  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I wish to output some 4K 48FPS file in resolve to Avid MC, since MOV is the only movie option, I found there's no available CODEC choice for me except MPEG4, all other compress codec can not be executed (such as cineform), and I can not find PRORES, Why? Is it just because I am using windows? Or should I use uncompressed quicktime? BTW, now R3D seemed the fastest 4/5k 48FPS file on my NLE, all other format super slow, is that right? An suggestions?

If you're talking about making editorial media, you can export DNxHD as MXF from any Resolve version. You seem to be confusing 4K with Avid, though. Media Composer is not capable of working in any resolution higher than HD, regardless of the codec. While it can read R3D files via AMA, it cannot output anything larger than HD regardless of the source media. The only Avid product capable of working at larger than HD resolution is the Avid DS.

M Most,
It seemed you are right, actually the original problem I met is the timecode, 48FPS image sequence can not be put back in S3D editting correct automatically, which is 24FPS only. So I wished to use a mov with timecode. 4K looks halfly supported in MC6.5, it can import and export 4k image and MOV in some CODEC( I tested every codec, only a few works, others do not). 48FPS is also 'looks' halfly supported. But after I carefully checked the media files it created, I found they are actually stretched from HD 24FPS!

Now it seemed the best solution is edit in MC, grade in Resolv, and never goes back. DS is actully not available here in Beijing, because the seller can not do support for that. I bought Resolve from them, and their support guy refuse to give me any support because I mainly use it on windows. In fact they know no more than common graders about the software. I plan to buy MC because it is the only NLE that support S3D editting I knew.

Another day's try, AVID MC is AWESOME inside its own and disaster with other softwares on S3D. Everything is just mass after exporting AFF. 24FPS very diffcult to convert back to 48, and new AFF will combine 2 side which seemed not supported in other software yet, even MC itself will warn me that file is not compatible although it can use it with lots of warnings.

MISTIkA is so expensive here, 2 Million RMB........ back to Avid and resolve now:emote_hanged:

Take a look at Lightworks, it supports both 4K and S3D.

Looks great, anyway I already managed to use Avid MC together with Resolve now, they work good with some more control works on 48FPS 4K S3D with a potential 1 frame gap risk(very rare and very ignorable anyway). But just read the lightworks' WEB, seemed will give me much more effective workflow, and it's much cheaper than Avid MC. Avid MC only has a delux package here in Beijing, 4K$ (WEB downloaded version same price as U.S. with credit card but no local support).

Yes, Lightworks is really great. I used to edit on Avid, but switched as soon as Lightworks became available, and I can assure you, it does give you a much more effective workflow. There's no problem using Lightworks and Resolve, and I usually only use EDLs between the two.
I wouldn't recommend switching software in the middle of production, but do take a close look at Lightworks when you've got time, where support for 48fps is in the works too.

As a side note, for the same amount of money that will get you a version of Avid MC, I believe you can have a Lightworks subscription for 40+ years..

I paid 60$ and get the PRO version for win7 64bit new beta version, tried a few hours, now it's confusing to me that on stereo3d clips, I really can not find where to filp one eye. Another thing is the super bad performance on my computer, 5KFF only 1/8 resolution is playable for 2d, and 1/16 for S3D, CPU is almost free during playback, the GPU test showed that my system is fast enough, system transfer more than 200Fps, shader 13K FPS, Render 160FPS, but it never works that speed. LWKS.com is super slow from my internet connection...

You should be able to setup what eye to use by clicking on the Project 'name', top left, click on 'Video' tab, select 'Stereoscopic 3D'. Your drive(s) may be the bottleneck here, do you have a RAID setup?
I setuped it, my problem is, I can not flop the right eye. Right eye camera shot from the mirror, and must have a flop effects so I can see the S3D right. I can find the DVE flop effects, but I can not put it on right eye only, it always effects both eyes. My raid may be the fastest in the forum, more than 2GByte/S since it's a internal raid with 18*es.2. It seemed to me the lightworks for S3D is for editors only, materials must be well prepared. Each eye's clip in an S3D clip must be pre-trimmed to identical duration (durations always not same in real shot because the machine's response gap although they are well synced), and must have same name which means I need a assistant to rename all this files( after trimmed , one R3D will got three)...If can not flop, it also means I have to flop the right eye and make a new not R3D clip befor edit. About the speed, I think it may because the multi-Core support has some issue. Actually Avid MC also has this problem, I have to disable the Hyper-thread on my mainboard, or avid will always block itself and get only half speed. lightworks seemed can only use 1 CPU and 6Cores well on R3D, or it must have a RR like RedCINE-X.
60$ is not a big money, but it seemed not a good choice for me right now. Yet it looks quite promising with many powerful things inside. Maybe next year it will be a great choice for me.

I don't have access to any S3D footage so I can't test it, but if Lwks is using two video tracks (for the clip in the edit), then if you deselect the left eye track, apply the 'Flop' effect, it should only affect the right eye. EDIT: Another possibility could be to use the node based 'Video router' to disconnect the left eye track from the effect..

It always pays off to be well prepared ;)

I found the router immediately after I installed the software, it has two out for S3D clips, but you can never drag the other out, only one out line is usable, so I guess the S3D support was based on 2D's code, and made a bad initial code design work...
Also in the forum, I couldn't get any answer. So I guess it's just a problem tobe solved.

Well, Lightworks was used to make Martin Scorcese's "Hugo", so it should fully support S3D. I don't know if adding an effect to only one eye might break 3D experience..? I'll get in touch with the developers later today, so maybe I can get some information about this for you.

Thank you Robert! Hope you can get some information.I do have some suggestions on S3D, the identical duration requirement is too diffcult for common S3D work, it means you have to use prepared clips instead of the original clips(yes R3D can be trimed, but avid and MISTIKA and SpeedGrade and Resolve do not require that, the trim work will take quite some time and disk space). Also the S3D file name requirement means quite a lot more work, SpeedGrade knows every naming format and you can add your own, Avid and Resolve just do not care the name. This upgrade are not diffcult but will be very helpful. Another problem is Lightworks seemed only support 6 physical core, at least on my computer, all other 10 cores almost never used.

If you do not have S3D material, the simple way is clone a 2D clip, and name one as ***Right.MOV and another ad***Left.MOV, then you can get a S3D clip. You can do quite a lot of adjustment test with that.

Thanks for the S3D test tip :)

So here's the answer I got on adding a Flop effect to one eye only;

"It is not possible to Flop independent eyes on stereoscopic material.

I would recommend importing the eye as a single file, apply the Flop,
then export it back out, rename the file so it matches the naming
convention of the other eye, then import the two eyes together."

I hope it helps..
