  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Review: Excellent ProRes Option for Epic/Scarlet, Hyper Decklink Shuttle 2

I was looking for a more mobile and less cumbersome means to connecting 2.5" SSDs to a laptop in the field. This ssd reader is 2.5" only, bus-powered, tiny/lightweight, and cheap. I just got it for $11 on amazon but it looks like its $14 now. Not the best for dumping footage but I'm mainly using it to format SSD's as the hyperdeck cant format SSD's onboard. Besides, you dont always have juice to power the standard 3.5/2.5 hard drive docks.

As a side note, anyone else using samsung 256gb SSDs? Still waiting confirmation from anyone that it works, no problem. See my post on page 5 for details. I think my hyperdeck may be faulty but lookin to rule out the SSD first. Thanks.

I was thinking of this Anker Uspeed. USB3 and eSATA (which essential for me as my laptop has no USB3), bus powered, tool-less. Some people have said it's a bit on the heavy side but looks like the right form factor for field DIT.
 
The best reader for SSD is the Seagate GoFlex adapter. It uses a standard SATA connector to attach the disks and it is ridiculously small and they have it in all flavors. Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire800.

I left SATA long ago (lol), strictly thunderbolt. I am using Samsung 500SSD 840 (pro) + Seegate Thunder adopter (bus powered) for dumping.

K, figured out samsung 840 series 256gb SSDs are not fully compatible with the hyperdeck 2. You can record to them fine but they have trouble mounting once you toggle between playback and record. Just a note for anyone reading Timur's blog. It seems he's using the 830 series Samsung 256gb ssd's, which may not have this issue.

FWIW I purchased a Kingston HyperX 256 and all is well.
 
I have an 840 Pro arriving soon, so I'll verify the Samsung.

Any experience w/ the Hyperdeck for you Avid editors especially since the .r3d structure naming hasn't been applied yet?

My thoughts that I need to test out if I want to go back to raw:

1) Record 4k Internally to Scarlet
2) Record 1080p DnxHD or Prores .mov to Hyperdeck at the same time
3) Use a renamer utility in order to match filenames between .R3d and proxy
4) Fast Import the shuttle files into Avid
5) Edit the really high quality "offline" files; get picture lock
6) export EDL/AAF
7) conform in RedCine or Resolve back to the .r3d files

Has anyone done this yet?
