  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Retaining TOD (TIME OF DAY) Timecode setting between shutdowns

Proud new owner of 2 Komodos.

One quirk I noticed is it seems that one must keep selecting the
"Jam Timecode to TOD" in the audio menu after each camera boot for the recorded clips to have
Time of Day timecode.

This is less than ideal to say the least.

Already had one shoot where I forgot to hit this Jam timecode function after a power cycle and had clips recorded with a generic absolute duration timecode similar to a run of the mill DSLR or Go Pro. Not particularly good for post when working with multiple cameras.

Pretty much every cinema camera I ever used defaults to TOD TC without any type of special activation per use.

Would be helpful if TOD defaults to being recorded into a clip's timecode without specifically activating it (or that the setting is retained whenever power cycling the camera).

RED- please enhance this in future firmware updates. It will make things just that much more enjoyable for one of the coolest cameras I've used in years.

Flagged this same wish with Red the other day and they said they'd be sure to add it to the requests list for engineering.

Hey, sorry to resurrect that thread, but I'm still seeing this issue on my Komodo, latest firmware (1.6.5).
Whenever I shut the camera down and restart it (even without removing the battery), the TOD timecode resets itself to 0, and you need to manually press the "Jam TC to TOD" function every time you restart the camera...
Is this supposed to be the normal behaviour ? And why wouldn't it be possible to do that automatically, as it was the case on DSMC2 ?

Thanks :)
Nils.

Hey Nils-- this has come up for discussion on two more recent threads, both on the occasion of firmware releases. I'd follow the advice on last page of the older thread and email Red to request it at <featurerequests@red.com>.

It’s been month we’ve been begging for that…
long story short, I just finished shooting a docu series for HBO, 6 months on location following athletes all day everyday…
Sometimes I had to swap batteries in a hurry… And sometimes I did not have the time to jump into the menu…
Results is the editors are right now struggling because of that…
And we have the same issue on the V-Raptor… A 20K pro camera…

Once upon a time I was an AE in post on various competition reality shows.
We hated dealing with DSLR and GoPro footage because they lacked TOD and had to get
synced with the 10-12 other broadcast cameras running throughout the day.
Definitely slowed things down.

These post production grievances get shared with production and can impact future use of gear.

Yes- timecode boxes do exist but for many smaller scale and/or budget shoots they can be overkill and keeping them connected make these already small cameras needlessly bulky.

Despite the otherwise exceptional size, performance, and feature set of Komodo and V-Raptor, RED is slipping
on a banana peel with this TC issue.

Totally agree with you Brian and yes, mine season, our edit crew reported this issue to our producers who are seriously questioning the use of "red cameras" in the show...
I had a tentacle all season with me, it's quite small and compact but it happened it ran out of battery sometimes or even worst, when booting my camera, even with the box connected I had to go through the menu to get the timecode recognized...
Anyway, when you're in the rush, swapping battery in your car then run on a beach to shoot a surfer with a broken foot, this is the kind of thing you don't want to deal with...
I have my Komodo for more than a year now, V-Raptor for 6 months... I can't believe there's no fix for that... On Raptor, I created a shortcut for this... But on Komodo it's impossible...
Add to that the fact there's an important backorder on tentacle, that does not help our case...

It is strange Red has not fixed this. If you can assign a custom button on the Raptor to trigger jamming the TC to TOD then it seems it should be a simple matter to do this as part of the boot procedure? But perhaps there's a reason and we are missing something.

As I mentioned above every R3D has a timestamp in the format HHMMSS (no frame or millisecond unfortunately). It would be pretty simple (though possibly inadvisable) to write a script that copies the timestamp into the timecode field in the R3D to get all the timecodes within 1s of the TOD. I just tested this with an R3D I edited in textedit and it seems to work fine.

Thanks guys for your answers, good to know it's not just my camera acting like that.

Hard to understand indeed why they still didn't correct this, since it was working fine on DSMC2, and as Robert mentioned, if you can Jam TC to TOD just by the push of a button, there is no reason Red couldn't do that automatically during the boot sequence every time the camera starts...
Even more surprising if Raptors behave the same... If there is a good reason for some people to have their TC reset at every start-up (I honestly can't think of any good reason, but who knows...), then at least give us the choice, a simple switch in the TC menu to choose between both behaviours...

I just Updated our Komodo to Firmware 1.6.5 the notes says - Fixed time/date reset on reboot.
It does remember the TOD but to display it you have to go into the Menu and reselect it. Menu > Audio/TC > Jam Timecode to TOD - select OK, to see it on the display.
Every time you reboot. This is the same on the Raptor, with the latest update. You don't have to reset the clock but you have to reset the Jam TC to TOD every time.

Whomever is doing the fixes, doesn't realize when you reboot on a shoot you want the TC Mode to stay where it was when you shut off.
Sort of makes me nostalgic for actual mechanical switches.

This all TC thing really plays on my nerve on some shoots… And some editors hate me…
