  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ridiculous monitor mounting

After owning a scarlet for a little while I finally picked up a Red sliding top handle. I've seen photos of people mounting the 5" red monitor on top of the handle. There's only one mounting hole, so it keeps swiveling around when I'm using the touch screen and/or adjusting the swivel on the monitor. It feels ridiculous - is this the same for those of you with a similar set up or am I doing it completely wrong?

I'm not trying to buy a rosette mount as convenient as that would be, so any help would be appreciated. Also, by undoing the loctite where the rosette is on the handle, is there only one 1/4" mount there as well?

There are threaded and unthreaded holes on the monitor.
Make sure you are NOT using the threaded holes and you should be able to tighten the bolts enought to keep it from swiveling.

I remember reading here that the swat rail bolt-on accessory doesn't fit on the touch screens, the tightening screw for the swat rail doesn't clear the plastic of the monitor base to make complete turns.

You can unsrcew the rosette adapter of the sliding top handle and use the two threaded holes underneath.

Oh, thanks for noting that.

FYI, some have had issues taking that TOP HANDLE apart.

Be very careful cause Ive managed to rip the shit out of mine trying :P

I agree that none of the options discussed here are very elegant or practical, and finding a solution that is both is difficult. I would love to see Red offering a single handle set that includes (2) outriggers and top handle that will mount together or seperately while accommodating proper top front center monitor mounting. I'm at a loss as to why such a thing is so hard to put together.

At least we know that dual outriggers are on the horizon. Now for the sister top handle...

Ive all but given up on the 5" on TOP HANDLE set-up.
My shooting style has changed considerably since I started last November.
I only place the TOP HANDLE when Im using THE CLUTCH.

I love the two OUTRIGGER set-up in the DRAGON topics.

I use one and the SIDE HANDLE mostly for quick run and gun.

I never liked having the 5" monitor on the top handle. (knew a guy who liked having the 9" up there) Did it once, felt a bit "awkward" and always kept thinking I'm going to bang the monitor with my hand whenever holding the top handle, and gave up on it.

Switched to the Wooden Camera EVF mount and haven't switched since. Versatile and durable.

Ahh okay. I was using the threaded hole. I didn't think about trying the unthreaded one as I didn't think that would hold correctly. Will try it out, I think that'll be the trick. The washer also sounds like a good idea.

Right now I don't want to mess with taking off the rosette from the handle, so when not on a shoulder rig, the monitor on top of the handle is currently the solution I'm working with.

For the other suggestions - thank you for your time, really, but I'm not trying to buy more accessories for what I think are insane prices. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the prices are justified. But as a part time freelancer who doesn't make my sole income doing this stuff like a lot of you do on this site - $300 is a lot to swallow for a handle + swat rail (albeit a handle that makes everything more convenient). I'm not complaining, it is what it is, but I'd like to try to get away with using what I have before I put more money down on things that I may not need.

Thanks for pointing this out. The top handle's knob can be pulled outward to adjust for this - I would think Red built this the same way for the bolt on piece? I guess I'll have to ask if I ever decide to drop more money on mounting solutions.

I know you've said you didn't want to spend; but this:

Is what we have on the rosette of the top handle and the monitor attaches via two bolts - really solid

If the monitor foot is on the lens side of the block (rather than the top etc.), have the fattest part of the block stick back towards the camera, otherwise the monitor foot blocks the wingnut from easily tightening :)

Thanks Alex. Actually I was looking at that piece prior to posting this thread. I would actually buy that but the problem is I also use a shoulder rig where I move the monitor to the shoulder rig so that it's in front of my face, and if I'm going to have to unscrew/disassemble any additional items from the monitor to get it onto the rig, I might as well just screw into the top of the handle and save some cash for something else. At the end of the day I will buy something if it fits into the overall plan; I just don't want to look back and find myself with $1000 worth of mounting accessories that are specific to Red that I won't be able to use on other setups.

No worries, hope you find something that fits what you need!

reporting back after several shoots - using an unthreaded hole to mount the monitor to the handle works great! however if I don't have an allen wrench with me it will occasionally get loose and start spinning around again. slightly annoying, but works much better than previously reported using the threaded hole on the monitor's base.
