Prompt B4 Reassigning Keyboard Shortcut

Prompt B4 Reassigning Keyboard Shortcut

When adding/changing a keyboard shortcut in Project settings... Keyboard Mapping, if you select a keyboard shortcut that is already assigned to another command, there is no prompt warning you that the shortcut you've chosen already belongs to another command. Resolve just reassigns the shortcut w/o warning.

I may just be an idiot but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do a very simple thing in resolve that I could do in premiere.

In premiere I could hover my mouse over a clip, and it would give me the length of the clip, and the in and out from the clip I took it from.

Is that in resolve?

I feel like an idiot but I can't find it hahaha.

If you highlight the clip and then select the circled "I" (info) button in the Color page timeline, it will bring up the information pallet with the ins and outs, file name, and so on. You can also click on the bottom of the clip and it will toggle between version, file type, and file name. I generally only use version, because that's what I need 90% of the time. When I do need to check what the clip is and where it's from, I usually do all that in the Edit page.

Yes, that makes sense and is done in quite a few other macro/key-command programs.

Awesome!!! Thanks so much Marc!

ABILITY TO REMOVE INDIVIDUAL FLAGS

ABILITY TO REMOVE INDIVIDUAL FLAGS

Ability to Remove Individual Flags

Resolve allows you to add up to seven flags to a clip. However if you want to remove a flag, you have to remove all flags by choosing Clear All and then re-add the flags you want to keep.

It would be beneficial to have to ability to remove a specified flag and leave the others unaffected.

REFERENCE WIPE IMPROVEMENTS

REFERENCE WIPE IMPROVEMENTS

Reference Wipe Improvements

Here are some improvements that I feel would increase the usability of a reference wipe images in Resolve.

1. Ability to have scopes toggle between the reference image and the current clip image. This could be performed by clicking on the image you want the scopes to evaluate and/or by a keyboard shortcut that toggles scopes between the two images.

2. Diagonal wipe. We have vertical and horizontal wipes, but I've found in other programs most useful wipe style to be diagonal.

3. Full image side-by-side wipe. This is also an extremely useful wipe style. It expands the viewer's width and displays the entire frame of both the current clip and the reference image side-by-side.

4. Ability to pan (move horizontally) and tilt (move vertically) the reference image. A lot of times the image of the current clip occludes the most important part of the reference image, or vice versa. For example, both the current clip and the reference image have a girl on the left whose face you are concentrating on. A vertical wipe is going to cover the girl's face on one side of the wipe, which is a PITA. And while switching to a horizontal wipe is probably an improvement, it will chop her head in half, so you're comparing her chin to her forehead, which is still not ideal.

my workaround for that is creating a kb shortcut preset with almost everything removed, leaving cut + paste only.. then re-mapping to my taste, the default mapping is pretty random and suboptimal, and i don't get any underlying logic what.so.ever, i kinda doubt there is any... more like a random afterthought.

lthings like "open Reviva"l on the top layer of kb shortcuts, but not bother to map high value items like "add grade" and "append node graph" off the table... just random/ weird choices, and burning it all down and getting what is high value where it can be accessed quickly is my answer..

should note that i amlost never use kb anyway, but use the shortcuts to mapp to macro recorders and external trigger devices like Color's softkeys, Transport's everything, XKeys and MidiTwister

Dermot, thanks. BTW, I'm going to be posting about renders, caching and optimized media. While there's some nice features there, they seem pretty weak and difficult/impossible to control once you begin to push the program. In Media Composer, it's very easy to render individual effects, set render ranges and delete individual renders (as well as background render). So if you have any insights on how this area can be improved in Resolve, PLEASE feel free to post away. ;)

i've mentioned the cache system in the past a fair bit, with a bit of seat time on both Nucoda and DS, they seem the gold standard of cacheing to me... but ya gotta walk before you can run, they are both so far ahead of Resolve on this file....

i see huge sys ram useage when selecting "delete unused" in Reslove, 70+ gig on a feature project with a few timelines, and the ram is not released untill you shut down Resolve... so there's some basic's under the hood seems to be in need some dev lurve long before addiing any features

I agree that there seem to be some pretty substantial under the hood issues that need priority attending to. I've posted in the bug thread how I can get Resolve to hang playing just one DNxHR stream with a fade to a JPG still. And I can get that to happen (albeit less frequently) if I remove the fade and the video track and just play two TIFFs one after the other. The computer keeps on churning for an inordinate amount of time. I have no idea what it's doing.

It's an awesome program. And Intensity hardware I've purchased doesn't seem to be fair compensation to BMD for Resolve being free. But I'd love it to become what I saw DS was.

and one request that's buggin me today, is OFX folders in the UI, i have around 500 plug-in's, most are un-unsed other than to conform a seq that used them in offline, and a few are very much used.. unfortunatly the one's i use commonly - mainly BCC's restore set are more recently installed so i have to wind through a few hundred Universe, Sapahire and misc OFX to get to set i need - BCC restore

if i close each folder one at a time, they will be opened again on re-opening the project

i would prefer to have OFX plug folders closed by default + a favorites folder

I get around this by just doing what I call a "flip/flop": an A/B comparison momentarily showing the full-screen reference image with command-W (keyboard) or Play Still (Tangent Elements).

I very, very rarely use any reference wipes except in color-critical situations like commercials where a box of detergent has to have the exact same luma/chroma values in every single shot. The rest of the time, I just know in my head what the shot should look like and I A/B it; the scopes are absolutely critical for this. I concede that different people work differently and some people heavily use split screen reference wipes.

Take a look at the Baselight reference wipes: they do some very slick stuff, including the ability to play back two different timelines at the same time on the same screen, which is something Resolve absolutely can't do. You can play back a reference movie and one timeline at the same time, but it gets very creaky very fast.

Davinci is one of my loved ones.
What is missing hardly is an auto color matching tool to match different shots to a imported picture or movie.
Speed Grade had an idea about it. But could be much more sophisticated.
All the best for the year 2017 you graders.

I would love a way to cycle though LUTs (hot key next/previous LUT) assigned to a node to quickly try out different looks. I find browsing into the sub-menu over and over extremely frustrating

Don't know if any of these features are present in the "Studio" or "Advanced Control Surface" versions of Resolve, I'm using the free version, but here are a couple;

1) The ability to see and manipulate points on a curve by using their X ,Y coordinates like in Avid Media Composer.

2) The ability to change "Hue Offset" values by entering different numerical values instead of sliders and offset wheels.

3) The ability to copy certain parts of a grade with others options than from copying it from the grades "Display Nodes Graph"

4) A more simpler to read list of corrections in the corrections list.

And more increments of change in the Blur/Sharp corrections control than in increments of 3

Hey Tony, have tried the Shot Match feature? It's explained starting on page 808 of the Reference Guide. There are a lot of limitations, but it might be helpful.

ColorTrace

ColorTrace

I tried to use ColorTrace on a feature and the results were damn near useless. It didn't copy over the Redcode Raw Settings and there were issues with the Preclip vs Clip transfers. Also, can't there be a setting to where you can just tell it to use the newest grades between two timelines? That would've saved me a whole lot of time (if the grading transfers had worked properly that is). Please make ColorTrace better with a lot less "gotchas!"

Mine has that feature: it's called a colorist.

It will copy over Raw settings provided you check off the save with version box. This is fairly crucial, but I agree, it's not stressed enough in the manual. I'm not happy with BMD's decision where if you make a Raw adjustment on a clip, if the same clip is used elsewhere in the timeline, that Raw setting will still show up. In other words, you can't have two different instances of the same clip with different Raw settings. There are workarounds, but it's not optimum. In truth, I only use the Raw controls as a starting point and nothing more, but be very, very wary of this.

Also, can't there be a setting to where you can just tell it to use the newest grades between two timelines? That would've saved me a whole lot of time (if the grading transfers had worked properly that is).
My advice would be to change your work habits so that the last used grade is the one that you intend to use for the final. When in doubt, make a copy of the timeline and add a date or a version number to it. I sometimes wind up with four or five versions of a timeline, just so that in case a director says, "you know, I'd rather see what we did last Tuesday," I can pull that up. There's a lot involved that boils down to your grading philosophy, and you can't expect the program to think for you. This is also true for editing, sound, and VFX. Multiple backups, multiple clip versions, and multiple timelines all have their place, and sometimes they can be crucial for in difficult situations. I have had cases where the client opted to use the second half of a timeline with today's grade, and the first half of a timeline with Monday's grade... and it's all doable and possible if you know how to use ColorTrace and you can cut and paste using Dynamic Project Switching.
