Hi,
Last year I worked on Scarlet-X and did colorgrading on Resolve 10.
I've recently swiched my system to Epic-X and updated the software to Resolve 12.

I need Your advise beacause there are few problems I can't solve.

1. I can't set timeline resolution to 5120x2700 (in Master Project Settings). The highest option is 3840x2160 which is UHD. The Custom option doesn't allowing me set res. to 5k. Why?

2. What image scalling settings Do You recommend ? (resize, antialias, debayer...)

3. De-noise settings (Off to MAX) in Camera Raw tab in seems to have no function. Motion effects like Spatial and Temporar NR are disabled, don't know why....

What timeline settings should I use using Premiere Pro CC to Davinci Workflow ? Should I set the timeline in PP to 5k or set it to fullHD and scale the 5k files down?

I'll be very thankful for Your advices.

Konrad

3) That´s part of the paid license as well (the disabled functions)

If you´re on smaller machine and you plan to edit in premiere I´d recommend to set the timeline to native resolution and use the R3Ds unscaled otherwise it would slow your workflow down. You might render to a good codec at desired resolution and import to resolve. Editing R3Ds directly in resolve requires a more powerful setup.

Image Scaling = sharper generally works for me.

You do have to get the full version of daVinci Resolve Studio in order to get 4K, NR, motion effects, and so on. I generally color-correct everything in a 1080p timeline for monitoring purposes (and to work at real time as much as possible), then change it to 4K for the final render when necessary.

Thank You very much. The tip with switching 1080p timeline for editing and go to 4k for final render might be useful. Although the new Resolve has the optimized media functionality (havn't tried it yet)
I've always been thinking that having the original BM USB dongle will assure access to full version of Resolve.

Are You guys always de-noising Epic footage when shooting in mid-dark interiors ? I though that Epic would be less noisy in shadows than Scarlet, because it does have 14mln effective pixels instead of 8 (uses bigger MX sensor area than scarlet), but it seems to have similar amount of noise.

What I noticed is that having Decode Quality set to "Half res. good" brings more detail than "Full res. Premium" (but it's a little bit noisier ;( . Why ?

thanks

Don't use Half res for your master! It's softening fine details like noise and "post" sharpening your global picture. You don't work with the actual amount of infos you have in your file. With full debayer you are gaining "1/2 stop" of noise. Finishing in 4k will also make the difference when you have noise. 2k is making the noise look muddy. Some think this act like a denoise but you will only blur the picture details, and the noise will look ugly.

Konrad, the original USB Dongle should unlock all those features. Make sure you download the "Studio" version of resolve though :-)

Cheers, Ulf

@Pat : I don't actually use half res for my master. I was just wondering how good it looks comparing to full res premium. It should be in reverse. But im working on UHD timeline only, maybe that's why.
When I edited my Scarlet footage (or RED ONE MX - 2 yrs ago) full res premium looked best to me.

@Ulf , I might be using the normal version, will check the "Studio". BM had in previous versions only "Resolve Lite" and "normal",thx!

I believe the changed the names for this version so now it is Resolve Studio (paid version) and Resolve (free version).

As long as you check off "Force Sizing to highest quality" and "Force debayer resolution to highest quality" in the Deliver page, there shouldn't be any issues. This overrides any temporary settings you have for the timeline.

I generally will switch over to the output render settings anyway just in case there's a sizing/framing issue, but I try to be pretty careful about the renders I make for clients.

I would add that all this workflow stuff is much easier if you higher a pro to do it. There's about three dozen major traps that can kill you for delivery.

Yes, I'll keep the settings in the Delivery Page , and maybe leave half res for the timeline - this will give me much faster editing/preview speed.
I've just installed the Studio version. Eveything works fine, thx ;)
