can you output a frame sequence (DX, TARGA, PNG)?

what are you editing on?

Or use Red Rushes, I have yet to have a freeze frame when exporting to Quicktime using it. Red Rushes is a part of Red Alert

Or what Wayno suggested will work. DPX etc export out of Redcine will do just fine.

After that though you bad part is you have to render out ANOTHER pass out to QT via AE or similar.

Failure to write frames.

Failure to write frames.

I am getting error messages about failure to write frames. The resulting clip begins 1 frame after the failed frame, which in one example was 2/3 the way through the clip. No reason is given in the log for why the frame failed to write.

Same here Brandon,
immersed in a project and one of the clips just records the first frame of the clip into a 234mb QT .. in other words, I say render and RC renders one frame, the first frame, for as long as the original clip was. I had to erase the project and start from scratch and then it works until it fails again. So frustrating and not very consistent.
I did this on 2 different macs, a laptop and a tower.
Laptop specs: 2.4 GHZ, 2 GB ram, 512 video card nvidia 8600gm, 14 inch.
Tower: Quad core 3.2 ghz, 16gb ram, ATI Radeon 3870

doing a RC test on macbook:

- shot a short interview on 2k 2:1 build 15
- edited a small sequence of this interview in final cut pro 5.1.4 using the quicktime proxys generated by the camera
- exported an XML
- imported XML into CRIMSON
- cowboy intermediate
- downloaded a new version of RC, loaded the cowboy intermediate.
- the clips show up, but i can not see any picture - just grey thumbnails.
when i import the "telecine" -XML made by CRIMSON, they timeline of RC changes but still no picture - just grey thumbnailes.

any thoughts?

kind regards,
martin

Martin,

Macbook doesn't have Graphics card to show the picture in RC. You need to move the mouse on top of the screen and you will be loaded with a pop-up menu. In that click on color and you can watch the image. Hope it helps you. Try to use Macbookpro.

Oh, OK. Now I can see the images on my PC notebook (HP Compaq 2210b) after clicking Color in the top menu. But, the image is very dull and does not respond to changes in colour settings and curves. Also, the project thumbnails are still blank. Any way I can trick them to show up?

Pawel,

thank you for joining me ;-) I had exactly the same "Oh" on my face after reading G's post and trying in RC ...

same here, the image is dull and does not respond the color changes, etc. - there project thumbnails are still grey.

but after reading G's post i remembered reading on this forum long time ago that RC is a graphic card based application - makes sense now!

i did a test hand copying the settings from redalert to RC and rendered the timeline in RC - it works, i got a quicktime with the setting i chose in RA.

martin

When I use 'Load All' to get all of my clips into RedCine, it says, "37 clips found" (which is correct) but only 4 load (all from different .RDM folders). I have tried uninstalling RedCine and reinstalling but still doesn't work.

minor bugs (3.1.5)

minor bugs (3.1.5)

Couple minor bugs (clean install with deleted prefs, 3.1.5, Win XP SP2, Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz, nVidia 7950):

1. I get "Failed to save file..." when I try to save my project file:
C:\SERVER_VOL_1\_work_2008\2008_BRANCH\proj\redcine\branch_dailies_v4.rcn
...or anywhere on C, actually!
Redcine keeps wanting me to save here:
E:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents\My Videos\branch_dailies_v4.rcn

2. Redcine keeps forgetting the folder I save my color looks in - it keeps going back to a blank screen

3. the first time I load color looks it keeps wanting to go to a strange place:
E:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\REDCINE\Project\Session_1

4. when you run out of disk space (Saving a Quicktime, DNxHD175), it crashes hard:

Log file for this attached:
REDCINE.log
ErrorLog.bin (I added .log to the filename to bypass the upload trolls)
redcine_crash.jpg (screenshot of Windows crash, sorry, no debugger installed on this PC)
89cc_appcompat.txt.log (the Windows crash report, with .log added)

Is anyone else still getting the QT freeze frame on the first frame? I tried Redcine for the first time today and had the problem. There do not seem to have been many posts about it lately. I am running OSX 10.5.5 and QT 7.5.5 on a 3GHz quad mac pro. I tried trashing the project folder as described here and it output a pro res HQ file but that froze after about 150 frames. I tried experimenting with changing frame size to 960x540 (don't ask me why!) but it worked except of course I had a 1920 x 1080 image with the half size(or rather quarter size) image surrounded by black. After quitting redcine and opening again a couple of times ... it began to work and I was able to output a 1920x1080 pro res file. I have only just got my camera so I only had one shot to output as a test. Did this issue ever get solved properly?

v3.1.5 can't create QT files

v3.1.5 can't create QT files

PC System: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz
Display Device: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT

Redcine 3.1.5
Red build 16
Shot at 4k 2:1

I can create DPX files, but when I set the output format to Quicktime I just get errors writing almost every frame.

I have tried this with various different combinations of output settings:
1080p / 720p
H.264 / MPEG4

I have also tried it with the project settings as both 4k 2:1 and 1080p (then choosing Scale to height).

It fails in every combination.

The log is attached.

this may have been mentioned before but I could not find it... It seems Redcine 'remembers' the duration of a previously output file somewhere. I trashed just the Library/Redcine/Project/Sesion_1/Construct.reg file to wipe the slate clean... All my previous project settings were lost - I expected that. I loaded a new shot into Redcine. I did not set any in or out points, I changed settings in the colour panel and output to ProRes HQ. All worked perfectly. I removed the existing shot and and loaded a new, longer shot. The metadata, and the player showed the correct length for this shot. I made my colour adjustments and then output this shot.
It was fine for the exact same number of frames as the previous shot, then for the rest of the actual length of the shot it was a still frame of the last frame rendered. Any thoughts anyone?
I can output the files from Red Alert no problem... but...
I hope this points someone in the right direction to maybe resolve this issue as Red Alert does not seem to have the same degree of control as Redcine.

Does anybody for RED or Assimilate even read this?

I found the answer to my damn file saving bug.

On my borrowed Mac, you can just type the filename (without .rcn) when saving.

On my PC, you have to manually add .rcn to the filename. Or it just says "Failed to save Project..."

The funny thing is, when you successfully save (eg I type in "test.rcn" when saving), RedCine shows it as "test" in Project Settings. When I hit Save again, RedCine will try to save as "test" instead of "test.rcn" and fail again.

So each time I hit Save I have to manually re-type in the .rcn extension.

Which is unlike... well... any other program I know. When I was 10 I wrote programs in QuickBASIC and they would either add the file extension if the user forgot, or work fine without it.

So I think this counts as a bug.

BTW, if you guys want to fix it, here is a step-by-step breakdown of how I replicate the bug on my system:

1. Fresh install of RedCine
2. import 1 shot
3. try to save project "test.rcn" in "C:\SERVER_VOL_1\_work_2008\2008_BRANCH\proj\redcine_tests"
4. FAIL

EDIT: that's supposed to be redcine_tests BTW not redci ne_tests. But there's a bug in the RED bulletin board system which adds weird spaces. No I'm not joking.

I went through the log file and found the following line:

16:38:10.45 ERROR: IO Create File : 'The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.'

No Bruce. Post production posts get no attention.

Peter. Have you tried Redcine reset? I'm not saying it wll fix your problem, but it helps. You should be able to load a saved project after staritng Redcine with redcine reset and your frame issues should be minimized. I haven't had any problems lately. I'm on a 2.6g Macbook pro.

Redcine reset

Hi SF Geek, thanks for the suggestion. Do you mean to create a new project when you say reset? I could not find a reset command anywhere.... I just did a very quick test by creating a new project and it did clear the problem from my previous test. But I also lost all my settings of course, so it means one has to save all settings etc but I guess this is preferable to deleting the project folder...
I will have more time tomorrow to try some more tests and will post feedback if it's worth posting!

Thanks again

peter

Redcine reset is a little app that Anders, a fellow reduser created to start redcine with all the preference folders trashed. If you save your settings on a project you can load it in after starting redcine with redcine reset. That way you'll have a fresh start, but you won't have to redo all of your color correction, in&outs, things like that.

Just look up redcine reset on the forum and you should find a link.

Redcine reset

Redcine reset

Thanks for pointing me at Redcine reset. It seems to be a quick and simple solution to the freeze frame problem. I noticed that if I am super careful and do not try to do anything that causes an error in the output (like trying to output a file with the same name as an existing file!) Redcine seems to work fine - but of course it is so so easy to forget something and then the problems begin...

Anyway, for now this little app seems to do the trick for me.
Thanks! (and Thanks also to Anders)
