  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Review: Excellent ProRes Option for Epic/Scarlet, Hyper Decklink Shuttle 2

This answers the fact that RED could make something as small and clip it onto the back of there cameras.. Wa Lah... Instand MINI prores module.

True... but will it be $325 and take non-proprietary SSDs? Also, who knows if it'd do the look-around "full-frame" scale down to 1080p (on Scarlet) and/or record the image pre-REDcode compression (to get clean ~1600ISO out of the MX)... OH and it probably won't come out any time soon as they haven't even mentioned it.

Certainly can't compare on price but I love my PIX240. It does have the Red file naming along with some other great feature. That said going straight to Prores represents about 25% of the jobs that I would other wise rent a different camera for.

so i can use this with my scarlet, shoot 5K hdrx 6fps to the side ssd and record clean 1080 30fps prores(or other) via hdmi or sdi (is there a difference in quality?) to the hyper deck 2? it will give me the same view? how do you judge the exposure? the histogram still shows the raw capture?

Am I doing something wrong? Just tried my Shuttle 2 and for some reason even though I have the camera set at 25fps, it is only recording 24fps in ProRes. Can anyone advise on this?

Thanks

Antonio
You have to set the Sdi to output 25p. It seems weird, but this happened on a shoot where we were recording in a 29.97 time base but the Sdi was 24, so the camera just dropped frames, out the Sdi. Make sure the output matches the frame rate. The HDL will record what ever you throw at it.

Yuppi!! It works! Once you change the monitor settings... Excellent! Thanks Timur, was being a bit of a n** here... :yesnod:

Im using the 256 gig samsung, but i only record prores. Not sure if it will hold uncompressed.

Have you had any issues with your Hyperdeck 2 when toggling between playback and record modes?

I'm also using the Samsung 840 Series SSD (256gb). I'm having problems with my HD2 losing connection with the SSD once toggling out of record mode (via stop button). Once I hit stop to try and toggle into Playback mode, I may or may not get an image output for playback; I may have to try the stop button a few times before getting playback. Conversely it's an issue to get back to record mode. I basically have to press the stop button repeatedly until the SSD is detected/mounted and hope that its in the mode I want.

I spoke with someone at BM Technical Support who suggested I try both Journaled and exfat formatting optioins to rule this out as an issue, which I did with no luck either way. He then said I should try using a different drive, especially a drive that is officially supported on the BMD Hyperdeck list. He agrees that it appears the HD2 is having a difficult time establishing the link with the SSD once toggled out of a particular mode. Since you have the same SSD, maybe you can help me rule out the drive as having compatibility issues. Maybe I have a faulty unit?

BTW, once I finally get in record or playback mode I can send HD-SDI record triggers all day and it works like a charm - very responsive. I can record manually from camera playback. I can playback footage without issues. Everything is perfect except for the problem listed above. I have to press the stop button 10 times or more. I can get by as-is if I need to but this product should be making my job simpler, not more complicated. Great product, this aside. Setup: EPIC hd-sdi feed, HDMI out of Hyperdeck 2; firmware 3.6

Any insight is appreciated.

I tried the hyperdeck for my F3, I remember it creating its own naming structure, are you able to give it the same clip names the RED is giving? if not, I must be missing something on the post end, how does this help you? just moving to RED so I am a little hazy on some of the details!

Question: once recorded, can the Hyperdeck with the SSD inserted be connected directly to a MacBook to download the data? I know a docking station is the correct way, but I'm curious because I'm getting the Hyperdeck some days before the docking station and I want to make some tests....

You need a docking station to transfer files. You can upgrade and set preferences in the shuttle via mini usb.

I just bought the shuttle today. I haven't even opened it yet, but damn.. the rep or the retail box should've warned me that I'm going to need an SSD dock.
