Helium owner fully satisfied, but I would like to know your feedback about resolution Vs compression. If I shoot in 8k at 25fps I can reach 5:1 wich is great, but I can reach 2:1 only if I shoot in 4k, what is the best choice? Resolution or lower compression? I would like to shoot with lower compression but 4k is limited sometimes, even for the crop

In this case resolution gains more than that lower compression level considering all variables. I've shot extensive tests.

Most importantly however, make sure your REDCINE-X Pro and whatever 3rd party software is up to date. There was a new debayer released late 2021 that makes this even more of a leaning towards resolution gains.

DSMC2 and prior use a WCT compression, DSMC3 is using a DCT scheme. Rather than 2:1 through 22:1 RED is now offering 4 REDCODE variable compression strengths at HQ, MQ, LQ, and ELQ.

Thanks Phil, I will continue to shoot in 8k then, my helium reserve more surprises and it's difficult for me to Sell it, even because I have also a komodo wich I'm fully satisfied

8K will absolutely be better. One of the reason is the OLPF filter and debayering will cause a blurry image when view in 4k. This will be much better when downsampled from 8K.
And yes Helium is great!

Phil, are these new choices located somewhere in the menu on the latest firmware? I haven’t updated my firmware in a couple of years and this would be interesting to know where it’s located

The new debayer stuff Johnny is all in the SDK. So what you need to do is update your post software.

DSMC3 is V-Raptor and Komodo and DSCM2 doesn't have those codecs, method of encoding, or the hardware itself to do it. Raptor just got ELQ in beta. Komodo, sounds like Fall 2022.

Side note, glass makes a difference.

When using Epic-W , the cooke anamorphic, cooke mini S4 and Otus blew away everything

Makes a difference too what glass you have. Esp if shooting in smaller than full s35

One of our clients, an International nature content provider wanted us to test a bunch of lenses for night cinematography expedition in low light conditions. Here is a link to check how it came to be. Needless to say, our client was happy and we got the job done.

If you are finishing in 4k, but shooting in 8k on Helium, what compression do you think would still give you great quality? 13:1 - 16:1 still hold up?

You can go there, but I generally don't work beyond 12:1.
