  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Rocket support for Color - please help us test

Dan,

I bet the dropped frame issue will go away as soon as you
pull the RR out. For the time being, I might be doing the
plug in and out game, or not ;-)

Also, our staff Suguru pointed out while panning, high contrast area shows shifting in color while playback but not when it stopped.

Interesting. Our plug-in doesn't do anything differently when Color's playing, so I speculate that Color's doing something different internally.

Gavin -

For the FCP/AJA Kona-3 conflict, can you guys make some kind of a hard
switch to turn on and off the RR card? Now it looks like the Redcode setting
in the system preference only turns off the color support, but I'd need it
to turn it completely off when I run video out via Kona-3.

I just can't put the RR in for render to pull it out for playback. :emote_hanged:

Still, I'm excited about this update. I'm sure it will only get better as time
goes, so thank you!

running on a mac 4.1
preview via the HDMI output from multibridge pro to a pioneer 42" Kuro plasma
color is now close to realtime ( close to davinci ) in ajusting curves and so on
rendering seems to be a little faster ( 2x ) with 4k HD files
importing short cuts from final cut stresses the card a little - so no smooth playback but fine for prview

the so called loop error still exists - testing in real world and projects continues:)

changed my slot configuration:

Slot1 NVIDIA 4800
Slot2 RED ROCKET
Slot3 Decklink ( Multibridge Pro )
Slot4 NVIDIA GT120 ( less heat on the GT card )

Color's looping bug can be fixed using Clipfinder. Tools menu -> 'Fix color looping bug' -> point it to your color proj.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. More is always better when it comes to testing.

Yes, that panel is only for controlling Rocket usage in Color. As far as your question about actually deactivating the card at the hardware level, I'll leave that to someone familiar with the driver and what we can do with it.

Tony,

Interesting that BM works better than Kona, when it's significantly cheaper.
I was testing the miniDisplay port out of 4870 with Panasonic Consumer plasma, but our grading suite has 285 and the multibridge pro and Panasonic Pro Plasma with HDSDI but lacking any slot to install a RR. But I have 2 slot Magma works at x8 lane, so we'll install this and will provide further report later.

Sending timeline from FCP did made it sluggish for me, too. I think it is something to do with resizing. Maybe we have to set the FCP timeline as native as possible that the original clip is set for.

Thank you for the report.

Thanks for listening, Gavin!

I installed one RR in the grading system with Multibrdige Pro with the encouragement from Tony.

Mac Pro 4,1
Multibridge Pro
Areca 1220ML (as second RAID)
Magma 2 slot x8 lane
RED ROCKET x8 lane
SmallTree 10g Ethernet x8 lane
GTX280

With this configuration, without RR, 4K material on HD timeline plays 6fps (terrible!) but with RR it plays 12fps though the Multibridge pro.

With the multibridge Pro video off, it's playing 23fps.

Probably the first thing I noticed just playing back was it wasn't exactly realtime, so like everyone else the first instinct is to turn video out off (which of course fixed it).

I'm running it with an original Mac Pro (1,1) with the HBA kit for the Mobile Rocket (tops out at 4x). I love it, I hope this development continues (do not like redcine-x for grading).

I'm not sure, but I think installing this has completely screwed up REDCINE-X on my machine, as all ProRes Quicktime renders turn out purely black. This happens with REDCINE-X builds 261, 320, and 326, and before I installed this 30.2 plugin, both 261 and 320 had rendered perfectly.

Is there any way to remove it? I can't install 30.1 because it reports that a newer version is already installed!

EDIT: the problem is that REDCINE-X build 326 was adding an unexpected framing tool custom crop to my footage, and it has nothing to do with the FCS installer.

Hi Stephen. It's unlikely that this installation caused the problems, since the QuickTime codec hasn't changed and nothing else should affect RedCineX.

EDIT: OK, I see in another thread that this update didn't cause your problem. I'll leave the following info anyway.

About the installer and "newer versions": The old package and the new one are both supposed to be tagged to allow "downgrades", but the OS X installer is not honoring this. I'm working with Apple to troubleshoot this bug, so it'd be interesting to know the following from anyone who encounters it:

1. What version of the package did you have installed previously?
2. Does it allow you to continue anyway?
3. What version of the OS are you using?

Here's a list of everything we install, should you feel the need to remove it.

INSTALLED ITEMS

Color support:

/Library/Frameworks/REDCODE.Color.framework

FCP Log & Transfer support:

/Library/Application Support/ProApps/MIO/RAD/PlugIns/RED.RADPlug

REDCODE QuickTime codec and preference pane:

/Library/QuickTime/REDCODE.QT.component
/Library/PreferencePanes/REDcode.prefPane

Thanks Gavin, this is useful info to have available.

I installed 30.2 fresh on a computer that did not have any previous version of the FCS installer. I was unable to downgrade to 30.1 I'm running OS X 10.6.4

My Rocket shows up as installed in RedCode System Prefererences only sometimes; usually only when Color isn't running, sometimes when Color is running. Usually when Color is running it says "none installed". I'm not really seeing any difference in playback performance between selecting auto, don't use Rocket, or use specific Rocket.

Hi Paul,

Without video out selected like Multibrdige Pro or MXO2 (which means no video out selected), it should give you the playback like 24fps with RR on. Without RR, it should be like 6fps. You can select the message tag when you play back then give you the playing frame rate.

That's a known issue that any Rocket that is in use will not show up in that list. Nothing to worry about really.

Did you change your playback & grading proxy resolutions in Color? If not then it will be set to a low resolution which is realtime in software decode on a Mac Pro. See the first post on this thread for more information.

More findings

More findings

With the dropped frame issue I reported before, I was installing and removing
the RR as needed. However, I started to notice gamma shift in between Color
and FCP. More importantly, FCP somehow doesn't show any re-rendered QT's
correctly.

For example, when I want to change my grade on a clip sent from Color in FCP,
I'd just go to the Color project, re-grade the shot, and switch over to FCP.
Normally, the clip would be automatically updated with the newer rendered
clip, but it just wouldn't work that way anymore. Found it very odd, so I just
wanted to import the newer rendered clip manually into FCP. The newer QT
clip reflects the change in grade in QT player, but when I import it into FCP,
it somehow shows up as the older clip without any change in grading.

So I deleted the older QT clip in the Color render folder and tried to bring in
the newer graded clip while there's no other clips FCP could refer to. Ouch,
the newer clip would still show up with the older grade.

I decided to downgrade the Redcode plug in, and it seemed to be down-
graded although that didn't fix the problem. Now I see the removal
instruction from Gavin, I will try that. If that doesn't work, I will just have
some fun time re-intalling everything from scratch upgrading my OSX
finally to Snow Leopard (now running Leopard).

Anyone experiencing this weird issue?

LESSON LEARNED AGAIN: Never ever try any beta software on a paid project!

This is not a REDCODE issue. It is an FCP problem. FCP has a tendency to hang on to the look of older versions of files, even if the file has been overwritten or deleted. Some sort of cacheing I guess. Doesn't happen every time, so it's very annoying and unpredictable. If you quit and relaunch FCP it will pick up on the new version of the file.
