  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi guys,

Has anyone had problems rendering out 4k or quadHD from resolve? I'm working with a sequence imported from Premiere. It hangs every time on output of a ProRes4k and ProRes QuadHD. My colorist has two Quadro 4000s and a Red Rocket, so I don't think it's for lack of GPU strength.

Outputting 2K worked like a charm.

He's working on a 2010 Mac Pro 12 Core.

Thanks guys! Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

The issue we're having with ProRes 4k (out of Resolve) is that the render hangs up almost immediately. Same Res DPXs are no prob, rendering at 6-9 fps. Working from two raids that both have about 350/mbs throughput.

Tech support at BMD had no ideas. We're just gonna go DPX at this point, but what up? Can you guys successfully render 4k ProRes out of Resolve?

I know it's not optimal, but in a pinch, render DPX and then use AE or Premiere to render Prores. You may even try to transcode with Resolve, but as Peter already pointed out, 4000 don't have enough Ram to handle both processing and compression, hence with your hardware set up you may have no other solution, but to do it in two steps render.
And to answer your question, yes, 4k Prores works with GTX 570 with 3GB go Ram.

Jake, thanks very much. I think that's the workflow we're going to have to use.

My film BEST IF USED BY happened to get into the Shot On Red festival, so we'll be working through this for our output next week.

Mr. Christopher Barret is the colorist.

So... I'm guessing I would be well served by selling my 2 Quadros and getting a GTX 690? Would one outperform those two? I'm not sure if my Cyclone could power 2 690s. I've read that people do have these working on Resolve systems in Chassis.

Keep one 4000 for GUI and get another one for GPU. I'd recommend 570. it's just a plugin card instead of 4000. Two separate graphics cards will always outperform one, even one as powerful as 690.

Thanks, Jake! I actually have an ATI 5780 in the tower for the GUI, so the two Quadros are in a chassis and dedicated to Resolve. I have another question in regards to this output... is there any cheat sheet or check list for outputting DPX? During my last few tries, the DPX files are not numbered sequentially as they render. One big batch will be fine and then I'll get a set with very different sequence numbers and then they go all out of order when I import them into Premier. The only work around I've found is to sort them according to date created and then batch rename them. Argh.

I was wondering if I'm missing a setting?

Strange. DPX numbers are always sequential. Never seen DPX not being sequential. Just make sure, when rendering DPX never check the "unique name" setting or something like that or you'll get series of single frames, which is pretty ugly.
