  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Resolve softening my images.

I started working with a high detail landscape of aspen trees, pro res 4444 out of RCX, brought that clip into R9 to enhance the yellow leaves. Then looked at both the original clip from RCX (16) and the processed clip from Resolve 9, fine details were less crisp. Again it's not like the clip was "out of focus" or usable. The difference is subtle and only noticeable when you A/B them in 4K and at a fairly close viewing distance at that.

I have not yet tested Resolve 10

Thanks for the compliment on my work

Very interesting, Mark ... any chance you could put the Aspen clip up on a FTP site for me to check out? ... would like to run it through the RR-X card to see if there's a difference and also test it with Resolve 10.

When are you going to release 'Sojourns'? ... looks stunning.

Neil

I tried using Resolve 10 and my sharpness (or lack there of) issue went away. one little annoying bug i found in R10 was that on output I could only select 24FPS, no other option was available to me, even though the project settings were 23.976. Anyone else having this trouble?

EDIT: I have give a shout out to Neil for taking the time to test my footage in resolve and help me work out the kinks.

Are you monitoring from the HD-SDI (directly or via HDLink) or the HDMI that provides the DecLink? The HD-SDI is 10 bit and the HDMI provides an 8 bit signal. The difference is, IMHO, about 10-20% softer if you use the HDMI output vs the HD-SDI.

I'm using the Ultra Studio 4K, connected to my MBP via thunderbolt, the US 4K connects to the 4K display via HDMI. Everything is apples to apples now. Files out of RCX look the same as Resolved files. But yes those files my no be as crisp via HDMI, but that's all most 4K panels have, don't have 6G SDI on my Sony TV. The whole set up, by the way, works pretty well, it's really nice to view final color FX on th 65", primary grading is done via RCX and viewed on my Flanders.

Before you drop any clips into your media pool, you need to go into config and change the conform rate to 23.976.

Thanks for that tip, I need to read the manuals more.
