pretty well but little bit of stutters. But so much better than without it. Previously I was trying with clips sent from FPC, then maybe there was resizing involved and it wasn't working good, and Peter told me to paste the R3D directly to the Color timeline to match to the clip then it started showing good effect of RR.

I don't think accelerated picture would go to video outputs from 3rd party boards like MXO2 nor Blackmagic.

Hey Nook my friend,

Are you getting accelerated picture on Decklink or AJA? Or just the desktop.

Forgot to mention that RR helping to playback in Color, addition to what others and Nook reported on playback and rendering, it also helps to browse faster with say MC Transport with the jog through, too. That's nice.

that is a great improvement, thx for that...

will test tomorrow...

one question please: is the RedLogFilm LUT also available there ?

Gavin said they are on the way. Other parameters to be covered in the RED TAB has to incorporate with Apple updating the Color.

Wrong day to come with this, but...

I really hope the RED intergration with Color will come closer, still.

Something like RCX (with a more clipfinder'ish interface) pre-app, feeding color RGB in realtime, which can be flagged as LOG if that's what we want (so color treats the data the same way as it treats log dpx's).

I know.

THIS is not what this update is all about and this is all on Apple... I can still hope.

A bit further down on the list comes playout through rocket etc.

These are not complaints. Just loud thinking.

Pre-app will be the STORM soon but Color not taking the parameters from the FLUT science would be let down.

I feel the same way and more things get better with outside of Apple then more I realize Apple is lacking.

Hey Nook my friend,

When I was testing without the video out, it was accelerated on the desktop.
I will test the AJA video out very soon tonight. I will report what I find out.

Peter says with Color, video outs from video I/Os should work... Nook, wait a minute, what time over there now? It's 1am in Tokyo.

More findings.

I have a Panasonic Plasma connected to the mini display port, then on the system preference "Displays" does not provide 1920 x 1200 because it is a consumer TV with 1920 x 1080 resolution, so I either choose 1080i or 1080p, then it also has the choice 24Hz or 60Hz. While playing back 24p material, set it to 24Hz the I hardly get the stutter.

Also, while playing the 4k footage at half resolution at anything other than 8-bit will stutter at more pixels moving (like panning) but 8-bit setting in the internal pixel format plays really well (my GPU is ATI).
