  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So after hours of testing I found the cause for bad playback of Epic footage in Resolve on my system. Removing the Red Rocket from my system makes playback in Resolve 9 BETTER than with the Rocket installed.

Without Rocket the GPU bar is green, not stuttering, frame skipping, everything happy and smooth. Install the Rocket and playback stutters, GPU bar turns green/red, etc. Same debayer resolution, same project.

Anybody else experience with this?

MacPro 2009 8-core, GTX 285, GT120, the usual stuff...

What version of the operating system?

Probably because the rocket does full debayer, and isn't really up to that on 5k/ (and/or) HDR footy

No, you can choose your debayer level in Resolve and even at 1/8 resolution it still stutters.

I didn't use to be like that. I had it running with Resolve 8 smoothly at some point but I can't get it back somehow.

My understanding is that the Rocket ignores your software debayer setting and always does full. Gunleik's suggestion seems reasonable. Can you try some old footage that you know played well in the old version?

Yeah, the rocket does a full debayer, despite your other software settings. So it's doing a full debayer, and then that 5K full res is getting downconverted to 1/8th from there. So the CPU gets a full 5K frame that it has to crunch down to 1/8th.

Might be 10.8.2. Also try clicking the mute button in resolve. I had footage that wouldn't play back smoothly with the rocket and then I clicked mute and it works fine. It's a known issue as I saw several people post about it on another forum. Hope this helps.

Disabling audio helps, however, render times are awfully slow due to 10.8.2

I started the same discussion on Blackmagic's forum. Blackmagic insists that it is impossible to have smooth playback of 5k files with only one rocket but other people say they have it working perfectly at 1/2 res.

Would be really nice to get to the bottom of this, I just don't understand RedCine and Premiere can play back fine at 1/2 resolution while Resolve would need 2 rockets to even play back smoothly at lower debayer resolutions. Things like this really make working with Red footage much more difficult than other cameras. What's going to happen when we move to 6k with the new sensor? Do we need 3 rockets then?

Anybody got Resolve working with 5k footage with 1 rocket?

Nope. Not without some serious gear inside the box.
The explanation on how the debayer and scaling works, makes sense, as i have occationally turned therocket off to make things go smoother. Then you can have a lower rez but realtime gpu/cpu process...

Then on with it again for rendering...
