  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RF Adapters for Komodo

Who's going to make a RF to EF speedbooster with vari-eND built in? Would that even be possible?

Depending on the coverage of the EF lens (needs to be slightly larger than 35mm Full Frame), it could work with some but not most lenses.

I have contacted Metabones and their statement was roughly that a cine version of the RF -> EF 0,71 Speed Booster is currently not a priority for them.

At KipperTie we have an RF to PL Revolva close to finalised. Same exact filter cartridges that Revolva uses, solid mounting foot to help support the PL mass.

I read somewhere that Canon might be working on more RF mounts, and think I read they were doing an RF - RF with ND's in the middle. Would this be physically possible? Seems like it probably would not be, but perhaps that some sort of benefit of the RF lenses, that can be slightly different distances from the sensor?

If that was the case it would be amazing to have an RF to RF KipperTie.

For sure a RF to EF kippertie would be useful as well!

Still one of the best upgrades I have made in the past few years is getting Kippertie mounts for my DSMC2 cameras. Thank you for creating them!

this is already a thing is was on the original image of the Komodo

There were some questions in the Komodo mega-thread regarding the metabones RF to EF speedbooster (https://metabones.com/products/details/MB_SPEF-EFR-BT1). It has a 0.71x crop factor, which seems perfect for the 1.42x crop factor Komodo sensor (when calculating from diagonals). If anyone has this adapter and could take a full frame photo with it on to show exactly where it vignettes, it would be most helpful.

While the new Canon RF glass looks fantastic, I also really love the idea of using EF glass and having that extra functionality the adapter provides. Being able to throw in an ND behind any lens, or add a speedbooster to gain a stop when the light is low is really appealing.

Metabones says their speedbooster has an image circle of 28.2mm. Komodo is 30.56mm in FF so may vignette slightly. Similarly in HD (29.07mm), WS (29.34mm), and 2:1 (30.22mm). In 5.5K you should be safe (27.97mm).

[Thanks to Phil's website for saving me from doing the calculations: http://phfx.com/tools/formatCompare/]

You are correct Robert.

The addition of the control ring is a nice extra!
But here's the question Jarred; will gimmicks like the control ring work with the Komodo?

John,

Will this be available in RF to EF ????

agreed - John, any update on this? do you still have plans for an EF version or just PL?

Would love to see an EF to RF Revolva! Canon offers an EF to RF adapter with filter tray for a vari-ND or circular Pola, but reviews are not great. Lots of complaints about their filter quality and built quality.

What is the maximum flange intrusion depth on the RF/PL Revolva? Wondering if some of my PL lenses with ridiculous rear elements will work. Like the Optimo DP series or some other more obscure ones I have... The Optimo DP units are actually the worst. If they fit, pretty much anything else will.

Had anyone had any luck with the RF nd adapter, I was pretty skeptical because of a lack of hard stops and a clear filter that isn’t included (which can be mitigated using some gaff tape :) )

I really like the adapter (even that it exists is pretty amazing). Works great and is awesome up until the last, strongest stop where the color shifts dramatically to blue. There are in fact hard stops at the beginning and ending and therefore no dreaded butterfly pattern - but, because the last stop is an unusable color shift, it does for all real case uses lack a hard stop at the strongest setting. Just got to be careful to stop before it gets there.

But, in my opinion, against E-Mount, Fuji X, L-Mount, etc, this adapter is definitely one of the stronger points of the RF Mount system.

Anyone know if RED will be including the RF/EF adapters with the Stormtroopers or the production models, like they did with the Orange Komodos? (I.E. should I return the Canon one I got in anticipation of getting a Komodo?)

I believe Jarred stated that they will not include it in the production model. I ordered my own adapter to be on the safe side. So I'd suggest keeping yours.
